Liveblogging Prime Time

Open thread for documenting the prime time cable news hackery.

6:30PM EDT
I’ll get the ball rolling here… On MSNBC, David Gregory — the network’s new election coverage anchor — just said that Senator Obama is going after Sarah Palin on her Bridge to Nowhere flip-flop, “but why is Obama going after a number two?”

‘The hell?! Scatalogical “number two” jokes aside, this illustrates THE problem with cable news. The focus ought to be on Sarah Palin repeatedly lying about the Bridge… not Obama. But Senator Obama is the Democrat in this thing, so there must be something screwy and weird about what he’s saying. Not the Republican. Of course not.

6:56PM
David Broder to Stretch: McCain is basically “an antiestablishment reformer.” So how does Broder explain McCain voting with the president 90 percent of the time? Turtle!

7:03PM
Oh and not a single mention of Palin’s Freddie/Fannie goof today.

9:15PM
You better be watching Rachel Maddow’s show right now. If you’re not, you better have a really good excuse, ya’ slouch. Steve Benen was awesome — though he looked like he chugged a cherry Slurpee before his appearance.

10:01PM
And she ended with a cycling story. Perfection.

    Palin/McCain ARE the bridge to NOWHERE!Repeat it!Often!Loudly!!

I am firmly convinced that the corporate BBQ media holds so much power over the direction of this country–their framing is crucial. Especially with respect to the last eight years, and most importantly the decision to invade Iraq–all enabled by the MSM. It’s all about the framing. Example: Sarah Palin is a “rock star.” Never mind that she hasn’t answered any questions and continues to lie about her record–never mind her stance on the issues. The right-wing has learned to play the MSM like a fiddle all the while continuing to have “the liberal media” label stick. As well as the “the media loves Obama” label that hasn;t been in effect since February. Obama has been under the microscope for six months–unreal. They have pounded this idea that the media LOVES Obama because he is a “rock star.” Never mind the fact that Obama became a “rock star” because people voted for him based on his stance on the issues (particularly Iraq) as expressed in numerous interviews and over 20 debates–and in the process defeated the most powerful Democratic machine in the modern era—there is a huge difference between Palin’s annointment and Obama’s ascendancy but the BBQers are equating the two as if they are the same. The Dem advocates really need to push back on these framing of these narratives by the MSM.

But Bob, the good stuff is coming in the repeat of Tweety. He apologizes to Heather Wilson for asking her tough questions.Gelded.

  • http://unrelatedcontent.com Travis Disaster

Man at what point will they stop taking David Broder seriously? Has 8 or so years of being constantly wrong not been enough evidence? At least the Serious Media™ has relegated Monica Crowley to McLaughlin-only status.

  • idreamofskiba

This big city shit pisses me off. Why do they make it seem like only small town folks are real Americans?I don’t know about Colorado. Some days I’m encouraged by the sea of cars with Obama stickers on my drive home, but most of the people I talk to don’t seem to be on board.

  • ceu

Headline at HuffPo:Highest Unemployment Rate In Five Years… Housing Crisis… Stretched Military… Resurging Taliban… Energy Drought… Never-Ending War… Growing Nuclear Enemies… Global Warming… Lack Of Healthcare… Underperforming Schools…Needs to be repeated as often as possible.

  • LoewLife

Man… David Gregory is so boring. And I was SO looking forward to seeing Keith’s commentary on election night… msnbc is gonna lose so many viewers if they don’t find somebody really dynamic to counteract Gregory’s boringness

  • idreamofskiba

    I can’t stand Todd Harris.

  • LiveFreeOrDie08

I wrote before that the problem we’re facing here is that those who have voted Republican in the past are looking for a way to vote for a change w/o having to consciously admit that they are to blame for this mess in the first place. They’ll throw Bush under the bus and say “it was him, not us” that caused this catastrophe. We’re good people.Denial baby. It’s powerful stuff. So how do you get a Republican to get off the junk when they don’t even know they’re addicted? It’s very much like getting an addict into rehab. We need to promote interventions. Non-threatening pointed discussions. Take a co-worker or family member out to lunch, or for a drink, or to get a coffee, and say “Hey, we really need to talk.”Just like that alcoholic that could be the guy that runs your family into the ditch because no one wanted to step up and ask him for his keys, the guy you work with could be responsible for pulling that lever that changes your life forever. Are you gonna let it happen?

  • MCat

I can’t wait for Olbermann tonight! Obama will be on there and then Rachel Maddow’s show following after it!is anyone going to watch the 2nd part of Orelly’s interview with Obama?

