Moving Forward

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking in terms of the direction of this blog now that the election is over and I’ve reached some conclusions that I’d like to pass along.

The GDAB “beat” has always been presidential politics and the media, with occasional mentions of other issue areas (the wars, terrorism/fear, climate crisis, the economy, civil rights, civil liberties, pop culture). Naturally, this will all remain the same. The beat won’t change other than the fact that the 2008 election is over. [More after the jump...]

In terms of covering the Obama administration, naturally I have a great fondness for our next president, and to hide or temper that would be ridiculous. This is an opinion blog, after all. Now, I don’t intend to cheerlead or hero worship but I do intend to defend this president as long as he’s on the right track. I also intend to cover the White House in a way that reflects my interest in presidential history and White House lore.Simultaneously, if President Obama does something I don’t particularly dig, I intend to blog about it. Not holding him fairly accountable goes against much of what we’ve talked about for the last eight years. He’s going to screw up, and we can’t ignore it.Other times, the administration might do something that seems like a big mistake, but which might have strategic importance in a broader sense. I’ll do my best to present my criticism from that perspective: what larger goal is the president trying to accomplish by doing this or that? What’s the significance of this decision and what can be gained in the long run? Or did he simply screw the pooch on this one? If so, how?And then there are the enemies. I’ve been hearing some concern-troll warnings that when Barack Obama wins — oh noes! Liberal bloggers won’t have anything to talk about! To which I reply: are you insane? I don’t need to remind you that there’s still, you know, a rather large number of far-right members of the Republican Party who haven’t been ejector-seated off the planet as far as I know. There’s also far-right talk radio, FOX News Channel, our favorite Morning Joe program, and more than a few strategists, authors, columnists, reporters and surrogates who will continue to populate cable news. Nothing to talk about? Don’t make me laugh. Ha. Ha.So, don’t nobody move. More awesome on the way!And finally, I’d love to hear your suggestions and thoughts on moving forward. Comment below…ADDING… Almost forgot. One of the missions of this blog is to pass along some good counter-arguments which can be used at the dinner table or at work in order to, as Thom Hartmann calls it, “win the water-cooler wars.”

I’d like to hear more about the ejector seats. They would make fantastic holiday gifts to the remaining Repubs. From what I hear you can just charge them to your personal CC and get reimbursed from the RNC. Just write “clothes” on the receipt.

just speak your truth Bob. I have a blog and its theme is sex work since well thats my life but over the last couple of months i haven’t been able to keep politics out of my blog because thats what’s been going in in my life. I was just speaking my truth. Some of my die hard readers maybe don’t get that but thats okay, i can deal with that. I’ve gained other readers who see me as a more well rounded person.so the bottom line is just be true to your own thoughts and feelings and everything else will fall into line.i really like your blog, your point of view, humor, your blog contributors and panache.. keep up the good work and keep fighting the good fight.

I discovered this blog a few months ago, and commented a few times. This really ***IS*** a goddam awesome blog.I think you’re right that not all the conservatroids’ heads have exploded. What we need to do is prevent the Obama administration to get bogged down in defense the way the Clinton White House was. The left blogosphere needs to lob some of those grenades and provide cover fire, shooting down right-wing talking points before they have a chance to infect the media.

  • Jenny Chin

Bob, the horrific yet satisfying sounds of conservative heads exploding has been my entertainment for the past two days. If I really want entertainment, I go back and read the live blogs of conservatives on election night. Talk about a high!I understand what you are saying. I’m so excited about the rejection of conservatism. I’m giving myself gloat time. It’s been 8 years, we deserve it.

