Oh My God

Video of Palin fumbling through Gibson’s question about the Bush Doctrine:

Palin has obviously never heard the term “Bush Doctrine” until the moment Charlie said it. “His world view?” she asked. She doesn’t know.

This is remarkable footage. She’s absolutely nervous and can’t catch her breath. But what’s worse is, like Quayle and Bush, you can literally see the steam shooting out of her ears as she struggles to find an answer — any answer — that has to do with something foreign-ish. And how about the Bushie-petulant-snippy, “In what respect, Charlie.”

A heartbeat away from the button.

Staggering.

UPDATE: JG in the comments nailed it: “this is THE REASON we are in a Iraq.” And she’s never even heard the phrase.

UPDATE THE SECOND: In her final remark in this video — once she figures out what she’s talking about — she explains that if we find out about an imminent terrorist attack, we should invade. Period. Not apprehend, arrest and thwart the would-be terrorists. No. We have to invade with all available military force. Even George W. Bush hasn’t been that hasty and irrational.

UPDATE THE THIRD: Oliver Willis: “the Bush doctrine is bunk.” Of course it is. And it’s a shame that President Bush’s crazy, irrational preemption policy gets its own “Doctrine” title. Nevertheless, it’s a phrase that’s been repeated along with its definition about a gazillion times throughout the last eight years. And the Republican nominee for vice president — on a ticket with a 72 year old cancer survivor — doesn’t know. I can’t underscore enough how astonishingly bad this is.

UPDATE THE FOURTH: Just thinking about… “U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some in our nation don’t have maps, such as and.”

That is what I flagged immediately–I got a lump in my throat when I saw this. Again, this is the central tenet of Bush’s foreign policy–how she does not know this is a HUGE red flag. This is not a gotcha question about who the Mayor of Guadalajara is–this is THE REASON we are in a Iraq.

Oooooohhh…when she talks about the “beauty of democracy” I threw up a little. In someone else’s mouth.

OH SNAP!!!”There have been mistakes made, and with new leadership – and that’s the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy – is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better.”Run that quote under images of housing foreclosures, derelict main streets, war-torn Iraqi faces, laughing McCain w/ Bush, etc.”I completely agree. I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message.”Run that quote into the ground on every outlet from now through Nov 4th.THANK YOU SARAH!!!

The BBQ media better not continue to roll over. If she doesn’t do a Sunday show this weekend, they need to start pounding their desks. I don’t care if it’s FNS. This sequestering “deference” BULL is ridiculous. She’s not dumb at all, she just doesn’t “get it.” The future of our country is at stake. If she doesn’t do the Sunday shows, the media needs to give her the same amount of air as Biden. Enough–

  • cminri

Just heard David Gergen excuse her lack of knowledge about the Bush Doctrine because average people like you and I dont know it. BUT WE ARENT RUNNING TO BE VPOTUS AND POSSIBLY POTUS! How do they NOT get that?????

  • Zanath

Did Gergen really say that? I thought he was smarter than that. That’s the excuse people use when they know there is no excuse. I have heard the term but I couldn’t tell you what it was off the top of my head. BUT IM NOT RUNNING FOR VICE PRESIDENT.

  • Nanotyrannus

Uhm…. I thought they were prepping her or this interview. She was channeling W, no doubt in my mind. She Bush Answers to everything. You know, the kind of answers that say “I don’t know what the fuck you are asking me about.”While scary as hell, it made me laugh. Of course, the Republican spinners are probably already out there talking about what a win this was for McCain/Palin.

Even despite the mistakes, it’s clear she’s trying too hard to appear convincing. She’s clearly in over her head here. I just hope the rest of the country realizes it before its too late.

Sigh….On a brighter note, I just finished watching the Candidates Forum on National Service. Both candidates were good, but Barack was great – And Chris Matthews talking with Rachel Maddow afterwards just made me wish that he wasn’t married.QT

  • JG

I Divo’d Rachel Maddow–I have to say, as much as I love KO, I am over the moon for Maddow; smart, measured, tough, fair, and FINALLY a TRUE LIBERAL advocate that really knows what shes talking about. As great as KO is, he is more of an anchor with liberal leanings than a real “liberal/Democratic” voice.