  • amaraya

MCat – I might be – my dad is home from his trip out of town and is a bit more of a bill o viewer than Keith. We’ve compromised that he can watch football til 8, and we’ll be checking out Bill O during commercials on Keith. There will be no compromising on Rachel.

  • MCat

    lol ok Amarayaits on!!

  • jane

Howdy folks.Idream- Todd Harris=fucking tool. Even crazy Uncle Chris Matthews seemed to school him a little bit.

  • JG

I honestly think Obama and Biden need to start calling lies, LIES. Funny how the BBQers called Al Gore a liar about the most trivial stuff like “invented the internet”–these weren’t even lies, they were how the BBQers framed some of Gore’s assertions, and yet they let bold faced policy lies go from McCain and Palin. I honestly have never seen this kind of lying before–Sure there is always spinning, but lying on this level is definitely new–and the MSM will continue to let McCain and Palin off the hook until Obama/Biden start hitting back hard on this–

  • jane

This whole MSNBC taking Keith off live coverage pisses me off. We all need to write these fuckers, just like those screaming Republicans, and say, sorry, I’ll be watching CSPAN (or PBS?) so I don’t have to listen to your fucking talking heads.

  • amaraya

So Bill is wigging about his taxes. He says cutting taxes for 95% and raising it for his 1% is “class welfare”. He is freaking out. Obama looks like he’s trying not to laugh at his antics.

  • JG

and again, how is Palin being sequestered in “cone of silence” not the biggest story if the day?

  • MCat

@ Jane I so agree!@JG I agree to that too, but at least he’s saying it without saying it

  • ceu

Obama right at the top on KO!

  • jane

JG- YEAH. How DO you combat LIES without lying yourself? the only way I can see is to call them out for the lies that they are. McPain/Quaylin are lying every time they open their MOUTHS lately. About Obama’s tax plan, about the wonderfully Mavericky (emphasis icky) things they’ve done, about the flags after the DNC, the bridge to nowhere, the EBay sale of the jet “for a profit”…about anything that involves facts and not opinions they’ve been flat out lying and it’s really pissing me off today. (drinks beer quickly)

  • jane

Amaraya- our office mgr (very pessimistic) thinks the reason the talking heads really want McCain is cause they’re in that top tax bracket (over $250k) that would suffer a tax hike under Obama. Whaddya think?

  • http://www.cybergal619.blogspot.com cybergal619

Gregory is a putz. I was bummed that he’s gonna be the election chair….guess it’ll definitely have to be C-Span for moi. I am glad, tho, that I live on the west coast. That way I don’t have to see or hear his awful Rethug Catch Phrase A-Thon show.Obama/Biden have GOT TO GET TOUGH AND SOON!!!

  • ceu

Keith quoted Truman: How many times do you have to be hit over the head before you figure out who’s hitting you? Obama hitting on the issues and his contrast to McPOW. KO talking about Freddie & Fannie and the economy. Obama saying that the Congress didn’t pay enough attention to F&F, but that not regulating the financial markets, the benign neglect, has to stop – some regulation is good for the markets. The economy sucks, unemployment up, foreclosures up, wages flat-lined, etc. If you like that, vote McPOW.And later KO’s gonna show the video of Sarah Lou addressing the church about praying for the gas pipeline to be build, etc.

  • http://www.cybergal619.blogspot.com cybergal619

Ummm, the reason for the west coast, no dumshit Gregory thing is that I’m at work when his show airs out here. Soo excited about Rachel, I flaked out.

  • jane

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln5RD9BhcCo(David Gregory playing along with Karl Rove rap at WH correspondents’ dinner 2007)THAT is enough reason to hate David Gregory.(DAMN I’m mad tonite!)

  • cminri

Obama gives “the American People” too much credit for not being stupid….thats why im really getting nervous now..

  • ceu

Is Palin ready to be president? Obama says he’ll ket KO ask her that (they laugh). Says she’s closer to Bush than McPOW is. He’s back to the issues – energy independence, etc.More of the interview tomorrow night.

  • cminri

I have a friend who actually told me that the reason he is voting for McCain is because he thinks Obama will increase the taxes on capital gains. Some people cant see beyond the end of their own noses…

  • jane

    cm-yeah, what is it a whopping 15%?

  • amaraya

Jane – I think it’s possible. I think the people above them are even more likely to lean to the right.

  • jane

And there goes Heather Wilson with that “Obama’s gonna raise taxes on people making over $42k” shit.

