Bring Out The Crazy

The volume of crazy e-mails I’ve been receiving has increased significantly in the last three days. The messages either accuse Senator Obama of being a terrorist sleeper agent, or they claim that he’s going to retaliate against all white people. And every single e-mail has accused me of being un-American for supporting such a candidate.

Like I wrote in my Huffington Post column this week, the Neo-McCarthyism and Neo-Southern Strategy are the only tactics that appear to be working for McCain and Palin. And if they end up winning, it’ll be heralded as a victory for these tactics.

CORRECTION: Wingnut e-mailer Joe Krasck just reminded me that he, in fact, didn’t call me un-American in his particular wingnut e-mail. He’s right. Joe Krasck called me a “gigantic asshole” and a “flamer.”

I was enormously heartened on Friday as I trick-or-treated with my daughter in our small, almost entirely white rural midwestern town. We came to the house of some friends of ours that are deeply religious, deeply Republican and — if the e-mails my wife receives from them are any indication — the sort of anti-Obama church-basement-virus sufferers that have been clogging your inbox of late. Knowing how much they hate and fear Senator Obama, I haven’t broached the subject of the election with them since the primaries. But Halloween night I went as An Obama Supporter, and tried to engage them in a conversation. It was quickly quashed, as I was sure it would be, but one heartening detail arose: They’re not going to vote. The husband literally said, “What’s the point?” They’re sure Obama is going to win, and they’re disgusted enough not to turn out at all. To my amazement I actually heard myself say, “Oh, you’ve got to vote!” simply because I’m such a deep believer in the due process of democracy. But they’re not going to vote. And I think we’re going to see a lot of that on Tuesday.Never forget, for these next excruciating 72 hours, that those of us voting for our candidate and his platform are more powerful by an order of magnitude than those that are voting simply to vote against him.

Elvis, you don’t know how right you are. When I was earning my PoliSci degree I was shocked to learn how much of politics is about mobilizing your support. A candidate is far better off in a district with a few hundred fanatics rather than thousands of party members — and I’ve never seen a ground game like Obama’s. It’s breathtaking.

This Obama anti-american, terrorist crap is not going to die down after Tuesday if he pulls this off; it’s going to get worse. It’s going to go underground. That scares me more than what’s going on now. It’s the haters you don’t see that galvanize themselves for an attack.I hope the Secret Service doubles down on Obama. It’s going to get uglier.

Only a skosh OT:Yeah, I know that Alaska will go red on Nov. 4th, after LBJ in 1964, our 3 measly Electoral votes have always gone to Repub presidential candidates. But still, this was kinda uplifting:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lffB7B8jKEOn a happy note, it’s looking more and more like after Nov. 4, the US Senate will be rid of “Tubes” Ted Stevens, and the US House won’t have “I’ll bite you like a mink” Don Young to put up with anymore.

Can we maybe come up with a catchy name for these jerks? I mean, the right is great at coming up with empty catch phrases that stick to people- tax and spend liberal, the blame America first crowd. I’m thinking the Flag Pin First crowd. Heh? HEH?

    “Cut taxes and spend conservatives?”

@Elvis! Keep surveillance on them. If it turns out they don’t vote and my state goes for Obama, let me know and I’ll be able to look my deadbeat kid who isn’t voting in the eye (without 4 years of Mom’s Stink-Eye–you’re a parent, you know the look). His one non-vote will have been offset by 2 non-voting the other direction. But only if Obama takes NC.
