Wrong!

Nope. Totally wrong. Just like her answer in the debate, as well as this nonsensical gibberish.

The U.S. Constitution says, “The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.” In other words, the vice president does not write, vote upon or sponsor legislation. And this is the flippin’ job she’s running for. Just staggering. (Transcript after the jump.)

Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”PALIN: Aw, that’s something that Piper would ask me, as a second grader, also. That’s a great question, Brandon, and a Vice President has a really great job, because no only are they there to support the President agenda, they’re like a team member, the team mate to that President. But also, they’re in charge of the United States Senate, so if they want to they can really get in there with the Senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom. And it’s a great job and I look forward to having that job.

She’s been saying this since the VP debate. It’s unbelievable.

    Whatever.

So if the POTUS is in charge of the country, could not the argument be made that the president of the senate is “in charge of the United States Senate”?Agreed, that this is not how the office has been traditionally understood. But pretending for a moment that someone were… oh, I don’t know, power hungry and determined to expand the office of VP… couldn’t they make the case that the Constitution allows much greater senatorial control?

Did Cheney already put this through and forget to tell us (and such as)? The week we were all horrified while watching our government’s lack of give-a-shit in New Orleans, maybe?

She said “Aw, that’s something that Piper would ask me, as a second grader…”Didn’t she do an interview before McSame picked her for VP in which she was clueless about what the duties of VP actually were? Maybe she needs to go back to elementary school with Piper.

Is this woman a native English-speaker? Because I don’t understand where she gets her habit of ending random sentences with “also” (… Piper would ask me, as a second grader, also”), never mind the convoluted word order, and the way she uses stock phrases as if her brain had been programmed by language tapes.

I grew up (and still live in – except for a stint working for the State Legislature in Juneau) the little burg of Kenai, Alaska.American Government was a required course when I went to high school. Without passing it, you didn’t get a diploma.I’m not sure what the requirements are in Wasilla, but apparently Sarah missed that class.

This is why they don’t let her speak.

  • Strawdog

Will she need a teleprompter to say, “Go f*ck yourself!” on the Senate floor?

And STILL there’s people who will look you directly in the eye and tell you she’s “ready to lead.”Right. And she’s “one of the nation’s foremost energy experts.”Seriously, I can’t believe McCain is still in this thing. On his own he’s done enough to sink his chances. With her on board and the last few weeks Obama should be over 60%. What the hell is going on out there?

Yeah, she’s a fucking pinhead and she should dig up Spiro Agnew’s corpse and ask it how “policy making” went over in the Senate when he gave that a try. Not so good.Spiro Agnew’s Corpse for Vice President: It Knows More About Governing Than Sarah Palin!

Matthew, it’s a leadership role in title only. Here’s the wikipedia explanation, which is decent:The Vice President of the United States[1] is the first person in the presidential line of succession, becoming the new President of the United States upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president, should he or she accept the position. Every presidential term ends on January 20 of the year immediately after a presidential election. As designated by the Constitution of the United States, the vice president also serves as the President of the Senate, and may break tie votes in that chamber.[2] He or she may be assigned additional duties by the president but, as the Constitution assigns no executive powers to the vice president, in performing such duties he or she acts only as an agent of the president. (emphasis added)Breaking tie votes–that’s it, as Bob aptly pointed out. Cheney was a long-time member of congress and knows how the game is played. Palin? She probably doesn’t even know the length of terms for House and Senate members or how many there are in each body.Scary stupid.

Tweety just asked Pat Buchanan what she meant by that statement.Pat: She’s talking to second graders.Tweety: She’s talking like a second grader. There may be some subjects that are arguably worth tiptoeing around in front of youngsters, but the role of the vice president is not one of them. Yes, the VP breaks ties in the senate, but what may be the second most difficult and important (though not inherently powerful) job in the world could not be more simply put than what Colin Powell articulated Sunday: “The job of the vice president is to be ready to be president.”
