Smell the Flop Sweat

They’re really desperate. In response to Senator Obama’s recommendation to keep our tires properly inflated, McCain activists (that’s an oxymoron) plan to distribute tire pressure gauges at an Obama event. I don’t quite get the joke there. I’ll take a free tire gauge, thank you.

Anyway, Bill Scher reminds the pranksters on the far-right:

Where did [Obama] get that crazy idea? From George Bush’s Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency. (hat tip: Get Energy Smart! Now!)

Their joint site fueleconomy.gov is loaded with fuel-saving, money-saving tips. Keep your tires properly inflated, for example, and you can save up to 12 cents a gallon.

Compare that immediate savings from that single tip, with what coastal and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling combined would get you two decades from now: 6 cents a gallon.

And, of course, when faced with the facts, the McBushies are claiming that tire inflation and tune-ups are Senator Obama’s entire energy policy. Seriously. They do. Remarkable, considering this is readily available on the tubes.

Funny. We used to talk about that sort of thing all the time. Keep tires inflated. Keep your car tuned up. Keep it washed (yes, dirt increases drag). No jack-rabbit starts. Drive 55 (it saves lives). Not anymore. There are no more serious discussions about fuel economy beyond the occasional bullshit product that promises to increase gas mileage by 22% (with MAGNETS!!!).Let them hand out gauges. It’s all they’ve got.

Most of what Obama’s talked about has been backed up by officials and/or agencies in the Bush Administration. The EIA says that we won’t see the oil from ANWR for 7-10 years, yet McCain is talking about relief as early as next year. The Bush Administration documented hundreds of oil spills after Katrina and Rita, yet you have Republican operatives continuing to insist otherwise. That’s the problem here. McCain knows all this, but he has to take the contrary position, or it helps Obama win.

ConstanceRifle: That’s the problem here. McCain knows all this, but he has to take the contrary position, or it helps Obama win.I wouldn’t be so nice or forgiving to say McCain is taking the contrary position; as far as I’m concerned, he’s just full-out lying, and he knows very well that he is.It’s just a shame that so many people still believe he’s the straight-shootin’ hombre he claims to be.

Art Brodsky wrote an interesting column today re: allowing offshore drilling subject to certain conditions. Give the GOP what they want, but it’s a fair certainty that the oil companies won’t meet the conditions.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/art-brodsky/an-oil-drilling-platform_b_116735.html
