Money Well-Spent

Following up on the previous post, we have this:

Who was the highest paid individual in Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign during the first half of October as it headed down the homestretch?

Not Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s chief foreign policy adviser; not Nicolle Wallace, his senior communications staff member. It was Amy Strozzi, who was identified by the Washington Post this week as Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.

Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records.

Heckuva job! Pick a small town mayor for her ability to connect with small town values voters, then dress her up in $150,000 clothing and $22,800 Hollywood make-up.

Epic. Fail.

ADDING… Dammit. I almost entirely missed the big picture on this. Unlike the wardrobe funds which came from the RNC, it appears as if these expenses came out of the McCain campaign. Yep. The mavericks — the reformers — have apparently spent $22,800 in public money — taxpayer dollars — on Sarah Palin’s Hollywood make-up artist.

Not only that, Bob, but back in the day when McCain was a campaign reformer, he demanded that campaign funds NOT be spent on clothing.

The make-up artist is the one thing I don’t have a problem with—they are paying a professional person to prepare her for tv and public appearances. That costs money, but at least its being earned.I said the same thing about Edwards haircut, and I’m sure Hillary Clinton had some hefty bills as well—being a woman only increases the pressure in this area.As for the taxpayer angle, I also don’t care. McCain is free to spend that money any legal way he sees fit. That’s $12-grand a week not buying ads…

    >>The make-up artist is the one thing I don’t have a problem withGood point. I totally agree. But as with many Republican scandals, it’s all about the hypocrisy.

The issue is not that she paid someone to make her look better. The issue is that she claims to represent hockey moms and joe sixpacks all over the country while she shops at Saks and Marcus to the tune of 150k while getting 22k in makeup done. She does not represent jack shit.

Being an Obama supporter, I agree that the funds spent putting lipstick on the pig was to our advantage. If I were a McFuck supporter however, I would be pissed because they hadn’t hired my sister-in-law who sells Avon. No offense to those selling Avon BTW.

There’s another angle that’s starting to bubble on the $150k shopping spree…no matching receipts. Evidently a few of the shops identified have been unable to corroborate the purchases, at least via matching receipts. Oddly as well, Palin’s camp put out a lame statement today that attempted to minimize the issue by saying $50k was just for the convention, $50k is still unopened (stored in the campaign jet) and the rest will be donated to charity at some point. Like any of this lessens the innanity of it all? Also, and such as, they are saying that these are NOT her clothes, not gifts, and as such she will not be liable for paying taxes on them.It sounds like they’re working REALLY hard to erase any paper trail on this, and hide the total volume of clothes that are actually associated with the story. It’s sounding more and more like a (large)percentage of that $150k may not have been used to buy clothes at all. How much do plumbers cost these days? Somebody call Liddy.

Republicans don’t have a problem with the campaign spending thousands on face paint for Palin, but they’re shitting bricks because Obama didn’t use public transportation to go visit his dying grandmother. That, my friends, is the difference between conservative and liberal values.

I think it’s a matter of DEGREE in the case of both clothes and makeup. Nope, she shouldn’t have to do her own makeup for TV appearances, nor should she necesarily have to dig into her caribou-barbie furry-collared governor’s wardrobe while on the national campaign trail (nor should she buy new clothes at Wal-Mart, where her potential constituents shop.) But these expenses are beyond what any rational middle-class person can imagine or condone. Sarah’s gone Marie Antoinette, and it’s looking more and more like the moderate Repubs are going to go all French Revolution on her ass.

Actually, it’s $36,000 that has been paid – with taxpayer money – to Palin’s makeup person so far. $13,200 for September and $22,800. Outrageous.McCain-Palin are LIARS, HYPOCRITES and FRAUDS.

  • Poleezz

Good point Cactus Gal. It’s okey dokey to spend huge bucks on McFucks high maintance running mate but when Barack goes to see his grandma on her deathbed, all bets off and he’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of line. Fucking fuckwads!

Do you think anyone will ever call out Palin on the faux glasses thing? Looking at the close-ups on HuffPo it’s obvious that the lenses are window glass. These are purely cosmetic, superficial props.

As a friend of mine said to me earlier “I wonder how much Joe Biden spends on his suits…”
