Look! A Progressive!

Did you notice the president-elect’s new head of the Domestic Policy Council? The woman standing next to Larry Summers was Melody Barnes and she’s a proud progressive. Not sure if Summers questioned her ability to do math, but she’ll be in a very important position inside the Obama White House. The DPC is described like so:

The Domestic Policy Council coordinates the domestic policy-making process in the White House and offers policy advice to the President. The DPC also works to ensure that domestic policy initiatives are coordinated and consistent throughout federal agencies. Finally, the DPC monitors the implementation of domestic policy, and represents the President’s priorities to other branches of government. [...]

Under President Bush, the Domestic Policy Council oversees major domestic policy areas such as education, health, housing, welfare, justice, federalism, transportation, environment, labor and veteran’s affairs.

And a progressive will be doing this. This is huge.

So is Stranahan for or against this?

I keep checking another site to see when they’re going to celebrate this news (I posted it there about 3 hours ago). So far nothing, but the beginnings of the negative spin – apparently she’s not progressive ENOUGH, so a think tank labelling her progressive doesn’t count. So there! We can all go back to stomping our feet and wondering when Obama’s going to have some REAL progressives. (Bob – when you get the new software, we want smilies. Smilies are very important. I very much wanted to post a sarcastic smilie or a rolling eyes smilie.)As to Lee, I’ll wait for him to chime in – and I’ll hope that Travis is pleasantly surprised to discover that Lee, like me, is thrilled to see diverse voices in the Obama administration.QT

I dunno, we don’t want decisions through the dreaded ideological filter now, do we?

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Nope. We don’t. So we want competent people with a variety of opinions, and a thinking president who can assess the various opinions and come up with a strategy forward.Which, btw, is what we were promised. Nice to feel like a president is actually planning on fulfilling promises.QT

Old news, Travis. Change.gov was scrubbed of partisan rhetoric in favor of agenda policy worded so as to not be offputting to others. Campaign is over – time to try to govern and unite the country and all that.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/18/changegov-returns-without_n_144698.htmlQT

“Also now gone are pages outlining how the new administration plans to revitalize the economy, end the war in Iraq and provide healthcare to all.”Is it really all that partisan to do, you know, good things for the country?

@TravisWhat is it you want? More ideology? Less? You’re just being a contrarian, as near as I can tell. You’ll be a much happier guy if you let the man govern a little first. Look for the broader narrative.

More ideology would be awesome. Pretending that somehow pursuing progressive policy is an act of divisiveness is more of that Very Serious thinking you’re always (rightly) on about.

Woo hoo for Melody Barnes! But slightly OT, did y’all see the pic on the front page of the HuffPo this afternoon? Larry Summers looks like he’s been vacationing in a cave – very scary pic.
