About Texas…

Some interesting facts about Obama’s rising status in Texas, via Kos diarist kubla000:

State Rep. Pete Gallego, chairman of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, has announced he is endorsing Barack Obama for president.

In the California primary on Super Tuesday, Latino voters broke 2 to 1 for Clinton. Gallego said he saw no reason why, as voters get to know Obama better, that ratio would not shrink in Texas.

“Obama’s life story and his values are so much closer to the Latino community than any candidate other than Bill Richardson,” Gallego said.

“Part of what drives me is his life story. It’s a fascinating life story. It’s more than just the issues, it’s his values. I think Hispanics and South Texas should really be able to relate to him.”

I personally have had a really hard time understanding why Clinton has so far gotten most of the latino vote. Her and Obama have similar positions on immigration, yet he has the more closely relatable personal history.

That’s EXACTLY what Gallego’s saying. Clinton has gotten far for one reason: her husband was the last Democratic president we had, and a charismatic one at that.My friends in LA all told me that if Obama had had another week, he would’ve done better in CA – maybe even won it. The polling reflects that.He has a month before TX, and he’s already all over it. I predict the big story in the coming weeks will be: “Hillary is losing her Latino edge.”And then we can add Latinos to the growing list of subgroups the media loves to point out support Obama: young people, African Americans, white men, college graduates, business people, progressives, independents, moderate Republicans…