  • cminri

Anyone else feeling extra pissed off today???

  • ceu

Go, Keith! Are any of you watching this?? He’s doing a lot of lie debunking. “This is lying to embellish yourself”…including the story about getting rid of the cook at the governor’s mansion.

  • amaraya

cminri – yeah. yeah, i really do. I was trying to prepare myself for the bump in polls, but just seeing the numbers makes me sick.

  • cminri

ceu..i have to get my Keith fix…it might be the only thing stopping me from jumping off the bridge to nowhere…..oh wait….nevermind!

  • jane

…and no Daily Colbert for an antidote tonite!Pissed off, sick, and disappointed…

  • LiveFreeOrDie08

Just sent this to MSNBC:What class at MBA school taught you to throw your two highest valued assets under the bus??You guys are making a bad situation worse. We understood the coverage was a mess and accepted it because we know that everyone at MSNBC is still trying to find their way post-Russert. Just stay out of the way, eh? This is a critical moment in history, boys (look at some of your own news footage)…you should expect, and I encourage, commitment from your news team. Truth does not always have to be “balanced” with a lie..And if you made this move for ratings…OMG!! You really are morons!!For years Democrats have made clear the case that Fox News is an appendage of the Right Wing, and they’ve done nothing in response. Some rabid Republicans chant “NBC” one night at a convention and within days you guys cave?? You’re just idiots.Hey why don’t you guys put that guy on that hosts To Catch a Predator!! At least he’ll call b*llsh!t when he hears it!————–Your turn. email: letters@msnbc.com

  • MCat

Sounds like you all need a cup of my chamomile tea!You think they broke the Obama interview into two parts to counter act the oreilly interview?

  • cminri

    I hate Mondays

  • jane

tea schmea mcat, but thanks. I need a lobotomy now.

  • ceu

Ha! KO just said Palin is “Aimee Semple McHockeyMom”. :)

  • amaraya

I was just thinking – is Rachel the first woman who have her own politically themed primetime show? I can’t think of any others. My dad said Greta Van Sustren but that’s more of a true crime show.

  • cminri

So glad they are addressing the fact that Obama has not been calling McCain/Palin what they are – LIARS. He needs to take the gloves off and stop using gentle language like “stretching the truth” etc…and call them LIARS!

  • idreamofskiba

    I love Rachel.

  • cminri

Dont you just love that fake library bookshelf wall paper some pundits use as a backdrop?!?

  • http://watergatesummer.blogspot.com/ enigma4ever

Rachel is the first Political Woman on MSNBC….( there was a blond with a raspy voice that used to cover the Anna Nicole story…but I don’t remember her name)…..we need more women ;-)

  • http://www.intoxination.net IntoxiNation

Gee – nice college Republicans they have there in PA.

The leader of a statewide group of college Republicans has been forced to resign after posting racially insensitive comments about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama on the Internet.Adam LaDuca, 21, the former executive director of the Pennsylvania Federation of College Republicans, wrote on his Facebook page in late July that Obama has “a pair of lips so large he could float half of Cuba to the shores of Miami (and probably would.)”LaDuca, who previously had called Martin Luther King Jr. a “pariah” and a “fraud,” also wrote: “And man, if sayin’ someone has large lips is a racial slur, then we’re ALL in trouble.”

  • http://watergatesummer.blogspot.com/ enigma4ever

Rachel is being pretty brave to do the Palin Church Angle….( her church is scary…..and should be covered…I have the videos of her church on my blog – and they sent people running)

  • cminri

enigma…I hope those videos see as much light of day as the Reverend Wright videos did…but I wont bet my house on it…

  • MisterX

Like others, I’ve been nervous for months now about Obama not going on the offensive, always playing defense — and, of course, especially these last few days, as the Republican machine ramped up to slander the Obama campaign, outrageous lying, etc. And, I’ve been reading all the advice on the left blogs about how he should be responding. They might be right — my instincts may be right — especially in light of Dukakis, Gore, Kerry. But, I have to say this after watching Keith’s interview with Barack. This guy’s calmness, his self-confidence, it really is something — exactly what we need in a leader, especially in times like these. He really is a once-in-a-generation leader. And, thinking back on how they handled the primaries, I gotta have some faith in them that the calm, long-distance response is the way to go. I sure hope so.

  • amaraya

Part of the problem is that it looks like it should be the answer to the Rev. Wright videos, but they just don’t have the same shock value. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people have no problem with anything Palin is saying in them. I wish we had videos of that Jews for Jesus guy.

