Shirtoff Chertoff Scaring Americans Again

IEEEEEE!

“The terrorists are deliberately focusing on people who have legitimate Western European passports, who don’t appear to have records as terrorists,” Chertoff told lawmakers. “I have a good degree of confidence we can catch people coming in. But I have to tell you … there’s no guarantee. And they are working very hard to slip by us.”

Chertoff and other intelligence officials have delivered similar warnings before, and he offered no new information about specific threats or an imminent attack.

Chertoff reiterated his concern that terrorists could sneak radiological material into the country on small boats or private aircraft. This material could be used to create an explosive device known as a “dirty bomb.

My suspicious question for the day: if they know terrorists are trying to rip off passports and enter the country via small boats carrying dirty bombs — why the hell aren’t we apprehending these people? The obvious answer is… these plots don’t really exist.

Is this the same gut feeling from last year? Do gut feelings carry over from year to year? This reminds me of when Jon Stewart explains the efficacy of the phrase, “No disrespect.” Though it doesn’t mitigate what was just said – “Your mother’s a whore. No disrespect” – it just makes it sound lighter. So, for terror, just mention some random plot that is “possible,” then claim a gut feeling, or concern, or “good degree of confidence.” By the way, if you want to read pure absurdity, check out Krauthammer’s op-ed on Washington Post. *Shudder*

Or, is this a secret plot so when Obama comes back, DHS can nab some European reporter, claim they’re a “person of interest in the war on terror”, then have the press ask when Obama knew he was traveling with known terrorists, how long he’s been a Muslim, and does he really eat babies?I mean – you’d expect the “liberal media” to totally go along with what the Bush administrations claims – or, at least they have so far (see also WMD’s in Iraq, we need telcom immunity, the Surge is a success, and other falsehoods).

Virtually everyone is on the Terrorist Watch List. Good luck finding a name not on it.Just wait until mid August. We’ll be hearing this every day leading up to the convention. I’m already planning my escape route should they decide to lock down the city during some fake terror alert.

Jesus, John Hummel! How sad is it that what you describe once would have been ludicrous and now seems entirely feasible!Nano – been reading stories about the “crap cannons” and the 88 MK-IV launchers (pepper spray, I think) purchased by the Denver PD ahead of the convention. How are the people there reacting?

Not well. We’re just now learning what it’s going to be like. I heard yesterday there will be no parking in a 2 mile radius of Invesco Field and buses will not be running downtown. Neither will the downtown light rail, which runs right past the stadium. I haven’t seen any of that in writing though, so I could be off by a few.Stand by for the whole area to be blurred soon on Google Maps/Earth…
