The McCain-Liddy Love Affair

In 1998, Liddy gave a fundraiser in his Scottsdale, Arizona home for McCain’s senatorial re-election campaign — the two posed for photographs together; and as recently as May, 2007, as a presidential candidate, McCain was a guest on Liddy’s syndicated radio show. Inexplicably, McCain heaped praise on his host’s values. During the segment, McCain said he was “proud” of Liddy, and praised Liddy’s “adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.” From the program:

LIDDY: Your experience in the Hanoi Hilton is remarkable. I mean, I put in five years in a prison [for masterminding the Watergate burglary, and associated crimes], but it was here in the United States, and they didn’t torture – the only torture that I had was being forced to listen to rap music from time to time.

McCAIN: Well, you know, I’m proud of you. I’m proud of your family. I’m proud to know your son, Tom, who’s a great and wonderful guy. And it’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon. And congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.

Which of Liddy’s “principles and philosophies” was McCain referring to? Liddy’s advocacy of break-ins? Firebombings? Assassinations? Kidnappings? Taking target practice with figures nicknamed Bill and Hillary?

I once saw G. Gordon Liddy slip on a patch of ice and crack open his hairless skull on the sidewalk. Good times. But that’s neither here nor there. See, there’s a rule in politics (and every other corridor of power). Old white Republican guys get to pal around with whoever the hell they want — with impunity. Should we expect an around the clock cable news vigil in which they play Liddy’s greatest hits on an endless loop? Nope. Will McCain deliver an address repudiating and denouncing Liddy? Of course not. Why? Old white Republican guys.

    Liddy. Jesus. An animal, but that’s one tough old sonuvabitch.Like some kind of rabid badger. Not the sort of thing you want anywhere around, but definitely deserving of a certain degree of respect (at least until it can be properly shot).

    Just saw an interview on CNN with McCain. Dana Bash was basically begging McCain to go after Rev Wright–no mention of Liddy, or Troopergate (although I didn’t catch the beginning).One other thing–CNN is FLOGGING the ACORN story every 5 seconds, and what I noticed is that the reporter, Drew Griffin seems very right-wingy. I say this because his ACORN report seemed almost too one-sided (there’s been other outlets who are fleshing the story out for more dimension and context)–in fact it seems that ACORN actually flags it’s own fraudulent forms, but must BY LAW turn them in–Then I saw the same Drew Griffin talking about the Palin Troopergate story and he gave it the ole “no biggie” treatment.

    It boggles my mind that the right wing is able to get away with the notion that the media is “in the tank” for Obama–and what’s even funnier is the BBQ media actually reinforces that talking point.

    Bash has had her head run over by a train. Can’t you tell? How could a fully functional brain possibly fit in that deformed cranium?Don’t get me started on that fucking ACORN bullshit. The shit is so deep and there isn’t enough time left in the campaign to expose all the falsehoods and attacks them. I wish to GOD the fucking media would spend time doing actual investigative reporting on the smearing of ACORN. A feast of facts, figures, and stories can be linked together like neat little sausages. ACORN is treated like a chained slave and whipped regularly. BTW they are not funded by tax payers. Fucking neocons. So many falsehoods and so little time.
