Open thread for liveblogging the constant variety of cable news hackery. Tonight… McCain invented the BlackBerry. Apparently he forged it from the primordial magma of Pangea.

The contrast between these two candidates and their approach to the economy was stunning today. I think that, for most people at home, the events of the last couple of days should be a wake up call. It will be interesting to see the polls on Thursday and Friday.

Bill Richardson just made a very good point – I knew it, but didn’t think much about it. McCain was Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee! All these banking deregulations went thru there. If he was so worried about it, if he foresaw the problem, WHY didn’t he do something when he had the chance??I’m thinking we’ll be seeing a few ads pounding that point home.

  • http://www.clusterdouche.com Elvis Dingeldein

I’m starting to think this only gets worse for McCain, and that he might be headed for a mild-to-massive Infarction if it keeps up. Once the Palin Bubble pops completely, the pressure for her to speak regularly and candidly, on top of mounting Media Ire and countless missteps by a disorganized and clearly bitter campaign staff, will become a millstone around McCain’s neck that frankly I don’t think he has the will or the vitality to fight. Now, more than ever, Senator Obama needs to consider The Nathan Jessup Strategy: just keep beating the living shit out of McCain until he literally snaps and starts shouting “YOU’RE GODDAMN RIGHT I DID!” It’s time to start wearing the old man down.

Elvis- Classic…I used the Rocky 4 “punch and punch till you can’t punch no more” example, but yours is better

In other news, have you all heard of some right wing group sending out mass amounts of a DVD called “Obsession”? Something about Islamic fundamentalists wanting to kill us all, blah blah blah? I heard something about it yesterday.Well, I must be on someone’s list because mine just arrived. How drunk do I need to get to screen this thing?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

McCain was Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee! All these banking deregulations went thru there.

He coundn’t do anything because it’s the Senate Banking Committee that should provide oversight. McCain was lying AGAIN! The Commerce Committee oversees the following:

Under their leadership, the Committee is composed of 7 Subcommittees, which together oversee for the vast range of issues under its jurisdiction. These issues range from communications, highways, aviation, rail, shipping, transportation security, merchant marine, the Coast Guard, oceans, fisheries, climate change, disasters, science, space, interstate commerce, tourism, consumer issues, economic development, technology, competitiveness, product safety, and insurance.

    No banking, housing or finance.

Extraordinarily drunk, Amaraya. Bombed out of your fucking mind. Here’s Part 1; it will literally make you throw up in your mouth. Asshat fearmongers.

  • recruitgal

I watched McCain earlier today say “I know how to fix the economy”. Wow. A few months ago, he admitted he didn’t understand economics, and had bought Alan Greenspan’s Economics for Dummies book. That’s a serious learning curve. Gotta get my hands on that book…I also like the way he’ll tell us how to fix this sorry mess, but only if we elect him. Sort of like the way he knows how to catch Osama Bin Laden? Methinks Johnny has magical powers…

Curiosity killed the Carl. I just followed Mr. The Elvis Dingeldein’s link to those crazy-eyed Islamic Jihadists on The YouTubes hellbent on detroying our freedoms. Now I can’t get the vomit taste out of my mouth.

  • ceu

Thanks, Carl.I’m on a roll of posting incorrect stuff lately. I hate when that happens…and I had a nice outrage all set to go.

  • recruitgal

Carl, Elvis, Amaraya – I’m going to take your word on this one. I’ve just changed the sheets on my bed…

And now, after having seen the interview clip on MSNBC, McPOW seems to think he was in charge of all that stuff, too, Carl. He said that “every part of the U.S. economy I oversighted”. oversighted?? (no dictionaries for 5 and 1/2 years….)

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

No problem, ceu. The only reason I knew that was because I heard Ron Kuby on Air America today laying it all out and debunking the Commerce Committee thing. But McCain is the self proclaimed King of Deregulation, so you can put that at his feet.

But don’t count on John McCain to push legislation to force an expansion of broadband access, or protect so-called net neutrality. The senator made it clear that he’s a big believer that such legislation usually has “unintended consequences.”

“You are interviewing the greatest free trader you will ever interview, and the greatest deregulator you will ever interview,” he said.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Oversighted? Oversights? I think that was a clever ruse to get us talking about his grammar and not about the fact that he’s a fucking liar.

  • ceu

Richard Wolffe just made a good point. McPOW said today that he’d curb excessive executive salaries and Wolffe said that this is a guy who just a few weeks ago couldn’t define what “rich” is. And that there’s no way that any legislation could do that, anyway, without reaching into the way corporations do business – and that’s not how the GOP works.

  • gallery

Mac isn’t going to have to worry about ANY of this if he keeps “reading the podium” like he’s been doing the last few days. It’s pathetic. He should just tape it and play it back while sitting in a wheelchair.