  • jane

Enigma- you don’t mean Nancy Grace (raspy voice, covered Anna Nicole)? It might be a stretch. I’m thinking Baba Wawa is a more apt predecessor. Grace is all about crime news and really, do we have to count the sensationalists? Faux has a lot of those.

  • amaraya

I thought of Walters – but she’s more human interest than political. And I’m not sure she ever had a daily show.Anyway – this does feel somewhat groundbreaking… getting a woman in primetime with a show like this.

  • http://watergatesummer.blogspot.com/ enigma4ever

no- it’s not Nancy Grace- though she is blond she covered white women dramas (sorry-but she did- the missing girl in aruba and anna nicole..etc) I can not remember her name..sorry….but she was the last woman that MSNBC had on any kind of show….( I am going to have to find her name)…

  • jane

I think (a true feminist point of view here) the real groundbreaker is getting someone on the air who speaks logically and consistently. Gender is a very distant second these days.

  • jane

P.S. snark, snark, snark.Sorry. Just realized I’m much too serious (angry) tonight.

  • cminri

The raspy voiced blonde was Rita Cosby..i couldnt stand listening to her…glad she is gone…

  • cminri

jane..im in that same state of mind….thats why i was glad to be able to come to vent to all of you…

  • jane

Baba was a co-anchor back before there were the eponymous “news” shows we have now. Back when there really was a barrier.

  • amaraya

Well, with the goofy chicks on Fox News being some of the few females we see on cable news, Rachel is a breath of fresh air. I love hearing intelligent analysis from anyone, but a woman is a serious bonus for me.PS. No worries – I have tremendous respect for snark. :)

  • MCat

For msnbc to no longer be using olbermann and Matthews for the live election coverage they sure do keep showing their commercials for it

  • http://watergatesummer.blogspot.com/ enigma4ever

Jane is right…just finding a Logical Rational Person speaking truth is damn near a miracle at this point…no fluff, no pandering….I just hope they let her do HER show- HER way….( thank you for remembering the name of Rita- yup- that was her…yuck)

  • jane

And another thing! Fuck those “divided we fail” ad people. Do they think they’re going to get anything they want if McCain wins??Eh. (Drinks beer)

  • http://watergatesummer.blogspot.com/ enigma4ever

yeah- why the ads if they are not going to fully use them ? what is with that?

  • cminri

I love Rachel..but Im not loving her graphics…

  • kansasdem

8:44 PM Central Time, Hannity pointing out that Obama admits being Muslim!

  • jane

Hope I’m preaching to the choir here, you all DO know not only didn’t she sell the jet on EBay, and not only didn’t she make a profit, but she also sold it to someone who was a contributor to her Gov campaign (at a loss)?

  • jane

KD- is that when he said “McCain (himself) hasn’t commented on my Muslim faith”? -which is as true as well as what he meant to say, “my Christian faith”? fucking tool.

  • MCat

@ kansasdem I was forwarded a clip where he slips and says something to the effect ‘mccain hasn’t mentioned my muslim faith’ but it was a misstatement from what I can tell and it doesn’t show the question being asked, but he meant to say mccain hasn’t mentioned him being muslim or something like thatI believe he was being interviewed by george snuffeluphagus

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

@ Kansas – I knew that Muslim thing wouldn’t take long.

It’s my only night off and I spend the evening with my wife so I’m DVR-ing Keith & Rachel, but I flipped on for a sec and yes, Rachel’s graphics need some sprucing up. Whoever’s in charge of MSNBC graphics (Race for the White House as well) needs help.

  • cminri

Oh crap…she has Pat Buchanan on ….. where is my remote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MCat

OMG! Pat Buchanan is a tool!

  • MCat

OMG now we’re back on obama’s pastor I’m glad she interrupted him he’s such a bigot and hypocrite

  • jane

Sorry, I’m on the DVR delay (eating dinner and all), but about Pat Buchanan on Rachel–I can’t wait. Those were some of the best slams she landed on him during primaries! If he’s on there he can’t be too happy either. It’s Rachel, folks- she’s not letting him get away with any bs unchallenged, is she?

  • kansasdem

Folks, don’t get me wrong here! I know it’s BS. It was truly a brief moment where Obama could be quoted as saying something that was not intended!I could honestly give a crap less if he’s Muslim, Christian, or anything else. I’m agnostic and I’m much more interested in policies and issues than I am which boogie man he believes in.What I do know is that most Democrats seem able to separate church and state while most Republican’ts can’t!Holy war ………. holy shit!

