Right to Privacy

Roe v. Wade addresses and clarifies our constitutional right to privacy. The McCain-Palin ticket seeks to overturn that right. Odd, considering their latest statement regarding this teen pregnancy issue:

“This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children’s privacy.”

“The media should respect Bristol’s privacy. That’s always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.”

And of course I agree that Bristol Palin deserves privacy. So do we all — especially our daughters when it comes to their medical decisions.

I’m sure McCain wants this election to be about experience and, ahem, issues, but this may turn into a referendum on abortion and abstinence-only programs if Palin sticks around. Is that a path the Republicans are willing to tread?

As BooMan pointed out, it wasn’t anyone on the intertubes that announced Bristol Palin’s pregnancy. They violated her privacy by putting it out there for public discussion. In my opinion, this is just another in a long string of actions/decisions indicating poor judgement on both McBush’s and Palin’s part. And, yeah, Space, the Republicans are willing to go down that path. That is why Palin was chosen, as close as I can figure. It’s what most people knew about her as of last Friday morning – that she was staunchly anti-choice and she supported teaching abstinence-only. What they failed to take into consideration is that the vast majority of Americans do NOT want Roe v Wade overturned.

I’m looking for a source to cite, but does a 17-year-old Alaskan female have the right to choose abortion without parental consent? If not, Bristol didn’t get to “choose” for herself. Her parents made the decision for her.If so, why doesn’t Palin praise her daughter for making this “choice” herself?

No,suli, it doesn’t currently:State Supreme Court Rules Alaska’s Parental Consent Act UnconstitutionalNovember 05, 2007Monday AM(SitNews) – In a 3-2 vote Friday morning, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled Alaska’s Parental Consent Act unconstitutional. The PCA, passed by the Alaska Legislature in 1997, requires girls 16 and younger to obtain parental consent before getting an abortion. The court decided the law burdens a minor girl’s fundamental right to reproductive freedom.”It is outrageous that a minor girl can get an abortion without parental consent,” said Governor Palin. “The State Supreme Court has failed Alaska by separating parents from their children during such a critical decision, moving in the exact opposite direction from the law’s intent.”http://www.sitnews.us/1107news/110507/110507_court_decision.html