Rachel’s kicking the crap out of McBush tonight. And her guest will be Bill Maher

  • cminri

    Bill Maher is my soulmate!

  • cminri

So good to hear Claire McCaskill using the “L” word in regard to McCain…LIE!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

I’m DVR-ing Rachel’s show, or as I like to call her, “The Future Ex-Mrs. Broadway Carl.”

  • http://livefreeordie08.wordpress.com LiveFreeOrDie08

Have you seen the “Enough is Enough” commercial McLame just put out??!?!!?It’s like the guy that is so devoid of personality that he adopts the mannerisms, dress, and language of anyone that he’s around.Or is it a sign of senility? There was that House episode where the patient started adopting the life histories of anyone she came in contact with, remember?…maybe that’s it!?I seriously think that if Obama purposely leaked a new slogan strategy we’d see huge banners the next day at the McLame rally that read “McCain: Proud to be a Black American”He’s just desperate. The Palin thing was a hail mary that worked to get them downfield, but now they’re just fumbling the ball for a loss down after down. In some ways I’m glad the Palin thing came along, because it’s now given the media a benchmark against which any subsequent McLame activity will be judged. Prior to Palin, if McCain made it through a speech w/out having to re-awaken more than 30% of the audience for the final applause queue it was reported as a barn-burner. Now the media’s spoiled by the Lying Nun. I smell tantrum!!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

The Lying Nun! HAHAHA!!! But you’re right, it’s been “No, I’m the Change candidate… No, I’m the Ehough-is-Enough guy!” He’ll probably use that Donna Summer/Barbra Steisand Disco song as his new theme. You remember disco, right? When McCain was in his 70′s.

But Palin would tell you that Pangea never existed.

  • thruwithbuzz

I’m watching Rachel right now and I lover her! I hope that’s not being sexist. On the whole sexist thing, isn’t it funny hearing that term from the guy who called his wife a c*#t and volunteered her for the wet t-shirt contest at Sturgis?

  • cminri

@ LiveFree -that sounds like an old Woody Allen movie called Zelig. Ever see it? The Zelig character was like a human chameleon taking on the characteristics of those around him. That was amusing – this is not.

  • ceu

Carl, are you aware that they replay it at 11 eastern? (It’s a Christmas-in-September gift.)Rachel’s definitely doing us proud tonight. It’s….so enjoyable.I saw it, Live. Appalling, ain’t it?!

  • thruwithbuzz

Does anyone else watching Rachel hear the beepers & phones ringing in the studio?

  • ceu

Hey, Alaska. Just want to reassure you that we in the lower 48 haven’t forgotten when the whole Monegan thing started. :) Did you see the link mme posted the other day? Very interesting, and was posted back in July, right after the Monegan firing.http://www.andrewhalcro.com/why_walt_monegan_got_fired

  • cminri

I do hear some kind of beeping and im also seeing some kind of weird shadow going around in the background. Keeping us on our toes??

  • http://livefreeordie08.wordpress.com LiveFreeOrDie08

Thanks for the movie tip cminri. I’ll check it out. Maybe we can cut it together with McLame for a good laugh. God knows I need something to smile about this week!Carl, glad you liked the Lying Nun. Run with it.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Did not know she was on at 11 as well. Now I can watch her twice. :) I get home after 11 from work and try to catch a bit of Jon Stewart, then watch Olbermann & Maddow if I’m not falling asleep before then.

  • http://livefreeordie08.wordpress.com LiveFreeOrDie08

Hey, if any of you are connected into the MSNBC technical world, I’d like to make a request to the geniuses that concocted Rachael’s set. Could you please set the plasma screen to 4×3 so the guests faces don’t keep stretching and squishing every time they cut between the guest and an over the shoulder shot reaction shot from RM? It’s really quite unsettling …and a clear technical faux paux. Thanks!

  • grcratty

“Bill Maher is my soulmate! “I’m more of an Olbermann man. Love those Murrow-esque monologues!

CEU,”Bill Richardson just made a very good point – I knew it, but didn’t think much about it. McCain was Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee!”Not to be a stickler here, but um…the US Senate Committee on Banking and Urban Affairs handles banking legislation…and not the Commerce Committee per se.

  • bridget

Typo correction: US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.

  • http://www.ieatgravel.com Alaska

Ceu, yes… I was reading this stories in real time and not after-the-fact like most of the country. I just want everyone to really drive home the point that this investigation was approved by a bipartisan board of 16 individuals BEFORE the McCain campaign chose her as a running mate. Also, Sarah Palin all but praised Monegan after she let him go, and offered him a commissioner job in a different department. Would she really have done that if he was as “insubordinate” and as “obstructionist” as the McCain campaign is saying today?Lies Lies Lies.
