And The Field Narrows – Part 2

More discussion on this story from the Wall Street Journal (via BooMan):

Obama: “His focus now includes five colleagues in the U.S. Senate — Joseph Biden, Evan Bayh, Chris Dodd, Hillary Clinton and Jack Reed — and two governors, Tim Kaine of Virginia and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, according to Democratic operatives, though he could still make a different pick.”

It can’t be a senator. I’ve blogged about why, so I won’t repeat the whole rap, but suffice to say, the Senate Dems need to remain in the Senate. And, of course, Senators Bayh and Clinton would pretty much destroy the party base as well as obliterating Senator Obama’s change theme.

Therefore, if it’s any name from this list, it’ll be either Governor Kaine or Sebelius. And if I had to choose, I’d go with Governor Sebelius.

Agreed. Sebelius would be something the Clinton hangers-on could get excited about. A female vice president. Yup, I can see that.

I’m hoping for a non DLC pick, and I think Dodd is the only one. Fucking centrists, man.

  • MG

Sebelius is pretty hot for an old woman.”SEXIST!”Not really… it’s just the extent to which I care about this election.Man… I REALLLLLLY wish I bought a 3 day pass to that San Diego comic con instead of the 1 day shot for yesterday.

Hey Bob..i disagree on one Senator you mentioned above…and that is Jack Reed from my perpetually Blue State of Rhode Island. He has the military background and is well regarded by most. It would be a safe bet that another Dem would win that seat here in RI.

  • ceu

cminri – is RI’s gov. Dem or GOP? And does the state vote on a replacement senator (do they all?) or does the gov. appoint?

  • ceu

Travis – problem is that CT’s gov is Republican (she acts like a Democrat, but she’s not) so she’d (most likely) appoint a Democrat to fill Dodd’s term if Dodd became VP.

  • cminri

ceu..You have a good point there. We do have a Republican Governor (the lone Republican in just about any state or federal office in RI). I am not sure what would happen if Jack Reed were chosen. I’ll have to do a little research and find that out. Just on a side note, Lincoln Chafee, our last Republican Senator (who lost to a Dem last election) was the only Republican to vote against the war in Iraq from the beginning. He has since left the Republican party and is now an Independent. Maybe he should be considered…..

  • http://www.unrelatedcontent.com Travis Disaster

We just can’t win, can we :-/

  • ceu

My comment was incorrect. I meant to say that Rell would appoint a Republican, but typed Democrat. Wishful thinking on my part, I guess. At least Travis understood what I meant. :)

  • natashacrk

KAINE! He rocks! Virginia is a MAJOR swing state and will turn BLUE in November–because I’m working hard to make it blue!

  • cminri

ceu..i understood what you meant too!!!

  • ceu

Whew – thank heavens for mind-readers, eh?re: your comment about Linc Chaffee. I like him, but IMO, he’s not liberal enough. I don’t see what he’d add to an Obama ticket.

  • fem4peas

what ever happened to bill richardson? dem from the west? latino vote? early clinton supporter, although condemned as a judas. that shit doesn’t stick does it? this guy seemed to have it all. did i miss something?

I agree, Fem- Richardson is still tops in my book. He’s a gaffe machine, but I think his pros outweigh his cons considerably. Plus he’d help keep the entire Southwest (minus Utah) in play, from Texas to Arizona.–d

  • bajasteve

Dan – The Deseret Republic isn’t really part of the southwest anyway, so not a big deal.BTW, the former mayor of Salt Lake City was one of the witnesses before the House Judiciary Committee, and was adamant about the criminal behavior of the Bush (mis)administration.

And MG: your statement about how little you care about this election says volumes about your political awareness. Of course, all the volumes contain two words only: fucking clueless.

  • ceu

Agreed, Baja. Anderson was impressive plus he’s got a great speaking voice. Not much coverage of the Judiciary Committee hearings by the corporate media – why am I not surprised? I didn’t see them contemporaneously, but GottaLaff over at The Political Carnival liveblogged them and captured the gist of them. Saw them repeated Friday night, but missed a lot. The majority of witnesses said that this admin needs to be impeached now, with a few incoherent fools stuttering about how they couldn’t find anything criminal in what BushCo has done. Vincent Bugliosi was great, too, with his “How dare they!”I haven’t found much discussion of the hearings on the blogs, either.

I know that corporations own your pathetic ass and every politician who you believe is respondent to your pathetic ass.Neither Obama nor McCain will reverse the erosion of your “freedoms” and withdraw troops from Iraq. Sorry, bud. You can have a delusion of grandeur about your importance and damn me. It won’t change the facts.”This country was bought and paid for a long time ago… These rich cock suckers who you elect into office every few years don’t care about you.”-George Carlin.

  • bajasteve

I have absolutely no delusions about myself or anyone else. I only know that apathy is not a solution to anything. Oh, and also, I recognize concern trolls when I see them.

  • bajasteve

George Carlin was a truly great comedian and social commentator. However, before I let a comedian and social commentator tell me what to believe and how to feel, I’d rather shoot myself. Are you so pathetic yourself that you’d let a dead comedian make your decisions for you?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

MG – unless you’re living off the grid, they own your ass too. If you want to delude youreself into thinking that not being involved makes you smarter, then live in ignorant bliss with your comic conventions.

Are you so pathetic yourself that you’d let a dead comedian make your decisions for you?Posted by: bajasteve at July 27, 2008 05:05 PMWhat am I– a Wes Clark bot from ’04?No, no one “makes decisions for me.” He expressed how I felt. He didn’t claim such things then I followed him blindly.Lewis Black is another guy who expresses my feelings well. Both of them are/were left-leaning, but they realized the irrelevance of the whole thing. When someone such as Thom Hartmann claims obsessively that a single person from the ’80s has wrecked the system I must laugh. The U.S. was on an irreversible upward trajectory since the end of World War II. A single man did not make or break it, though I recognize Roosevelt’s admirable concessions to socialists during its nascent period. Now, however, I believe that we have stagnated, and are quite possibly in a protracted downward phase. Again, a single person– be it a politician or (ESPECIALLY) a single fairly irrelevant citizen has no effect. The state of the country depends on historical events and cultural Zeitgeists — the last eioght years were disastrous. I think in macro terms. You think in “everything is local” terms.Hey, I don’t care. The “ignorant bliss” is yours. I usually leave you guys alone– unless you fuck with me. Then it’s delusion-bustin’ time.

  • MG

By the way, I recognize that WW2 didn’t end when Roosevelt was alive — (my correction) the boom actually occured during AND at the end of WW2.His reforms paved the way for it.

  • bajasteve

I think in “everything is local” terms? Now you’re a mindreader, as well as all your other superior talents. You are the one with delusions, “my friend”.
