Man, does this guy just SCREAM insincerity? Really, really, really terrible idea to build an entire ad around his lackluster, nearly tongue-in-cheek delivery. When enraged egomaniacs try hard to appear kind and reasonable and normal, it always rings hollow. This ad is 30 seconds of hollow. With a bad piano track. And a GOLD tie. A gold tie? Is McSelfdestruct just hiring people who want to ruin his political career? Or is he, more likely, leading the charge?

What’s ESPECIALLY hilarious is that this ad is called “Fight.” Even when he’s doing a vocal soft-shoe to drippy music, he can’t help but want to kick someone’s ass. Too bad for him it’s ending up being his own.

So I’m not the only one that noticed the music.Reminds me of one of those ads on daytime TV with old people walking hand in hand.Of course, maybe that’s who this ad targets?

I have a theory. John McCain, still pissed off at the Republican party for hanging him out to dry in 2000 has decided to bring the party down. Destroy it completely from the inside. It was a risky move. It would cost millions and take years, but he’s done it. In just a few weeks, he will finally be able to see the country’s referendum on Republicans. Fuck with me will you? I’ll bring down the whole goddamn lot of you like Sampson praying for one last bout of strength to tople the columns.

Washington is making it worse.” “Bankrupting us with their spending.” “ They refuse common sense solutions for energy independence, so everyday we send billions to the Middle East.”It’s not me it’s you, or more accurately, them. And as for sending billions to the Middle East, let’s conveniently forget that “ Washington” voted for a war that drains $10 billion to the Middle East every month.Christ, what a scary grampa. And to think that John Kerry asked him to be his VP. Sheesh, wtf was he thinking…

Makes you wonder who is really running his campaign. Is it really Rick Davis making these incredibly stupid decisions or does McCain override him and make them on his own. Seems like they are on a rudderless ship. But Im not complaining, because whatever they are doing (or not doing) is working great…for us. So keep up the good work McCain.

@camel54: You know, I’ve been having those same thoughts. What a wonderful thing that would be if Senator McGovernment would announce the whole thing in his concession speech.”My friends, this is not the Republican party I signed up for. You all make me sick.”Nah, probably not.

The last half of this ad – as the camera zooms in and words start appearing next to his head – make mccain look especially old. No, I mean really old. As in, older than he normally looks. Fail!

  • The Colonel

If “The last 8 years haven’t worked very well, have they?” is supposed to be his serious break away from Bush, this is a joke. What a weak ad. Millions of people are thinking. “No $***, the last 8 years were bad, you’re just now figuring that out?”

Strange how history plays out. Had McCain been elected in 2000 we would have never heard from Karl Rove again, there would likely have never been a War in Iraq (and some would argue no 9-11). Republicans would have muddled us through these last eight years with only minor visible signs of ineptitude, and the Democratic party would likely have been permanently defeated simply due to voter apathy. If the Repugs had let him win, they would have won in the long run.Maybe we had to got through all this strife and death in order to reawaken people’s recognition of their role and responsibility to participate in our democracy.(where’d all that come from? kinda syrupy, eh?)

I said it on Wonkette last night but I’ll say it again. I never thought we’d see a presidential candidate who comes off more un-presidential in public than GWB. I was wrong. Time for a new Republican party slogan.”You think that’s bad? You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

  • Groobiecat

LFOD, yeah, ironically I was thinking the same thing last night about McCain (back before his ideological “retrofit”). Good (metahistorical) perspective. I think that your last points are good ones–not syrupy, really.Basically Bush has pretty much destroyed the party’s credibility such that “Republicans” are running on being “mavericks” and not aligning themselves with the party (it’s working in a lot of the “slower” circles of the electorate). Notice how party is rarely brought up–I think it should be. McCain himself opened up the issue last night by doing his scary “gotcha” thing when he said that Dems were in the majority on Cap. Hill for the past two years (insert Penguin-esque “Hah!? HAH?!!” here). Obama should have shot back with, “Wait a second, John, from 2001 through 2006, Republicans were in charge of all three branches of government. Your party set the policies in place–including annual budget deficits averaging X–that got us into this mess. And you’re blaming the Democratic party, which controlled Congress for two years out of the past eight? You and your party had the reins, John, and your party’s experiment failed. So, you can try to call yourself a Maverick, but last time I checked, you’re running as a Republican. It’s time to give the Democratic party a chance to lead–you had your chance and you blew it.”

twoeightnine: FYI…From NPR’s Day to Day program earlier today (“Before the debate, we spoke to undecided Ohio voter Barbara Zimmerman. We check back in with her to see if she got the answers she needed to finally make up her mind. Sort of, she says. But although she wants to vote Republican, the anger in the GOP candidate’s brow left her a little worried.” (NPR’s Day to Day, 10.16.08)”I would love to vote Republican. However, I’m watching McCain’s body language and I’m looking at him and he appeared to be so angry and so frustrated. And what came into my head was ‘how are you going to deal people from other countries who have totally different cultures if you can’t even deal with another American sitting in the same room with you…on a relaxed, educated level? That’s what bothers me, that’s what bothers me big time. Whereas Obama does come across as definitely more stately, more of a statesman, more of a…someone you would want in the White House. That’s my dilemma; I would love to vote Republican..hahah…but I’m just not convinced that would fly…hahah. So it’s almost like I’m going to toss a coin.”http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95787075):“Before the debate, we spoke to undecided Ohio voter Barbara Zimmerman. I still don’t know what McCrankie’s “plan” is.He never gets into details or anything, just “trust me, I know how to fix it”.What a bunch of crap. It’s really sad that the MSM is not calling out his BS – oh wait, I forgot that I’ve given up on them to do anything that resembles “reporting” or “journalism” (love that quote thingie now that it’s got a new meaning).

His prosody is the most awful thing I’ve ever heard. Christ. He’s the grumpy old man awkwardly forced to talk at his five-year-old grandkids.
