Alea Iacta Est

WASHINGTON – Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold will not filibuster a compromise version of an electronic surveillance program although he thinks it will infringe on U.S. citizens’ civil liberties.

Feingold said he and other Senate opponents won’t try to stop the vote, but they “won’t allow it to pass quickly.”

This resonates much more than Senator Obama’s remarks from Friday. And it leads me to believe that there’s much more to this bill than meets the eye.

I agree, there HAS to be something else going on with this bill, some kind of back room wrangling. On another note, maybe it allows spying on Bush after he’s gone.

This is what happens to us after 7+ years of deception. We start to believe our good guys are just as bad as their worst guys. I think we are going to find out some interesting tidbits about this bill when it all shakes out. Many have been slamming Obama hard over this, now even Feingold is onboard. Maybe, just maybe these guys know exactly what they are doing. Lets watch and see what happens. I am now recharged on this issue.

This was from today? Because I just read here http://www.democracynow.org/2008/6/24/feingold that he plans to filibuster it.

He’s not using the word filibuster, which to me means that he dodd and others will pontificate, but they can’t stop it.Which is crap, because they can—one single Republican is all it’s taken to derail several bills over the last year, but nobody on our side will do it.Or more accurately, nobody on our side has the tacit approval of Reid to get away with it.

Dodd, Feingold Statement on Senate Consideration of FISAWill Immediately Offer Amendment to Strip Retroactive ImmunityJune 24, 2008Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) released the following statement today in response to the announcement that the Senate this week will consider the compromise legislation that would reform the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) this week.“This is a deeply flawed bill, which does nothing more than offer retroactive immunity by another name. We strongly urge our colleagues to reject this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation and oppose any efforts to consider this bill in its current form. We will oppose efforts to end debate on this bill as long as it provides retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that may have participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program, and as long as it fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans.“If the Senate does proceed to this legislation, our immediate response will be to offer an amendment that strips the retroactive immunity provision out of the bill. We hope our colleagues will join us in supporting Americans’ civil liberties by opposing retroactive immunity and rejecting this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation.”http://dodd.senate.gov/index.php?q=node/4473We will oppose efforts to end debate on this bill=filibuster

Hmmm… so they’re going to filibuster without using the word “filibuster”… maybe it’s bad luck to use the word “filibuster” on the Senate floor. Sort of like using the word “Macbeth” in a theatre.

Dodd and Feingold are going to “Scottish play” the FISA bill!
