Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot

So I was just in the car and decided to see what Limbaugh was up to. (His 14th Oxycontin of the day — BAM! Zinger!) And in the space of an hour, I heard:

-Obama is slipping in the polls. Really?
-Obama and the “Democrat” Party are injecting racism into the campaign. This from the guy who called Senator Obama “Barack the Magic Negro” and “that little black man-child.”
-Obama is in the middle of the Wall Street bailout mess. Flat out lie.

I’ve heard from a couple of fellow liberal bloggers who have told me that FNC and far-right talk radio aren’t what’s keeping the polls relatively even. But I can’t imagine how they’re not. The most popular talk radio show in the nation is, in fact, a three-hour free infomercial for John McCain. That doesn’t even include the dozens of other hosts on more than 1,000 conservative-owned talk stations nationwide doing the exact same thing. And this doesn’t shape the stereotypes and caricatures about Senator Obama? I find that hard to believe.

Bob–I think you have it right on both accounts–it’s the right-wing echo chamber that poisons the low info voter. It really is astonishing at all the misinformation and hate that is peddled–but, I think, more importantly, it’s the BBQ media that is so fearful of the “liberal media” label that they float narratives where the burden of proving the case to lead is almost always placed at the feet of the Democrats–despite the FACTS and ISSUES. There is a conscious effort to present false balance even when the facts are clear. I really wonder if Nixon would have resigned if it occurred in the era of Faux News…I highly doubt it…

Case in point: I have a Republican friend at the dog park who doesn’t trust Obama because “he may be 10% Muslim.” I ju…I mean…what the…I really hated laughing in his face, but I couldn’t help it.

Bob – I read your post about this on HuffPo and found it invaluable reading, as a foreigner who’s not exposed to the true media landscape in America. I wonder whether Obama should actually do the unprecedented (I presume it’s unprecedented) and *go on these far right talk shows*? see here:http://www.englandforobama.com/its-crazy-but-it-might-just-workwhat do you think?

Quite often people tell me how lucky I am to be deaf. Why can’t you guys just turn off the radio? Why allow yourself to be debased by druggies? What good is going to come out of your outrage?

chanmtoozie–Obama did do this recently. He went on Bill O’Reilly’s show. He did very well, and handled himself brilliantly against the constant interruptions and right-wing talking points. And then , not a few weeks later, O’Liely is back up with this 25 part “series” called the “The Obama Chronicles.” It’s basically a segment done each night underscoring all of the right-wing talking points and fear mongering. I have always thought O’Reilly was the biggest jerk (by far) in the news media, but what he is doing to Obama is beyond the pale. I sent him an Email asking when we can expect to see “The McCain Chronicles” featuring McCain’s 1st marriage and adultery, The Keating 5, and McCain’s notorious temper? Something tells me there is no “McCain Chronicles” or “Palin Chronicles” in the works.Maybe I am being grandiose here, but I honestly believe an Obama win will not only help turn the page on the horrific Bush years, but also help (a bit) towards turning the page on all of this right-wing acrimony that has seeped into our national discourse. Remember, Faux News solidified their grip once Bush was in office–hopefully an Obama win will help reverse that…

JG – firstly, I take your point about BillO (I know Obama went on that show) – but I think to do exactly the same and tackle more people who are spouting this stuff about him, head-on, would only help him and in no way harm him. it would truly help him to reach the people he needs to reach.secondly – I don’t think you’re being grandiose about an Obama win starting a new chapter for America. in the UK, you could feel – *feel* – the change in the air when Labour got into power in 1997, after over a decade of Thatcherism. it was palpable, and truly exciting. immediately, overnight, the values of the right, of the old guard, became utterly redundant. I have no doubt at all that that’s how it will feel in America when you wake up on November 5 to a Democratic win. :-)

I was appalled when CNN’s “fact check” of the Obama Spanish-speaking ad claimed it was unfair to tie Limbaugh to McCain. Defending Limbaugh, CNN said re immigration it was a comment from Limbaugh YEARS AGO, that Limbaugh’s comment was about Mexicans, that Limbaugh and McCain disagreed on immigration, and that Limbaugh was one of McCain’s biggest critics during the primaries. MSNBC also had a “fact check” stating the same McCain talking points. UNBELEIVABLE when corporate media defends Limbaugh. I guess they must think that Limbaugh is pro-Obama, right, and hasn’t been fomenting racist hatred all these months…

We have a local guy, Todd Schnitt, who is carried in a few markets across the country, and he spends 3 hours per day bashing Obama. He constantly claims that all Obama supporters can say are hope and change, but of course if anybody calls in to actually offer some information he berates them. The obvious ones (Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Hannity) are a big problem, but there have got to be hundreds of these local guys!

Limbaugh and the others are here to stay. Their brand of bullshit has proven profitable. They have great ratings because the sheep flock to their shows. A solid 40% of this country is unreachable. Reason and facts have no impact on this huge chunk of our society. Forget about them. As Limbaugh often says, “this is war”. Be sure to win the battles you can and don’t even fight the ones you can’t.

I doubt that it’s Limbaugh et al. who are keeping the numbers close. The people who listen to them would be voting McCain anyway, whether or not there were lying radio buzzards denigrating Obama. Limbaugh’s listeners either agree with him or they know who and what he is. I hate to say it, but apparently there’s a sizable jackass contingent of American voters. They’re going to vote for the jackass(es). “Altzheimer’s, you say? Just rabid liberal propaganda.” “D student? Ummm, I got Ds in school too–she’s just like me!”There’s no point in talking to some people. I just hope there aren’t enough of them to put their fellow idiots in office.(I think the close numbers are due to either an entire bloc not being included in the polls, brain-eating bacteria in our water, and/or racism. I hope it’s only the first. I guess we’ll see.)

@ Katie – “They’re going to vote for the jackass(es). “Altzheimer’s, you say? Just rabid liberal propaganda.” “D student? Ummm, I got Ds in school too–she’s just like me!”- so true. I saw the headline on MSNBC the other day which read ‘Records reveal Palin’s push for earmarks‘ and I swear to god there were multiple comments from people on that story saying that it was an attack on Palin.I find it amazing that anyone would read that headline and think: “That’s outrageous! They’re slurring Sarah again!” instead of thinking: “That’s outrageous! She pushed for earmarks after she said she opposed them!”- but it appears that plenty of people do. *Sigh*.