  • PackyJ

I hope to god that the American public wakes the fuck up in the next 54 days. This woman makes Dan Quayle look like a frigging scholar.By the way… I’m an Alaskan that DIDN’T vote for Ms. Palin.

  • JG

Oh my God! I swear, that is what I said as soon as I heard that exchange–I watched an East Coast feed here in L.A., and as soon as I heard it, that is exactly what I said–out loud. While I am not a Charlie Gibson fan–this was an EXCELLENT question because it is NOT as “gotcha” question. It is so revealing that she did not know it–it would be akin to asking her about “trickle down economics” on the economy side–There are certain “core” ideas–Whether you agree or disagree (and I think the jury is out on “The Bush Doctrine”), I am shocked that she did not know this. But again, she needs to be i front of the press more–not less–if she hides after this interview, she needs to be called out for it, and ignored the same way Biden is being ignored.

  • John Brown

This should be shown to every student as a deterrent to cramming for a test.

Charlie Gibson bailed her out when he explained what the Bush Doctrine was. And then it clicked in her frozen tundra brain. “oh, THAT Bush Doctrine!”

  • bibimimi

Sweet Jesus! Bring on them deeeeeeeee-bates!!

  • bibimimi

I was waiting for the “…like the Iraq, and such…” moment. It has arrived.

  • jane

Yes bibibiibimimimi debaaaaaaates.QT, if you’re there? Chris Matthews???? I would have to opt for switching to the gay team and go Rachel first. And JG, I’d go as far as to say KO (LOVE him) is liberal maybe but Rachel actually seems ABOVE sides (LOOOOOVE her).

  • JG

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

QT, if you’re there? Chris Matthews????____________LOL! I get that reaction every time I say it. But I adore him. He’s such a slobbering mush bucket of over the topness – in a good, genuine, love the country kind of way – and today he just slammed McCain in particular for the lipstick crap. I don’t have to agree with a guy to know his heart is in the right place.BTW – that’s why I’m always here. Bob has a bit of that over-the-topness himself.QT

  • JG

Is the dam about to break? Looks like it’s leaking BBQ sauce. This from AP’s Charles Babington who was one of the few who lambasted Obama’s DNC speech–the one KO called out.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/11/analysis-mccains-claims-s_n_125839.htmlWhat is still odd to me is how this isn’t the TOP story on EVERY news outlet. That Joh McCain and Sarah Palin have continually LIED to the American people about their opponent. And incredibly, the BBQers still attribute the negative campaigning/lying to both sides.

  • jane

QT, I don’t hate CM, not by a long shot. I think he’s crazy, sometimes funny…but hottt? Not!

  • jane

Though I do love how Chris says “Cheeny” instead of “Chainy” (and that’s how Dick and the Cheneys pronounced it pre-George W).Heh. Dick and the Cheneys.

  • JG

Matthews is a tool. Tweety is like the brush one uses to apply BBQ sauce. He has been brilliant the last two days, but he blows in the wind depending on the day, and segment. He has no compass–just whatever he thinks will get applause. Read his reaction to Bush’s play date on the aircraft carrier–aka “Mission Accomplished.”

  • JG

Jane good point–what happened to principled, honest debate? Everyone on TV seems to be knee-jerk, by the numbers shills–is there any truth? That was what was so amazing about the Noonan/Murphy open mic. They’re all bullshitters–They’re THE ELITES. KO is amazing, and can easily be pigeonholed as liberal when all he is doing is pointing out the failings of the Bush admin–following that logic, 80% of America is liberal. Rachel IS liberal, but also has an above the fray demeanor–I have a feeling this show will do very well–even beyond its initial success.

  • JDS

Oh YES Miss South Carolina…exactly! Only we could laugh at poor Miss SC. Miss Alaska Runner-up, not a laughing matter. Just scary.

  • jane

I know Tweety swings both ways, but I think of him as harmless, cause everyone (read: media) knows he’s the “crazy uncle, just ignore him”

  • thruwithbuzz

The question I loved was when he asked her if if Iraq is a holy war, and she claimed that she didn’t say that and Charlie came back with a simple “exact words” Loved it.

  • kansasdem

This is all nothing compared to McBush’s lies at the “service forum”!The most blatant lie: Palin only denigrated Obama’s service as a community organizer AFTER her service as a mayor was denigrated! BULL SHIT!That was orchestrated! It began before “pit-bull” Palin ever spoke! Check out Rudy! He paused for applause! And then McCrazy went on to claim that he’d have run a different kind of campaign if Barrack had agreed to his town hall challenge!Does this fucking idiot think he can get a vote from anyone with a working brain!McCain has truly lost his bearings! And much, much more! What a pathetic fool!

