Prime Time Thread

Open thread for documenting the constant variety of cable news hackery.

Tonight! It’s Friday! That means lots of political garbage.

7:12PM
To wit… This discussion on Hardball in which Congresswoman Bachman is going off about who’s American and who’s anti-American is truly frightening. All I could think of was Joe McCarthy’s Un-American Activities Committee. Think Progress is making the same comparison.

This woman on Tweety’s show need to be slapped in the face.

  • LeeroyJenkins

People seriously should start protesting McCain-Palin appearances. They won’t bother coming to my state because I’m one of like seven Democrats, so there’s no way we’re going blue, but this cannot be allowed. This country is better than this kind of camapaigning.

  • kansasdem

I liked Letterman bringing up Gordon Liddy:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV93U115RnMMcCain says something to the effect “I’ve met him”.Understatement of the millennium!

  • Pecos Bill

This is FRIGHTENING!I can NOT stress enough that OBAMA really needs to literally ‘watch his back’!!!VERY SCARY STUFF!

  • ceu

Katrina is FURIOUS. And Buchanan is a total ass.And Cindy Lou’s 2007 tax return was made public today. She paid an effective rate of 26.2%. Obvious, she doesn’t want it to go to 39% under Obama…..

  • JG

It is shocking that the media continues to beat this non-story to death–The right wing could have made up a fictional character Terry Von terrorist, and it would have the same amount of validity as this stupid Ayers non-story. and like I’ve said, the fact that the media beats this to death without mentioning Liddy or AIP makes the story even more ridiculous–this is merely the BBQ media as a propaganda wing of the McCain camp.

  • jane

@McPain on Letterman.McCain says:Ayers, on 9/11/01, said “I wish I’d bombed more.”Survey says:Ayers was quoted in the NYT on 9/11 (printed earlier, I would imagine) saying “I wish we’d done more.”Noone gets called out for this one.

  • Nanotyrannus

Matthews actually looks like he might kick her in her Brown Shirt nuts.I’m so tired of these shitbirds, McCain included, that lob the vague “we shouldn’t trust this guy” attacks but when pressed to speak their mind, they’re cowardly response is “oh YOU guys should look into it. You should investigate further!”I said to friends today that the best way to call people on this kind of bullshit “We need to know more about his relationship blah blah lie fucking lie blah” is to ask “What do you think is there, Senator McCain? We’ve asked BO and he says it’s just an acquaintance. You tell me. What is there to the relationship that the New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, Matt Drudge, CNN, FOXNews, CBS, NBC, ABC, The Clintons (old pros at digging up the dirtiest shit), and Satan’s own personal pile of talking shit Karl Rove, all seemed to have missed? Tell us. You say the country is in danger from this guy. So save us from certain doom and tell us what we have missed. Out with it you doddering old bag of teeth-clenching bitterness. Tell us what we’re going to find that so very dangerous to our democracy.”Nothing? Awesome. Please exit the campaign and relieve us all, once and for all, of the overpowering stench of your unresolved daddy issues. Right. The Fuck. Now.

  • dontpanic23

Thanks for posting that. I was suffering from — hell, something. It made me temporarily (or so) insane.

  • jane

ceu- is that like a capital gains rate? (not that it matters to me,just curious.)

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

How do morons like this get elected?

  • jane

Have yall checked out the Bob swag page?Bob, I want to see more of your graphic ideas. (I’ve seen your animation, now I want to wear it.) Me likey black and L/S. B’way Carl will appreciate black, also.Also. XXXOOO

  • ceu

No, Jane. I don’t know how much of the income is capital gains.I just did a quick and dirty on the reported income of $4.2 million & reported tax paid of $1.1 million. I haven’t checked out the tax return yet and I probably shouldn’t have commented on it at all until I’d done so.

  • jane

I’m prolly wrong, but the way I understood it was if your cap gains were more than your 1040 income, or maybe it was if you had cap gains at all, that was the rate all your income got taxed at.Sorry to end a sentence with ‘at,’ yall.