I just love that you made Ejector Seat into a verb. That’s Goddamn Awesome.I’m excited to hear that GDAB will soldier on with due respect to “presidential history and White House lore,” which are two of my favorite subjects as well. I can think of few more noble pursuits in the BlogOsphere than covering modern political news with a deep and abiding respect for all that has gone before it, using history — and perhaps a little humor — to paint a bigger picture. I was drawn to this site months ago by its erudition, its intelligent and respectful commentators, and the generosity of spirit obvious in its host; I hope I am inivted to stick around as an occasional voice for — and less often, one hopes, against — the Obama Administration.Be sure to run a full database back-up of GDAB as soon as you can, Mr. The Bob Cesca. That all of us here gathered will have a running, day-by-day, hour-by-hour chronicle of our hopes and fears, our laughter and tears, our victories and defeats throughout this long and tortuous election is a unique and lasting gift for which we cannot thank you enough.

  • Tbest609

Bob,I like the direction you are describing. We also should keep people posted on things they can do to help the administration. If there are ways we can voice our opinion for things we believe in we can use this blog to share with each other on how to get involved. I am probably like a lot of people who feel like they want to do something, but do not always know how to get involved. There are also going to be many more elections with significant importance. I feel it is still very important to get the 60 seat Senate and when the next round of elections come up we can use this site to help fill those seats with Dem’s, Ind., 3rd party, (basically non- republicans). There is still a ton of work to do. And as you like to say… Go!

  • dontpanic23

What Jenny said. I came here partly because I find your point of view a leveling one for me when I find myself frothing at the mouth over something. Other times I come here and begin to froth at the mouth because I missed something of importance until you said it. But mainly I hang around because I agree with most of what you say and I like the sense of humor with which you present it, when appropriate, so there. And don’t stop putting up good music videos.Carry on, I’m usually reading.

  • cactusgal

Bob,I trust that you will respect my confidentiality in terms of any other information you may have acquired while reading my mind about GDAB.CactusgalPS That image you stumbled on with me doing something to Cheney that was painful and of a sexual nature…? Haha–just jerkin’ your chain, Karnak.

  • cminri

Bob – Ive been here since about March or April and have really enjoyed how much your blog has grown and flourished in thattime. You have really drawn quite a collection of characters to say the least! I’d been interested to hear your reaction to the community that has evolved here. Is it what you had envisioned?

  • FrictionSoul

I want what JennyDemillo has: sex work. I have lots of work and not surprisingly it’s nowhere near as beneficial.GDAB BLog: just keep doing what you’ve been doing. Our work is only begun. I think you’ve done an excellent job of building a sense of community here that I personally will be recreating locally [JennyD: you don't live in the Denver area, do you? ;-) ]. In fact, I already have. Most of my mom and dad friends are too busy to communicate, so I always keep them clued in to the GDAB.I like the hate email you periodically post. I’m glad I don’t have to read that shit because its prevalent; thanks for removing them. Fear dominates and probably will for sometime because the fact of the matter is this: the right wing nuts are sharpening their ravenous knives this very moment. Their hunger for the destruction of America will never be slaked.Every move Obama makes will be ridiculed. I’m okay with the people who do that because at least they are waving a big sign reading “Eject me now!”

I haven’t posted many times, but I checked in here pretty much every day during the lead-up to the election, and without Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and GDAB I probably would have stayed far less mentally intact than I did. (Which may not be saying much; I’m a poor judge of that.)One thing I appreciate about the community here is the geographic diversity, and given that this election transformed me into a total politics nerd, I’m going to still be interested in what’s happening in other parts of the country, especially the stories that don’t make national news. Also, what will people be doing to advance democratic causes in their own corners of the country, in the coming months and years? Those kinds of things.Mostly, it’s a relief to have a place where people can cybershout, “I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN” and all mean it for the same reasons.Plus, Bob, your You Tube links have become required viewing in my house. Mornings wouldn’t be nearly as awesome without them.

On the subject of passing things along, Im fairly certain atleast one writer for Countdown reads here. Unless its just a coincidence that certain things here have been repeated verbatum on Countdown.Generally your ideas for moving forward are what I would expect, and I’ll for one be sticking around.

