Gushing Over Palin

Geov Parrish at BooMan reports that the talk radio wingnuts were absolutely gushing over the selection of Governor Palin.

Of course they are. It fits into their superficial universe. Look at FOX News Channel: style over substance. Look at the last eight years: ideological extremism and political hackery over governing and competence.

ADDING: I’m not suggesting that Governor Palin is superficial. McCain’s decision to select her for the post was clearly a superficial political calculation. Hardly “country first.”

Of course they’re gushing. Rush Limbaugh was hailing the choice of Palin as a great one while ridiculing one of the best speeches ever given in our lifetime at the DNC… but that’s their job. And they love being water carriers for the GOP. It makes them important and it makes them wealthy. What else can they do? They’re credibility is shot. If they tried to do anything else, they’d wither and die….not a bad thought.

This issue of McCain choosing country before anything else needs to be constantly reiterated. If terrorism transcends all other issues today, how is choosing Palin putting the country first? My wife pointed out last night that instead of the incredibly stupid remark about Alaska’s proximity to Russian giving Palin cred, they should have pointed cited energy and border issues with Canada as at least some form of international diplomacy skills.

You see the problem exactly as it is. McCain has run on a platform of experience and “Country First.” When Barack Obama had the chance to politicize his choice of running mate and perhaps even wrap up the election for himself, instead he chose a person he believed would be best for the American people. God forbid anything happen to him, we would all be very grateful he chose Joe Biden as his VP.McCain, on the other hand, decided to be the conniving political rat that he is hoping that American women are stupid enough to fall for this. In her speech, Palin stated that she had the opportunity to “smash the glass ceiling” Hillary and her supporters put 18 million cracks in. Talk about presumptuous. Does she even realize that if McCain croaks she becomes President? Terrifying thought.I don’t want to hear one more word out of the republicans about lack of experience. Congrats guys, you just voided your best argument against Obama. Bottom line: Obama thinks of the people, McCain thinks of himself.

I wonder what the batshit wingnuts will do when Obama takes office and they no longer have a like-minded administration to feed them talking points. Think for themselves? Thats a scary thought.

The wingnuts live in a superficial universe? And here I was, thinking it was a parallel universe! Silly me. Whatever universe it is that they slither around in, it must be populated by mushrooms, since the talking heads keep them in the dark and feed them bullshit.

I am curious to see if the corporate media will ask about exactly how she was vetted–since they , GASP, mentioned HRC was not vetted every other sentence at the DNC. Which is a point that makes sense in that she was not going to be the nominee and would not consent to handing over Pres. Library donors and financial records of Bill. Obama did not cave to the villagers and did not tap Hillary simply because it would not be an ideal “governing” situation with Bill Clinton under the microscope every five seconds. The media knows this, but went ahead beating this moot point to death–but now, I wonder if they will go after the vetting (or lack tehreof) of Sara Palin–doubt it–maybe a little but it won;t be a constant refrain–which in this case it should be since she is one heartbeat away. Do we even know who was on his selection committee?

I just got back from four hours of canvassing in the hot sun for Senator Obama. One of the houses I went to had a husband and wife that are both professors at the Univ. of Michigan. The wife is pro-Obama. The husband explained to me his position like this:”I have ALWAYS voted Democrat but this year I started out leaning toward McCain. Say there’s a continuum from 100% McCain to 100% Obama. Last spring I was 80% McCain and 20% Obama. Then Obama picked Biden and it went to 50/50. After yesterday [when McCain picked Palin] I’m now 80/20 FOR OBAMA.”I heard this type of thing several times while knocking on doors today.

“Gushing” could be just about the right word.Three years ago, I went to the US Open with friends from New Orleans. We went to watch great tennis . . . what we experienced was an entirely different ordeal. We watched people on roof-tops, elderly euthanized, my father-in-law have a heart attack and die.Ironically, the GOP “Brownie, you’re doin’ heck of a job”, celebrating their historical four-year stranglehold on this country. Brownie doin’ a heck of a job, political firings, lost e-mails, executive privilege, VP shoots man in face, secret energy policy meetings resulting in $4+/gallon energy prices, religion over science, destruction of wildlife habitat . . . and so on and so on.While McCain gushes Monday, so will the levees in New Orleans . . . how could we e possibly have foreseen that this might happen?Let the gush begin . . .

Perhaps I wasn’t clear. The US Open is going on now, another hurricane, Gustav, threatens the Gulf Coast and instead of Bush lounging around in Crawford, you’ve got McCain accepting the GOP nomination in the Twin Cities.Bush flew over as New Orleans drowned. It’s somewhat poetic, however horrific, that McCain will be celebrating as New Orleans drowns again. This administration has utterly failed New Orleans. This most recent cry for more drilling defied the truth. Drilling in the Gulf poses an enormeous health threat and offers no benefit.Eighty percent of American energy production is exported. America already has a productive capacity to support all American needs at a low cost. Increased production does not translate into lower prices for Americans at the pump or paying their energy bills . . . it translates into destruction of the American environment, more money for oil companies and more energy for China and India.Show me any study that confirms that increased drilling in America will result in greater access to American oil or to lower prices for Americans . . . You win the Pulitzer. It ain’t gonna happen.

    Bob, thank you.