  • ShelleyBee

I’ve yet to hear what, in particular, those on the right object to about Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers. What does “pallin’ around” even mean? Did they set pipe bombs together? Go out for ice cream? Drown kittens? Ride roller coasters? Do lines? Knock over mailboxes? Shoot at targets named Bill and Hillary? Discuss education? It’s never clear what kind of unseemly activities they are supposed to be involved in together. If the guy is such a walking felony, why have so many people vouched for him?”Pallin’ around” always makes me think of this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tybugI5CkIs

  • roto

Okay, look: even Matthews has reached the end of his tether with this madness: Forget Bachman’s glazed-over jingoism. What finally needs to happen here is simple: McCain’s campaign, including McCain himself, needs to be reported to the Secret Service and the FBI for deliberately inciting violence against a US Senator and Presidential nominee. They should fined a significant amount, forced to make reparations and public apologies, and Steve Schmidt and others should be immediately fired; perhaps even a civil suit needs to be brought against them. It is a crime in this country to threaten or aggravate assault on a public official, which is exactly what these new robocalls are doing. Moreover, they are slanderous under US laws, and could easily be prosecutable in a court of law. How do we get this started, people? Who do we contact?

  • jane

Shelley, I think they think discussing education is a suspect activity.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

McCain just disgusts me. This whole blaming Obama for “invading Joe the plumber’s privacy” is ludicrously over the top. What a douchebag.

  • jane

roto, I say that’ll never be considered kosher this close to an election, and rightly so. Imagine similar but false charges brought up against someone on your side. At least in this case, I think we just need to hold an election.

  • ceu

No, Jane, I don’t think so. I’m not an expert on capital gains and the tax rates, etc. Last time I really looked into it, there were three rates for gains (28, 15, & 5%) and it’s based on the amount of time you held the asset amd if it’s stock or collectibles, etc. Nothing about an other income you might have.

  • jane

ceu, I’m going on my (admittedly dim) reading of instructions and having to fill out a schedule D for years. (Though not anymore!)

  • jane

Seems like, at some point the forms ask if you would have been taxed above 28% on your 1040. If so it probably gets complicated but if not then you pay your 1040 rate for your AGI and the cap gains rate, max 28%, on your cap gains income.Yeah, that’s not complicated. Fuckers.

  • ceu

could be the alternative minimum tax, which I know nothing about. Never had to deal with it. I’ve mostly just dealt with individual returns that are under the amount for AMT (but which do have some capital gains) and business returns (and 990s…that’s my strength)

  • roto

Jane, you may be right, and thanks for noting that; but there are certainly laws on the books regarding slander, defamation of character and libel. What’s more, it’s well known that threatening public officials is an offense virtually guaranteed to get you investigated by the FBI; it easily falls under the lovely Patriot Act’s guidelines of subversive activity. The Secret Service is hired at our expense to protect these guys, and McCain’s tie-in to terrorists, it’s surely understood, has the potential to make an act of violence against Obama almost an inevitability. As Matthews said in this interview, based on the robocalls language, “They should pick this guy [Obama] up.”

  • jane

Anyway ceu, we both know that Cindy would just have an IRS sattelite agency installed on her ranch in Sedona, where she could pre-approve all of her tax forms.Like the cell towers.

  • http://www.twoeightnine.com twoeightnine

Congresswoman Bachmann works in the Capitol Building. Senator Obama and Congresswoman Pelosi also work in the Capitol Building. Therefore one can logically assume that she is also anti-American and a terrorist. She also shares a backwoods neighbor in Wisconsin with Mr. Obama. I bet that’s where they’re training the militia.

  • jane

roto, I think I’m more disturbed by this misuse of Secret Service. And a civil suit, even after the election, would be awesome.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

What the hell is going on with Rachel’s show?! The camera went kerflooee!

  • cminri

@ Carl – I think the camera man slipped on one of Keith’s loogies from last night…

  • ceu

HA! Rachel just said that CongressCritter Bachman’s Democratic opponent has received more than $30K in donations since she appeared on Tweety earlier this evening!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

@ CM – Ewwwww! I would hope they would have cleaned it up by now, unless they leave everything on the floor like his script he throws into the air after the “World’s Best Persons” bit. I’ll have to make a call to the prop man there and make sure he mops! LOL!

