Senator Obama Screwed Up

Senator Obama voted for the FISA Amendments Bill which passed this afternoon by a large margin.

No sir. I don’t like it.

This was a major mistake by the senator. Even though it’s terrible for the country, it’s not irreparably bad for the campaign, but it certainly won’t help his netroots fundraising efforts.

I don’t understand why Dodd and Feingold decided not to filibuster. Maybe this has been explained, but I haven’t seen a compelling explanation. It’s tempting to think that maybe there’s some “secret plan” driving the FISA cave by Senate Democrats — the denial phase of grief, maybe. Still, I wonder if there might be something so overtly unconstitutional about the law that even Justice Kennedy would rule to strike it down. It’s my wistful stab at a benign explanation: because the Democrats literally cannot accomplish anything constructive with an obstructionist congressional minority and insane lame duck executive, maybe they’re using an asymmetric strategy in order to fast-track the law right to the Supreme Court, hoping that Kennedy will vote with the sanity caucus on the matter.

Obama voted for it? All I can ask is what the fuck?

I disagree Bob, I think this is very bad for the campaign! We just had Fox Noise accusing Obama of a flip on what he said about Iraq (which if you listen to what he said, there was no flip) But now, there actually was a flip. He said he was going to fight the retroactive immunity when it got to the Senate, but then he votes for it. What the fuck?

I’m waiting for a rational explanation.Right now, I feel betrayed.

Progressives, Libertarians, and citizens who value civil liberties and the constitution, specifically the 4th amendment, sent a strong and clear message and in impressive numbers to Obama and the Democrats, but their voices were ignored.Today’s vote was a complete betrayal. The only reason people like me are still supporting the Dems is because we have no other real choice. They remain the lesser evil.I’m sorry to say it, but those who truly believe that the Democratic party actually stands for what its leaders publicly espouse, are saps, suckers, stooges, rubes…

Rachel Maddow and David Bender have been talking about the fact that the new FISA bill limits only CIVIL liabilities and does nothing to stop criminal cases from going forward. Perhaps things aren’t so bad as they seem…