  • Tbest609

anemone17,Was the double post intended to make up for your admission in the first line that you haven’t posted very often? Just playing around with you. Keep posting, i love reading the opinions of so many people.

Bob, Loved your blog during the darkness, sure we can enjoy it in the light as well! In response, here is a letter I sent to my representatives that shows where, I believe, we need to head. You can find it on my blog as well:An Open Letter To Our LeadersNote: Please feel free to copy this letter and forward it to your representatives. We must speak the truth to power, even if we are in support of that power. Now that the biggest election in our lifetime is concluded, I want to issue an urgent request. An untold amount of damage has been, as is being, done to our Constitution and our government by the Bush Administration. The majority of the change that I believe President-Elect Obama is calling for needs to come from you, our representatives. I will preface this with saying that I am in complete support of President-Elect Obama and have been volunteering my efforts for his campaign since the beginning of the primaries. I believe in his ability to govern and his ideas and vision for our country.I believe that our first priority is a return of all Constitutionally-appointed powers to all branches of government. Power needs to be taken back from the Executive Branch and returned to its rightful place within the Legislative and Judicial Branches of government. The partisan rancor that was the hallmark of the Bush Administration must stop. We must have the checks and balances, brilliantly developed by the Framers, in order to back away from the current movement towards tyranny and despotism.I urge you to work with the Obama Administration in the interests of your constituents and your country, without bitter partisanship and with hope for the future. I also urge you to never again sign over your Congressional powers to the Executive Branch. Please represent our desire to return this country to its basic values and once again live out the creed of “a government for, of and by the people.”

  • dontpanic23

And I agree with anemone and I agree with anemone :-) regarding the geographic diversity here. And I’ve always wanted to be around a group of people who speak in as snarky a terms as I think to myself (and in the case of Jane, Elvis, and others, a lot more snarky). (Jane is the QUEEN of snark)I also agree with Ashby that someone from Countdown monitors the blog entries here as well as the comments. So…ya think KO’s one of us? And which one of us is he? Cousin Avi says he’s a Canadian living in Taiwan, but how do we know that? I’m suspicious of all of you now.

  • anemone17

tbest609, nope, the double post was only evidence that I don’t post here very often and therefore don’t know how to do it very well. (My computer looks like it’s ignoring the ‘post’ command the first time I press it. (I hope it doesn’t happen again this time. I’m not usually the duplicitous type.)That said, shouting “I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!” twice in one day (well, three times, now) is a good reflection of how I’m feeling this morning. Oh, what the hell–I’ll spring for number four. “I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!”Thanks, you guys.

Add me to the list of those Americans who have had it up to here with the divisive, illegal, dangerous behavior of the Current Resident and his evil minions. And who are sick to death of having our lunch money stolen before being shoved into our locker. The GOP remind me of nothing more than a bunch of playground bullies who never had any friends in 7th grade and are now taking it out on ‘the popular kids.’ This has to stop. And don’t think for a minute that just because we have a sane, reasonable POTUS in office there is any letup in the need for vigilance over the right-wing nutjobs. In fact, a Democratic administration is what fuels their hate and grows their numbers.Keep up the good work and thank you for your valuable insight.

  • pettygirl

This blog and readership is GODDAMN AWESOME, Bob. Long may it continue!

  • KatinWilm

I second, third, fourth and fifth all the above sentiments. I fucking love this place.

I promised my kids I’d stop watching so much news now that the election is over. I never said anything about cutting back on my GDAB addiction though! Ha HA!!My two cents on the GDAB future is that we should do our best to make it a hopeful atmosphere, and make efforts to grow the neighborhood to include some of the rather dismayed Republicans that don’t quite know what to do with themselves now that they lack a shepherd to lead them.We don’t need to pay any attention (literally, ANY attention) to the doom & gloomers for at least 3 years. We need to speak with our actions. And we should journal those efforts here. Perhaps when we set off across the country and the world to make a difference we may even go so far as to brand ourselves as members of “Bob Cesca’s Goddamn Awesome Corp”Much to do. Who’s got the list?

