That Pregnant Pause

I’ve been noticing — most recently on This Week — they’ve been editing down Palin’s pregnant pause before saying, “In what respect, Charlie?” After Gibson asks about the Bush Doctrine, there’s a wide 2-shot of silence. Homina-homina-homina. Then the close-up of Palin — more pause — then, “In what respect, Charlie?”

The wide 2-shot of silence has been trimmed out in some airings. Oddly enough, another example was on Real Time Friday night.

Her stunned silence speaks to her incompetence almost as much as her ridiculous, clueless response.

I urge that we rally the news agencies to post UNEDITED archives of interviews such as this on their websites. Just like transcripts are available, it would seem that in this multi-media age – getting raw footage up for viewing isn’t an expensive or herculean feat to achieve. Hell, if they wanted they could even charge for it. I’d pay to see (and have rights to repurpose) raw footage. The American public is becoming much more media savvy. Post-production snake oil artists need to be exposed and removed.

I thought the utterance of “In what respect, Charlie?” was dripping with sarcasm, disdain, impatience and arrogance. And the face was NOT meant to charm. Like the kid who tries to chew up the clock by repeating the question, or is given the ’50 words or more’ dictum. She’s in over her head. Ambitious? No doubt. Is that enough? No effing way.
