McCain Backpedals… Or Does He?

Senator McCain needs to deliver a speech not unlike Senator Obama’s Philadelphia address in which he confronts his supporters head-on and walks back the terrorist accusations.

But that won’t happen because now the McCain campaign is going after Michelle Obama. Why? Because Ayers wife was hired at the same law firm where Mrs. Obama was a lawyer. This is insane for too many reasons.

The McCain campaign is now broadening their attack on Obama’s past association with William Ayers to include Michelle Obama — even though McCain has repeatedly said spouses should be off limits during the campaign.

The attack? Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers’ wife and fellow former Weatherman, went to work in 1984 for the major Chicago-based national law firm of Sidley & Austin, and three years later, Michelle joined the mega-firm as well.

John McCain is proving himself to be a dishonorable, lying phony.

Anyone else notice that when McCain starts defending Obama by saying that Obama is a decent person and the we dont need to be scared of him, it sounds like McCain is literally gritting his teeth while saying it? And only in the Reputhuglican party do they have to be TOLD to be respectful – obviously its not something that comes naturally to them.

I was really dismayed watching the video Bob posted of the line outside of the McCain-SarahCudda rally. Then I had to remind myself that She is appealing to the worst of the worst in society, and it is these 18-Percent-ers that are turning out to see their poster girl.Rolling Stone had a revealing article about McCain, he has been incredibly effective at writing the narrative for his career. He simply is not the straight talking, MAVERICK-y guy we have been sold.I thought the Clinton Primary Campaign took a turn for the deceased when she began acting like it was her destiny to win. McCain has that similar sense of entitlement. Like he is disgusted that this new guy is taking away his shot at what he feels he deserves. It is gross and scary.Baring some world changing event, this thing is over.

Terry, knowing how 2000 and 2004 went down, we cannot become complacent. It’s the undecided voters Obama has to appeal to, because he’s never going to change the minds of people who fear change, who fear a black man running the show, who fear liberalism because they equate it with immorality and evil. So anyone you know who is still mulling it over, talk to them. Reason with them.

Don’t think I’ll be able to watch the debate. Things are getting uglier & uglier. Obama called McCain out and now with the sick old guy going after Michelle, the debate will be put or shut up time for both candidates more so than in the 2 previous ones. Maybe I’ll come here & you all can let me know how it’s going. Huh??

Trouble with JMac now is that whenever he says something many of us might (a few years ago) have thought honorable, it just sounds like he’s been forced to say it because the dishonest garbage he was talking immediately before wasn’t working. The sad thing is, he probably believes it’s wrong to talk trash, so his retractions are, in a narrow sense, probably sincere. “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” Isn’t that the way the old saw goes?

PS — yes, to the poster who mentions McCain’s “teeth gritting,” I think McCain finds it hard to stomach Obama because of his relative youth and his not being a military man. I can sort of forgive him for that because he defines his whole existence in connection to his military service, and probably thinks other men should “hold their manhoods cheap” if they weren’t sword in hand alongside him on St. Crispin’s Day at Agincourt. (Henry V, for you Shakespearians.) I don’t care for the mindset I’m describing — it reduces too easily to jingoism and brutality. A lot of military people don’t seem to like it either. War may sometimes be necessary, but it should not define us as human beings.

McCain “gritted his teeth” (as so astutely noted) and said what he had to say in order to provide 2 soundbites for the BBQ media to play over and over to say “there’s the old McCain we know and love” and “what a great guy McCain is!!!!”Elizabeth Bumiller of the NYTimes noted that after McCain said these things, he STILL attacked Obama about Ayers. (Of course THAT won’t be picked up by the McRib lickers…)

  • NotAPollStat

Also — Unlike what they’ve been doing, which is play non-stop Palin rallies in full (particularly last week,) CNN chose to play live “snippets” of her Johnstown rally this morning — I’m sure the snippets are necessary so they can edit out Palin’s attacks on Obama re Ayers, etc. — they can then lie and say how wonderful! Sarah has changed her tenor also.

Can’t be decent & honorable & Arab all at the same time??

  • grcratty

I love the “we’re afraid of an Obama Presidency” line.I understand and empathize. I’ve been living in fear of the President since January of 2001.

  • midad

I think McCain is a racist bigot, pure and simple. He cannot believe that he is losing to an African American. I truly despite McCain now, and any slurs he suffered at Bush’s hand during the 2000 campaign, he deserves and then some. Go away old man.

Today I was thinking it’s time for one Obama’s wonderful speeches but this time on political differences turning into hatred. He also needs to full-on address Ayers–give every boring detail and how irrelevant it is (and the lies flying around about it propagated by mainly Palin and now the media–and relate it to regular folks’ lives in some way and the people they have been remotely associated with but have never condoned any bad behavior by them. Then he needs to shame the “off with his head” idiots but in a very reasonable and calm way. That’s my Obama.THEN, someone in Secret Service/justice needs to find out who these potential killers are and make them eat their words in court and in prison.

McCain should be so ashamed of himself and Mrs. Mosseburger, but they clearly are not. Obama really pisses McCain off — just the fact that he has to share a stage with “That One” really chaps his saggy old ass.And to think I felt bad for McCain when W. shanked his campaign with push polls.Fuck him. Fuck them both. With something hard and sandpapery.
