Open thread for documenting the constant variety of cable news hackery. Tonight… Why ‘regular Americans’ don’t care about the Bush Doctrine, and — McCain is divorced from reality! Go!

It looks like Ike all night. This thing looks like a monster.

Why is the view the only show actually asking the questions that the media should be putting to McCain?Pathetic.

  • amaraya

I didn’t catch the whole thing but apparently Elizabeth was commenting on those who are saying Palin was treated too harshly by Gibson. Something along the lines of “We aren’t looking for a date. This is the vice presidency and we need to know that she can answer the tough questions”.Aww… Elizabeth, look at you! All making sense and everything!

  • jane

I think McCain had an affair on Reality with Truthiness, then left Reality when it got ugly. Plus I think Truthiness makes more money.Oh, and Hi peeps. Thanks Bob in advance!

We, the blogotubes, need to bring Race out into the open and force the electorate to address the issue head-on. If we enable the racist-vote to determine the outcome of this election, we’re toast as a Nation.I’ve concluded that the experience metric that’s polling dominantly to McCain is a surrogate question for “which one of the candidates is white?”. McCain has no demonstrable experience over Obama that applies significantly to the job.McCain – Tested and strengthened by his time as aPOWObama – Tested and strengthened by overcoming racism and bigotry as a 1/2 black 1/2 white kid growing up in the 60′s and 70′s.even.If you are not racist you are certainly not ageist, right? so I ask you then – what significant experience does McCain have that demonstrates he is more qualified than Obama?(crickets)If you or someone you know is planning to vote for McCain, ask them “If you were black…would you vote for you?”We need to get people to consider…just consider…that race could be a silent factor in their assessment of why McCain seems “better” than Obama. If we can get voters to recognize they are being influenced by race, maybe that will be enough for them to get past it.

Someone should shove Elizabeth Hasselbeck up Rosie O’Donnell’s bunghole. While on fire. That way Rosie doesn’t get to enjoy it.

  • amaraya

um… nice imagery there.Anyhoo, I’m sick of this hurricane already. And why is Tom Delay the one talking about it? Shouldn’t he be in prison?

  • Rollah

Sticking w/ my hypocrisy theme, Bob: re Palin’s comments claiming that Obama’s regretting not choosing HRC –she has foreign policy experience b/c she can see Russia from Alaska; so she must have also discerned Putin’s soul like her idol, W., only without having to stare into his sexist eyes. Naturally, then, she can make the claim about Obama because she knows either all men, all presidential candidates, all male threats, or some variation of that theme. She has ESP; or, simply, she’s already been talking to God about how Obama is wired. Hey Gov., after you tell me what am I thinking right now, put in a good word for me w/ your lord.

  • Rollah

sorry, 1 more: here’s hoping the debates are as much West Wing as a couple of Obama’s lines have been from The American President. Had to dig, but in a 2002 episode, when Martin Sheen’s president was having to face off against the Republican from Fla, played by James Brolin, here’s the quote: “In case you were wondering, “Crime… boy, I don’t know,” is when I decided to kick your ass.” Maybe they meet on stage at the beginning for the handshake w/ mics off, and Obama whispers a similar sweet nothing into grandpa’s dishonorable ear.

  • ceu

Is this it, then, all Ike, all the time? I feel bad for the people to whom Ike is having an impact, but I’m not sure I can bear “it’s expected to make landfall in 5 hours” for much longer. How many reporters can we watch getting blown around and rained on before we BEG for a tidbit of news of other events – like the new sanctions BushCo is imposing on Iran’s shipping or Chavez kicking the US ambassador out of Venezula.

  • lovetheblue

I agree with LiveFreeOrDie08 – it’s time to ask people those very same questions regarding the race issue.Elizabeth Hasselbeck, after signing off, probably shot off an email to McBush apologizing for having to ask him “hard” questions, and then politely offered to suck his dick.Since Sarah can “see” Alaska (wow, those non-Rx glasses must work WONDERS!!!!!!) then as John Stewart said, she must know Santa since AK is near the North Pole.Someone please stop this madness!!!!!

  • ceu

Holy shit! Intro to Countdown – BushCo is saying that bin Laden WASN’T the mastermind behind 9/11; the mastermind was someone they’ve already caught! Why am I not surprised??!

  • cminri

Anyone else feel like we are in the twilight zone??!!!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Bin Laden was just the chauffeur. Will the real Salim Hamdan please stand up?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Earmarks are okay, but pork is bad. WHAAAAA?!?!?!

  • The Space Cowboy
  • cminri

Or maybe we are being punk’d and Ashton Kutcher is going to jump out of the shadows laughing his ass off at us….HAHAHHAHAHHAAAA

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

I have a man crush on Richard Wolffe. The accent puts him over the top.