  • schadenfroid

I’ve been irate during most of this election, but she took me over the top. Forget her McCarthy era paranoid drivel.Look into those vacant, vapid, dead cult eyes. I read her bio, and it did reinforce by greatest fears.I’m sure among her ilk bomb shelter sales will soar!!!

  • Poleezz

If everyone is guilty by association then this crock of Bach has just basically said that Palin believes in witches and goblins.

  • Poleezz

I’m in McCain country this week. First in AZ now in Mittens country Utah. It’s amazing how many Obama supporters you see!

  • jane

    Good to hear, poleeeeezzzz!

  • The Colonel

You know, I’ve held a private reservation about hitting the 60 vote majority in addition to winning the white house, mainly because I fear it will make Dems an easy target in 2010 if the economy doesn’t pick up right away or – God forbid – another problem arises. But after watching that … F*** ‘em.The Republicans need to lose so badly that they are forced to go back to the drawing board and rethink everything. They need to recognize that the country is tired of the typical scare tactics and empty patriotism.

  • http://livefreeordie08.wordpress.com LiveFreeOrDie08

With a veto-proof majority the Dems will ROCK. 2010 will just mop up the remaining seats. Let’s stop worrying about what they might do and start focusing on what we WILL do.I’m making calls to swing states this weekend. In the awesome words of Sean Connery in The Untouchables, “What are you willing to do?”

  • ch1naski

Send Bachmann back to the private sector:http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/18660 This was at $2.5k when I first saw it on dailykos earlier tonight. Over $80k now. Ouch. Bachmann struck a nerve.

  • dontpanic23

A day late and a dollar short, as usual, but if we didn’t currently have our own cause to donate to and we had gazillions of bucks, we would do well to take this one on too. I watched that exchange and thought Tweety held back, which royally pissed me off, while I was being astounded by that woman’s stupidity and pissed off by her words as well. He could have pinned her to the wall like he sometimes does, and failed. Gave her a fucking break she didn’t deserve. Hardball my ass.Anybody out there who wants to throw some toward Kay Hagan, running against my awful senator Elizabeth Dole, we could use the help down here. The negative ads are disgusting, as usual. And the cows who adore her seem to think she’s some kind of hometown girl because she used her mother’s home here to gain residency (or something like that).

  • dontpanic23

Here you can join almost 4000 others (so far) in asking Congress to censure Bachman. It includes the Hardball videos. Send to everyone who you know.http://www.censurebachmann.com/

  • ceu

Tweety didn’t need to pin her down, DontPanic. He just let her keep talking and she hanged herself with her own words. No way she could claim that he twisted what she said. We got the message without Tweety being loud or obnoxious about it.

  • dontpanic23

Good point, Ceu. I just love it when he slams the morons against the wall. But you’re right, she did it to herself.

  • Pecos Bill

@DPNotice how you NEVER hear or see Dole until senate elections???

  • dontpanic23

She doesn’t want to get sullied by swinging through here–too much like slumming. Six years ago she only came here to prop her mother (maybe strapped to it) in a chair and make a commercial before dashing back to wherever, anywhere but her “home” state. There oughta be a law…

  • NotAPollStat

MSNBC’s top story today (Saturday) is the fact the Obama’s transition team met. The question they’re asking (via Alix Wit-less) is, “Isn’t this presumptuous of Obama?????” Of course, the answer should be “Sounds like planning that BOTH candidates should be taking…”MSNBC’s second top story is that Obama is out-spending McCain in swing states. Kudos to Anne Kornblut (of Wash. Post?) who pointed out that McCain is using the media to get out his message for free. And now Tucker Bounds will get his propoganda turn, without question (10:17 am ET)

  • NotAPollStat

MSNBC — Tucker Bounds unchallenged spew:It’s all about the economy and how Obama is going to ruin small business with his tax plan. How Obama is a liar because he opted out of public financing to “saturate” battleground states with money from big donors and Hollywood, that Obama is lying that contributions come from small donors.Colin Powell may be endorsing McCain. But if he endorses Obama, no big deal.Of course, Alix Witt-less nit-Witt commiserated with McCain’s tough road ahead. Now it’s Pat Buchanan’s turn to spew (10:26 am ET)
