The Clinton Ad

Eric at TPM has a great idea:

And here’s the ad: A one-minute spot featuring Hillary Clinton herself, talking to the camera and laying into Palin on the issues, her complete lack of qualifications, and the temerity of the McCain campaign to think they could get away with this. Then she urges anyone watching who might have supported her to get out there and support Barack Obama.

Then it closes simply with Obama walking on to the set to shake Hillary’s hand: “I’m Barack Obama, and I approved this message.”

They better do this one. It would be legendary.

That is a great idea. I would also like to see some women’s groups putting out ads admonishing McCain for trying such a ridiculous ploy and thinking women are stupid enough to fall for it. That would need to be done by someone not associated with the BO campaign of course. There’s no reason they couldn’t praise Palin for her successes thus far, but they really need to make it clear that she is not ready to be VP and certainly not ready to be Pres.

Long-time lurker here, finally signing on for some respectful dissent:I think this is actually a very, very bad idea. Of course Palin is extreme and unprepared for the job, but there is a lot to admire about her as well. She has given birth — recently! often! — yet barely missed a beat at her high-powered job. Has first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to be the parent of a soldier, and the parent of a special needs infant. Is refreshingly unstodgy. And is rooted in the greater Pacific Northwest. These are compelling things, for me and many of my peers, aka overburdened, rain-sodden, eco-conscious, flaming liberal West Coast Obamamamas who will never, ever vote for Palin but like seeing her in the spotlight. Hitting so hard on weaknesses that should be self-evident to anyone who could possibly care about them, just makes us look weak, condescending and mean ourselves.

I hear what you’re saying, tiadebella, but must disagree. The whole point is: Palin’s awesome working mommy skills don’t qualify her to be One-Heartbeat-from-the-Presidency anymore than Dub’s accident of birth did (yes, and didn’t THAT work out well?). She was picked because she is a extreme ring-winger with a vagina … that’s all.I don’t give two shits if she loves to shoot and eat moose or that she gave her kids names even Hollyweird liberals wouldn’t touch (Track? WTF?); I do, however, care very much that she thinks teaching creationism in public schools is a good idea, and that abortion for any reason (including rape and incest) is bad.Combine her with a doddering, war-mongering, egotistical jerk-off like McBush, and it’s a recipe not for yummy cookies, but all-out disaster. I was laughing about this yesterday. Today? Not so much.

Readytohurl, I agree with everything you’re saying. Who the hell claimed that McCain-Palin is a recipe for yummy cookies? The point I was trying to make is a different one: that staging a Clinton-Palin catfight ad is unhelpful, in large part because it would insult the intelligence of those it is trying to win over. Ditto any other ad that tries to score points by “admonishing” McCain for his “temerity.” OF COURSE this was a desperate pander attempt (but still a fascinating choice).

On second thought, Readytohurl, I don’t agree with quite everything you said. Obviously Palin lacks a lot of other qualities we would like to see in a VP candidate, but don’t knock the working mommy skills.

Tiadebella, believe me, I’m not knocking working mommy skills. Working mommies have my utmost respect. Always :)