  • Truth2Pwr

its kinda reminding me of that gadget jim carrey was hooked up to as the joker in batman forever …

  • Truth2Pwr

cminri, wouldn’t that be great! please oh, please let us be getting punk’d. pleeeeeze don’t let people really be this dumb

  • ShelleyBee

Anyone see Hardball earlier today? Tweety called Palin’s answer about not second guessing Israel “the dumbest answer I’ve ever heard from an American leader.”Ha!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Okay, this Bin Laden thing. Of course they’re going to say he wasn’t the mastermind because they haven’t caught him and this gives them the excuse to say that that is the reason they really haven’t “thought about it” too much.

The other reason is that when Obama does catch him as Prez in the first few months of his administration, the GOP can say, “So what? He wasn’t really the main guy anyway.”

Tin foil hat time – Bin Laden wasn’t the mastermind, he was the patsy. The mastermind? Well, you take a guess…

  • ceu

I was going by the blurb before the story. KO said that the statement came from Dana Perrino, who said that the REAL mastermind was Khalid Sheik Mohammad, who we do have in custody and have tortured for information.Next time I’ll wait for the story before posting the blurb. Sorry.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

No problem, ceu. I still stand by my analysis for future reference.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Can’t wait for Rachel to fact check the Palin/Gibson interview. I’m giddy!

  • ShelleyBee

This Keith/Rachel conversation looks weird. Is she in front of a green screen?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

I’m slingboxing Rachel. Is the sound cutting in and out for you guys as well?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Oh, I guess so! Shuster just cut in. We’re getting dome rain in NY and she’s in Ithaca for some reason, hence the weird background.

  • gallery

WTF, are they trying to sink rachels show…. ooops, the shust just cleared it all up.NEVERMIND……How’s everyone tonight?I’m saving up my energy for tomorrow night…. surprise party for a total doll, married to a complete dick.UGH, he’ll take the opportunity to pontificate about the GOP since we can’t punch him in the face at his wife’s birthday party.

  • jane

Yes We Can, Gallery! (punch him)

  • gallery

Hey jane, your a godess. I hear tell your the author of Moosellini.Your brilliant chica. :)

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Fuck that, Gallery. Get drunk, tell them both what you really think, then throw a drink in his face and tell him he’s the reason this country’s so fucked up! … then say “Happy Birthday!”

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Is that true, Jane? Are you the originator of “Mooselini”?! I heard Ed Schultz use it the other day.

  • idreamofskiba

Just got home not too long ago, what’d I miss?(You have good taste, Carl. Richard Wolffe is so dreamy.)

  • ceu

I’ve got an idea! Let’s support MORE offshore drilling in hurricane prone areas! Yeah.

  • jane

I said, at the TIME, I got Mooselini offa “Sadly, No!” commenter ifthethunderdontgetya. (Although I have no idea whether he/she coined it, and I saw it somewhere yet else around the same time.) I claim no credit. Although I liked it then and I still like it, so no flip-flopping.For the record.

  • gallery

HA! (in my best tweety matthews voice)What up Broadway?Getting drunk won’t be the problem. I’m single, and trapped in a suburban nightmare of mom jeans and belligerent brokers who yap endlessly about the arts having to sustain themselves just like any other market. What they don’t GET is that even THEIR choice of art is subsidized by endowments whether it’s by them, or the governments money.JEEZE, it’s not exactly like I was the one who pissed off jesse helms with “piss christ”

  • idreamofskiba

“Tin foil hat time – Bin Laden wasn’t the mastermind, he was the patsy. The mastermind? Well, you take a guess…”Oh…yeah.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

@ Gallery – and what, pray tell, is THEIR choice of art?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Maddow’s connection problems seemed to be fixed just in time for the fact checking of Palin’s interview last night. You know, “with the Iraq, such as…”

  • gallery

I’m taking bet’s……How soon before cindy gets all banged up and jumps the “first dude” ?I mean, come on, Mac’daddy can get some sugar, but cindy can’t?

  • MCat

something seems off with maddow, she looks so tired and worn out :(

  • cminri

How about a debate between Sarah Palin and Miss Such as! That would be super cool and fun to watch. Sarah P MIGHT actually win that one….I said MIGHT!!!

  • ceu

Yeah, MCat. And she just welcomed us back to “The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America Radio”.

  • MCat

hmmm maybe its airing on the radio too?? I don’t know I don’t get the station she’s on in my area in my houseI didn’t think we were going to see anything this all day ike covereage

  • MCat

with this* sorry I’m sleepy and I don’t have my glasses on

  • ceu

Oh, and Michael Isikoff reported that the governor’s office exerted pressure to have a worker’s comp. claim by Trooper Wooten denied. Nothing personal, I’m sure – they wanted the claim denied to protect the family, right?