  • kansasdem

Typical BBQ headlines:#1: Obama mocks McCain as computer illiteratehttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080912/ap_on_el_pr/obama;_ylt=AuoY3XY5MMrr_eoLknIVr8ys0NUEIf not for BBQ it would read: Obama Campaign calls Mccain out on the issues!#2: McCain, Obama discuss views on public servicehttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080912/ap_on_el_pr/candidates_public_service;_ylt=AusL.Bb1l6MeOSVmAGUkpwms0NUEIf not for BBQ it would read: McCain lies his ass off at Public Service Forum! If the press bias were any more apparent …………. well, could it be any more apparent?

  • CupcakeCult

I can’t wait for the debates. What scares me is that people will just vote for McCain/Palin anyway. I mean we have a dumbass in office right now. She is not prepared to be in office. This interview really shows it. But the religious right will vote for her just because she is a conservative Christian. Or because she is pro-life. It amazes me how people that are pro-life only care about the fetus until it is born. After that you are on your own! No health care, cut social programs, and send you off to war to die for questionable causes (or downright lies). If they win we will all have to hope that McCain doesn’t kick the bucket. Even though he is scary, it would be so much more scary to have her as a president! I hope people vote with their brains in November!

  • FrictionSoul

Don’t knock KO. He paved the way for Maddow to begin with. No KO then no Maddow.

  • natashacrk

I immediately thought of the Miss America girl when watching this. Very sad, pathetic excuse for a party and a VP!

  • http://www.clusterdouche.com Elvis Dingeldein

I want to talk about something Palin said at the end of the interview, because it pisses me off that such wantonly manipulative language goes unchallenged under the banner of Faux Patriotism. When talking about Iraq, and how she was merely quoting from Lincoln (cough:bullshit!), Governor Palin said this:

Today is the day that I send my first-born, my son, my teenaged son, overseas with his Stryker Brigade.

Putting aside the messianic qualities of the quote, I think it bears saying, and repeating, that unless she literally conscripted Track against his will for political purposes — and honestly, I wouldn’t put it past the Palins to do so — then she isn’t sending him anywhere, the United States Army is. And if I’ve got my math correct, Iraq II: The Sequel started four years before Track enlisted, meaning he knew that in so doing he could be deployed for active combat duty. Also, he gets paid to do this. Not taking anything away from his potential for heroism, but he wasn’t drafted against his will and Sarah’s not sending him anywhere; he’s a volunteer soldier in a voluntary Army and he enlisted knowing full well that he’d have to kill brown people. She also went to the well on the idea that Iraq is somehow crucial to American security and Democracy, saying:

Four thousand other wonderful American men and women to fight for our country, for Democracy, for our freedoms.

I’m sorry, but when are we going to stand tall in The Public Square and call bullshit on this line? No American soldier in Iraq ever fired a single shot in defense of “our country,” American “Democracy” or “our freedoms,” that’s simply absurd. They’re fighting and dying for the Iraqi Constitution, not their own; I wonder if Track was made clear on that point before he deployed. This is jingoism at its worst and it’s terrifying that so many Americans still lap it up.

  • NoSheeple

Elvis, I know that there are several others here who had dibs on you first, but… will you marry me? That post is beautiful.

  • http://www.clusterdouche.com Elvis Dingeldein

Sorry, Mr or Mrs NoSheeple, I’m already cyberbetrothed to “Jane.” Or at least I’m waiting for her to acknowledge my presence. If you’re a dude, then I’m cyberbetrothed to Mr. The Broadway Carl.

  • NoSheeple

If I said I was a blonde millionairess with access to a lot of drugs, could I tempt you into forsaking your cyber-love(s)? Oh wait… scratch that last part. That wouldn’t happen — nobody would ever abandon his betrothed for something so shallow.Oh well. Until then, a girl can dream!

  • http://www.clusterdouche.com Elvis Dingeldein

A girl can, indeed, dream. Hell, at this point a hundred bucks and a bottle of Maker’s Mark puts you at the top of The List, sweetheart.
