Lying McCain

Checking in from the road. Had lunch with my very liberal uncle who, right in front of his conservative brother (my Dad), blurted out: “John McCain lies so much, I keep expecting his tongue to swell up and fall off!” My uncle is pretty damn awesome.

Why zit? When a librul speaks truth in front of conservs it seems brave but when conservatives spout their garbage, which they do all the time, it’s just considered normal pissed-off-ness?

Several members of my family wont vote for a “black man.” The sad thing is, my family is pretty far left wing liberal by the standards of this state.I hate to generalize an entire generation, but Im pretty sick of old folks, deep rooted in their racism and oldfashionedness, ruining the future.

Same thing in my family JM. My father-in-law, a long time Dem says he isnt voting this year. I wonder why?

I have a dilemma here. My few old right wing and racist relatives are all dead. My paternal grandparents, some scattered aunts and great uncles…I miss many of them in a personal way but I’m damned glad they can’t cast a vote anymore. My mother, though, is 75 and reads the Huff Post every day, bless her heart. My late Dad always voted with her–she made sure of it by having them vote together, just in case he made a mistake.

JM – then don’t generalize. It’s clear from Bob’s post that the liberal commenter (other than Bob) in that vignette is one of those “old folks”, as am I, as is my 80-something former sis-in-law, as is dontpanic’s mom.Your generalizations are just as mean-spirited and just as wrong as those of the other side against the young, progressive voters who are rallying to the side of Barack Obama to try to elect a forward-thinking, for-the-people candidate, as am I and all htose folks I mentioned in my first paragraph.Don’t be so quick to judge; don’t be so quick to be unthinkingly negative, ok?

Unthinkingly negative? Quick to judge?I dont think the last 8 years culminating with McCain is very quick or unthinkingly. If you held the election with people just 65 or older, McCain would win by something like 40%. If you held it with people 45 or younger, Obama wins by a similar amount.I think thats makes it a pretty safe generalization. Im sure exit polling on election day will reinforce it. Some of my own family would fall into the same group.Obviously that doesn’t include everyone. There are always exceptions. And you’re right, there are a lot of people in my own age group who are, as you put it, unthinkingly rallying against someone who would be better for them.

MY GOD Don’t Panic, did you just say “bless her heart”? It will never be the same. NEVER!

  • dontpanic23

@Poleezz: I’m a southern girl. (At 50, “girl” is stretching it, I know). “Bless her heart” is one of those terms that has many connotations here. I meant this one affectionately only, but often in southern US lexicon, it can also mean (still usually somewhat affectionately) “that person is incredibly stupid/misguided/dim–many others–and I guess you have to be from here to catch its meaning when uttered. It somehow slid off my tongue but in the good way. Hehe glad someone called it out. I love to give the various definitions of that one.

  • Poleezz

I too have many connections from the lower 48. My dear old auntie used to say “Sweet as peaches”. I’m taking “bless a heart” out of my schtick and replacing it with that.

Why don’t some of you suggest to your relatives that they vote ONLY for the white half of Obama. Then they could satisfy both their liberal AND racist tendencies, and not put the country in peril by voting for a madman and an ass hat.