  • jane

Gallery, I just don’t picture Todd as a cougar hunter.

  • gallery

Well Broadway, the symphony, opera, some broadway,(not avenue Q) the Met….. anything that has social connections. There is an entirely different gang supporting the downtown art scene (but I’m sure you know that)And if you think daryl roth is “downtown” I got some stories to tell you.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

That’s funny! I didn’t hear the Air America part… only half paying attention unfortunately. But you gotta figure it’s the end of her first full week and for some reason she’s in Ithaca (does she live up there?) in a different studio, so I’m guessing it’s a combo of fatigue and new surroundings.

    Sincerely,

    Mr. Rachel Maddow

  • idreamofskiba

I can’t stand that woman’s voice in the McCain ads.

  • MCat

lol thank you Mr. Maddow :)

  • gallery

Todd is only the hunter in E-Lask-Ka….Cindy will jump him in the poolhouse at hacienda 7.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Well, I KNOW Roth isn’t “downtown,” but do they seriously think the opera and ballet would survive without the NEA? I work on Broadway and it’s purely commercial. Very rarely do you get a show that’s around for “art’s sake.” Hell, even the Vivian Beaumont is officially a Broadway house but part of Lincoln Center. Amazing how many rich people don’t know what they’re talking about. (My apologies if you are weathly.)

  • ceu

I think she lives in Western Mass., Carl. West of Northampton. [My Smithie told me that, but I don't know how she knows these things, just that she does.]

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

By the way, I wrote a post about the Sarah Palin Action Figure™ if anyone would like to take a gander.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

@ seu – I think I remember hearing that as well, but that’s a helluva commute! I wonder how she deals with her significant other…

  • cminri

Off topic and slightly random ..but I just hate Glenn Beck….I just had to tell someone.

  • gallery

ME? WEALTHY?Surely you jest Carl.I’m a fucking artist! It just drives me crazy that they think that the arts are OVERLY funded because one half of one percent is paid for by the NEA.Reagan DESTROYED the program and all the conservatives politely applauded. It’s not ever gonna come back either.

  • idreamofskiba

I share your hatred of Glenn Beck, cminri.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Glenn Beck is a complete douchebag and even dumber than Miss “Iraq Such As.” And I wonder how assholes like that get radio and TV shows? How does that happen? I mean, it’s not like public access where anyone can get on, it’s big fuckin’ money!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

@ Gallery – are you based in New York? I only ask because of the Roth reference. And I agree with everything you said. It’s really a shame… and a sham.

  • cminri

@ Carl – It happens because of (wait for it)……..REPUBLICANS – the party of no conscience, standards or belief in Karma.

  • jane

Carl, I saw your Action Figure post. Even the concept of a talking doll truly frightens me.

  • gallery

Kinda. I show in N.Y. but live in jersey. My outrage is national.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Yeah, Caroline, I guess my question was rhetorical, but it just goes back to what I was saying to Gallery – the more I work in my industry, the more I run into some pretty wealthy people, and I swear to Jeebus, some of them are dumber than dirt. And I think to myself how lucky they are to be born into their situation and how completely oblivious they are in regards to their fortunate lives.

Excuse me while I go climb a bell tower now.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Well of course the talking dolls is just silly satire on my part, but funny how KO said something similar tonight.

  • cminri

Now Now Carl…get back down here with all of us heathens! (Btw – I work for a non-profit human service agency and we see the other side of wealthy town every day – scares me to think of what else can happen under 4 more years of a Rethug administration).

  • gallery

I hear ya Carl.My friends love my shit, and I often give them gifts of art for a big occasion, but I have to survive by SELLING my work, and the market for that is RICH PEOPLE.Many are nice. Most are not.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Oh, if only they would use their money for good in stead of evil…

  • cminri

anyway…think Im gonna turn in for the night (one kid is still up!) night all. thanks for the company. Godspeed to all those in the path of Ike.

  • ceu

I get the feeling that the news people WANT this hurricane to do some serious damage – that they were a bit disappointed that Hanna & Gustav weren’t more destructive. They want to report on a catastrophe. I’m wrong, right?[I work for a community foundation so I get to see wealthy people giving money to help poor people. That's pretty cool, actually]

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Hey Gallery – if you have a website with your work, I’d love to see it. My e-mail is on my blog.

Well, it’s been another enjoyable evening chatting with you fellow commenters and very gracious of our host to have us. My show’s finishing up so I’m going to call it a night.

And I’ll have more ideas for you

And you’ll have things you’ll want to talk about

    I will too.