  • ceu

I’d kind of like to see Hannity address that and the Rev Wright (“He was his pastor for 20 years!!”) at the same time. His head would spin wildly before exploding.

  • MCat

ok they can keep this just enough segment, doesn’t really flow

  • idreamofskiba

As far as Obama’s “pastor problem” goes, do you think it has already done all the damage it could do? I mean, is there really a person left in America who hasn’t had that pounded into their brain by the media?

  • cminri

Signing off now gang…its been real….as someone once said “tomorrow is another FNing Day” (I’m paraphrasing!) NIGHT!!!

  • ceu

Good first show for Rachel. Hopefully she can find a reasonable GOPer (ha!) somewhere so she can boot Buchanan.

  • jane

Wasilla Assembly of God- WAG the god, for short.

  • jane

goodnite cm! Pray for the pipeline!

  • cminri

sorry jane I couldnt hear..i was speaking in tongues…..Yikes!

  • jane

Does Rachel have fake eyelashes on? or do I need another beer?

  • nriordan1

I am absolutely appalled at Pat Buchanan and his Republican cohorts (for lack of a better, publicly appropriate word) have the nerve to act offended at questions surrounding Sarah Palin’s church. If anything they are lucky it has not exploded in the national media. Wait, I’m sorry, why would I ever expect that to happen? Only slightly more well-known politicians that happen to not be white are questioned viciously for weeks about their faith and their personal church. If you want to make an issue out of it Pat, you better be damn ready to face the same kind of scrutiny. For every ounce of “hell fire” seen at Reverend Wright’s church is an equal amount of misguided anger at Sarah Palin’s church. How DARE the Republicans exhibit such blatant hypocrisy and expect to get away with it. And sadly, they probably will get away with it.I didn’t want to believe that the Republican party was racist, but this undoubtedly proves it. Palin was/is more of a mystery than Senator Obama was when he first became a serious candidate to run this country, but the media demanding to know more about her is “sexist”. Remind me of any time Senator Obama or the Democratic party has invoked racism when conservatives repeatedly question his motives or refer to him as exotic. They haven’t. You wanted a fresh face Senator McCain? You got one. Now shut up about the scrutiny this kind of decision provokes.Disgusting.

  • kansasdem

9:04 PM Central time: damn, Dana Bash did report the truth about Palin and earmarks!

  • cminri

I noticed the fake eyelash thing too..she seemed to be blinking a lot more than usual…(Im really going now…really…i am…..)

  • jane

cm, we’re all praying for you…

  • J M Ashby

That McCain-Palin ad with the quotes makes me feel like im going to puke.

  • jane

JM, take some Pedialyte so’s you don’t dehydrate…Nov 4 is a loooooong way away.

  • J M Ashby

I don’t care what any polls say, I don’t think McSurge has any chance in November. The only way he could possibly win is with massive fraud.

  • jane

The fact is, Sarah Palin has the biggest and fanciest flag pin out there these days.

  • ceu

Unfortunately, JM, the GOP has a lot of experience and does voter fraud very, very well. :(

  • J M Ashby

If another Florida in yr2000 moment happens, I think we will have the worst riots since LA.

  • jane

    East coast says zzzzzzz…..

  • jane

    taking an angry nap…

  • bajasteve

ceu – There was/is a guy named Kevin (can’t remember his last name), who was (I think) involved wih Mittens’ campaign. I’ve seen him on MSNBC a few times in the role of GOPer talking head. He seems to be intelligent and not a kool-aid drinker. He was always ready to concede a point if the argument was well-reasoned and backed by facts. (sorry I can’t remember more about his identity – senior moments are coming fast and furious these days)

  • The Space Cowboy

Late night catching up on some reading and ran across this little nugget.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO6dmBm1SFwWish they did not cut it off mid-sentence though; I was kind of interested in what else she may have said.

  • LiveFreeOrDie08

Listening to Rachel report on the 4 day old “Brand New Republican Party” and it strikes me that the melding of church & state is now complete…Born Again RepublicansAbsolution leads to Adoration

  • JG

Is it me, or isn’t just odd that many in the BBQ media are referring to McCain VERY NORMAL post convention “bounce” in the polls as a “surge.” Your liberal media at work…

  • rixxk

It is the Obama campaign’s failure to hammer home (ad nauseum) that McCain is four more years of Bush/Republican policies that allows all these diversions from taking over this election and will lead to his defeat. Repeat after me, “she is Bush with lipstick and he’s Mr 90%.” Rinse and repeat cause there’s only 2 more weeks for ads to be effective.
