The Real Question About McCain

Why does Senator McCain have a thing for women without eye pupils?

Hair: blonde. Eye color: white?

Here’s my serious take: this scandal conveniently rallies the far-right conservative wing to Senator McCain’s defense and the last puzzle piece falls into place for the Republicans in the general election.

I think it’s an “almost crime” (hence the Broken Social Scene song appearing as today’s Morning Awesome). It plays to the hypocrisy of the Republicans which we were already aware of. But unlike the scandals of the Bush administration, it doesn’t really have a hardcore crime attached to it. That we know of.

So it helps the GOP secure the wayward dittoheads. Plus it will be seen as a draw among wingnuts in the Middle West who will likely weigh in like so: “maybe he had an affair with a lobbyist, but it’s the liberal New York Times saying it, so… vote for the Republican candidate anyway.”

I can’t believe I’m saying this but… this helps John McCain.

It helps him if the concentration is on an implied-denied romantic relationship, ’cause frankly, who cares? (except the right wingers who can’t seem to cope with heterosexual out-of-wedlock relationships). It could hurt him, with independents at least, if the concentration shifts to the appearance of impropriety with a lobbyist. If it can be shown that he backed or encouraged legislation which had financial benefits for Iseman’s clients or if it can be successfully, logically implied that they received favorable treatment at his behest, then it could be a tipping point against him with people who might have been persuaded to vote for him, in spite of the hugging Bush pictures.

I agree that this really wont do much damage. It will keep him off message for a while, but that’s it. The Obama campaign will ignore this because they don’t really work the sleaze angle. The Clinton campaign can’t even think about going after this. Even the attack dog surrogates will ignore it. The story hits too close to home and they don’t want to open that door.If Iseman or her clients benefited from the relationship (in whatever form the relationship was), that’ll be something the Sunday talking heads can go after. They love a financial scandal with a adulterous angle. Once the financial aspect is out in the open, then the campaigns can start talking about it while ignoring the alleged adultery.

No one seems to have asked the lovely Ms. Iseman what happened. Drop her a line, maybe.v.iseman@alcade-fay.comI think it fires up the base a bit, but a close relationship, whether adulterous or not, with a lobbyist doesn’t help him. Tarnishes his “maverick” image; I think anything that puts a candidate on the defensive is damaging. It’s just that the GOP has learned to play defense by going on the offensive–here, by attacking the NYT. It’s so much fun that even Limbagh joins in, in spite of his hatred for McCain.

It seems to me that people have lost sight of two things.First, Cindy’s defense of her husband. Of course he’s a white Republican Cheat…that’s how she GOT him. He cheated with her on his ex-wife. She is simply #2 – all this garbage about “standing by her man” is because she knows he has done this before so there very well may be fire where the smoke is coming from. Also, he tends towards younger women. Cindy is an heiress and he married her to finance his campaigns. Simple…and well known here in AZ.Second. This is not about an affair. It is about Mr. Stray T Cock allowing unimpeded access to a lobbyist while constantly preaching that he does not bed lobbyists. THAT (in my opinion) is what is going on here and where the story lies. It sounds like little Blondie #2 was going around bragging McVain was doing favors for her. The fact that she would and could do that, says volumes about what this story is about. It is an indictment of just one more (we here in AZ have lost track of the sheer numbers!) lie and flip flop and stupid excuse by our Senator who has stopped representing us and missed the last 18 votes in the Senate AND voted in favor of torture.Anything, lies … allegations … affairs … corruption (The Keating 5) that brings this man to his knees is fine in my book.
