‘Dude — I Didn’t Even See You!’

(That’s what the idiot driver said to me as I was sprawled on the pavement.)

Jamie from C&L and Intoxination sent me this link. Fellow cyclist Ezra Klein on bikers vs. cars:

…the dangers of biking have a cultural component. American drivers aren’t very used to bikers. They’re not on the lookout for them. When they do see them, they tend to be offended by their presence, and dumbfounded that they’d try and take up a lane and slow down the road’s rightful users: Cars.

As Jamie pointed out, some of the comments from drivers are disturbing.

The other day, I was riding with my daughter and a guy in an SUV pulled up next to us and yelled, “Are you gonna take up the whole road?!” Naturally, I yelled back, “YEAH!” It’s worth noting that we were in a residential neighborhood with zero other traffic — and the driver, while yelling at us, was driving in the on-coming lane.

However, I concede that some cyclists do dumb things, but the tie should go to the weaker competitor. A car will always kill or injure a cyclist. Vice versa not so much.

Conservative/Libertarian voting for Obama here… great blog. Quite funny!I see you referred to yourself as a cyclist (as opposed to biker). Please keep spreading the word, as I’d hate for any unsuspecting cyclist to stop into a biker bar… it might not end pretty.

Bob, the best protection that a bicyclist has against angry motorists is to follow the driving laws of his/her location to the letter. Anything else gives these angry motorists the permission to hate all bicyclists for all time.

Sorry, NorCal, but this type of driver is like a conservative: anything different from what they view as correct, acceptable, normal, etc., is by definition bizarre, subversive, abnormal and just plain wrong. That justifies harassment, abuse, even physical attacks. It doesn’t matter in the least if a cyclist is obeying the law down to the very last word and semicolon; they are evil and a threat to this bozo’s lifestyle.

We’ve actually had a battle going on here in the Cincy area with a large landscaping company. The owner of the company has basically told his drivers to “piss off” cyclists and it has caused all kinds of problems. Luckily law enforcement has now become involved and it might put an end to it (or really increase the cost of doing business for the landscaping company).Over all it was because the company feels like they have more of a right to the roads than cyclists. It’s a big load of manure – and not the manure they haul LOL.
