“As Far As I Know”

I’m presently writing the chapter titled “Glenn Beck Has An Unfortunate Name” (preorder the book here) about these dangerous and sinister rumors about the senator, so you can imagine that I pretty much flew into a rage upon watching 60 Minutes last night. In case you missed it, Senator Clinton basically said that there could be some truth to the rumors:

“You don’t believe that Senator Obama’s a Muslim?” Kroft asked Sen. Clinton.

“Of course not. I mean, that, you know, there is no basis for that. I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn’t any reason to doubt that,” she replied.

“You said you’d take Senator Obama at his word that he’s not…a Muslim. You don’t believe that he’s…,” Kroft said.

“No. No, there is nothing to base that on. As far as I know,” she said.

And then there’s this video:

It’s a shameful day in America.

Why isn’t anyone asking the question “Just what the hell would be wrong with a muslim President?” I mean, I know why she’s not. She’s still trying to make nice with the Right WingNuts, but everytime this comes up, it’s answered with “Oh no, don’t worry. He’s not. He’s a Christian. Everybody settle down! He’s the right religeon!” It’s obvious that the idea of him being muslim is being used to appeal to the really scared and uneducated, but why not drive those assholes into the shadows with the point blank question “Why can’t a muslim be President?” Make them own it. Make the Republicans own their bigotry.”He’s not a secret muslim. It wouldn’t matter if he was muslim. Now get the fuck back under your rock and stay there.”

Well put, Nanotyrannus. She said “Of course not!” and then proceeded to hem-and-haw. I had a similar conversation with someone at work. They liked Obama, but were worried because “he can’t decide what his religion is”. That’s a direct quote. I told them that was a blatant lie they were repeating, and showed several articles where that had been refuted. Unfortunately, I don’t think it has much effect, just like the guy in this video. The stunned reaction and the *blink* *blink*…People refuse to believe they’ve been duped.

Well, it’s logical they would love this tactic – it accomplishes two goals with one act. First, it plays to people’s fears that we might, just might, elect (gasp!) a muslim to the presidency. Second, it re-emphasizes the danger of doing so, because, as we all know, if a muslim were to be elected president, our women would all be wearing the burkah sometime around next week.

And another thing! The reason I broke with HRC a while back was because of her “leaving it for others to decide” if homosexuality is immoral (thank you, Peter Pace). There is always this “gotta run right down the middle so I don’t give the Righties anything to use against me and so they see I’m not so bad after all! Haha!” coming from her. The same thing happened last night. She sort of, nobody’s sure, perhaps maybe said Barack Obama is not a muslim. She could have given an answer that would have shut down that bullshit line of questioning but instead chose to “leave it for others to decide.”

Bah, I wish he was a Muslim and was elected president. Then all Americans can see that a president’s religion is his/her own damn business and think of something equally retarded to be afraid of.

Excellent question (1st post) Nano, and your refrain of “leave it for others to decide” (or clean up, maybe?) sounds strangely reminiscent of the current POTUS.Bob, skip the rage – just keeping writing and exposing the lies and bs. We depend on you. :)

I don’t know…I saw the tape & HRC started off saying “no, he’s not Muslim”, etc. Russert kept pressing her, which is when she got kinda wishy-washy, so my question (aside from Nano’s obvious one of what difference should it make?) is when did it become HRC’s responsibility to answer questions or dispel net-myths about Obama?? What she should have said is “no, he’s not. He’s said he’s not. I won’t discuss it and any further questions you have about it you need to direct to Senator Obama”. period. It’s all such nonsense. We have big – huge – issues facing us and people are losing sight of the goal which is to get us, U.S., the hell out of Iraq, get the Republicans the hell out of the White House, and restore the Constitution. If the Democrats lose this election over piddly shit like if a candidate prays to Jesus or to Allah or to the great spaghetti-monster in the sky we are never going to be the country we could and should be.Okay, I feel better now. Thanks!

  • ceu

okay…I was a bit wound up and said Russert was pressing HRC but in truth I can’t remember who was doing the pressing. Sorry about that.

  • Nanotyrannus

CEU! Love you MUCHO!It was Steve Croft, I think. You got it — she should have just shut him down with a “Hey he’s not Muslim, it shouldn’t matter and wasn’t this whole distraction resolved over a year ago? Come on! Next question!” OR “Oh hey it was great to be able to spend a few precious moments with you, but if that’s all you got, I got things to do. Running for President, doncha know!” That kind of decisiveness might have won her some support. Instead, she decided to keep the pot stirred.

My fat ass, gossiping, gay-bashing, HRC/Obama/Celine Dion “because she chooses to live in Canada because she hates America” (I informed her that Celine Dion IS Canadian)-lampooning co-worker just blasted this song (link below) at her desk, and as I’m stuck in a Joe VS. The Volcano room w/her & my 3 other braindead Rep co-workers all day, listening to blatant liberal bashing because it’s the general mindset of our entire backwoods Bush-licking company, I needed to escape by coming here…and reading The Goddamn Awesome Blog & all of your intelligent, well-informed and enlightened comments…and wishing to God I could escape Florida. Thanks! Your checks are in the mail! Here’s what is currently “the funniest thing in the world” on local morning radio shows here. But I gather “MJ” from the MJ Morning Show stole it from elsewhere.(If YouTube link doesn’t work, it’s the “The Obama Man Can” song).Help me. Somebody?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM8Z9XBGHxQ

Poor you, KikiD. I feel for ya, I honestly do. Luckily, one of my jobs is at a Community Foundation and (I’ve found that) workers at non-profits tend to be more liberal, we get to bash Bush! It’s heavenly! They loved the AT&T billboard, BTW, Bob – so thanks for that!