  • bjritz

Cubicle Cannon Laughter! That’s why I’ve enjoyed this blog so much. I’m working away in my cube and then I jumpypants my way over here and then the next thing is a large volley of laughter shoots out!I know that many of my co-workers know that I’m laughing at what they have been trying to fearmongerly justify. They retreat to speak in hushed tones about their one. One guy even was on the phone saying “Whatdaya know Joe…” to some poor schmuck on the other side.I don’t post much but I am a republican who has been converted to support Obama. I’m going to drift out and re-register as an Independent soon. This blog is a bright spot for me and I’ll grow snarkier as time passes.I’m sure there will be a ton to post here about the progression of life in the real “Real America” and many laughs to go with it.

  • http://livefreeordie08.wordpress.com LiveFreeOrDie08

    Goddamn Awesome CORPS! damn spellchek!

  • NorCalNative

Bob, I became a big fan of this blog because of your anger over what the Bush Administration was and is doing to the Constitution. I love the way you drive verbal stakes through the “fair and balanced” crowd and their blathering. Thanks for introducing me to Glen Greenwald and the Drunk Cyclist!

  • jane

DP, your check’s in the mail. That sounded almost believable.I’ve been thinking (and I see possible like minds here) it’s about goddamn time I have some energy to devote to paying attention to more state and local issues. I’d love to continue to hear likewise from people around the country (and world).I see some crossover issues from local/state to national- apparently our AG wanted to implement more surveillance? I’ve had it with the rise of the Police State. And I’ve enjoyed hearing about some of the tools in congress and Senate this election season, even if they weren’t my tools.

  • Teaflax

I’ve been a Cesca fan from long before it was the hip thing (from back when he did the cover for what will probably be the last really good Yes album). I’m glad to see him soldiering on into the future and just want to apologize for not having dared hope as much as he has. I was wrong and he was right.

  • dontpanic23

I agree with Jane Johnson on agreeing with Howard Johnson on less police state. (and WTF is this about NC’s AG wanting more surveillance–is this recent?)Yes album cover? Seriously? I still have some of those but my eyes have gotten too old to read the fine print. Bob? This for real (before I strain my bifocals to the limit)? I used to doodle the Yes logo (among others) when I was supposed to be taking notes sometimes in HS. Teaflax, you’re yanking my chain, right?

  • Poleezz

I’ll try to keep this short. First thanks Bob for giving us a place to speak with our real voices. If we want our democracy to succeed it is going to be necessary to participate. This requires more than sitting here nightly blogging. It requires ACTION. We can have forums all day and all night about issues and how we feel. Our elections are being lost at the polls. The enemies have encamped themselves there and it’s mostly because people don’t get involved. There were NO DEMOCRATS at the poll I volunteered to work at through the Obama campaign. Only Republicans pretending to be Democrats were present. It’s a SHAM FOLKS! The Obama campaign was hip to this and targeted areas where the trouble spots were. If you live in a red state, like many of us do, start working in your polls. They will fight you so don’t expect to be welcomed when you walk in. We must take back the country and it starts at the grassroots level. Your home town is where it’s at. LISTEN FOLKS, the enemy is in our own fucking camp. That is where we are losing this fight. The idiots are working at your polls and they have a party there every single election. TAKE IT BACK! So Bob I hope you are reading these and I hope all my blog friends are too. YES WE DID!! At least this time we did. That’s what I would like to talk about. Getting organized and how to keep on winning.

  • Teaflax

Nope, dontpanic23, I am 100% completely serious. Our fine host here designed -in association with one JOn Anderson – the cover for the only Yes album since 1980 that’s more than middling; Magnification. He also kindly donated a rejected CGI image from that job (or if maybe it was for the live box set) to use on the cover of alt.music.yes’s fan album Cyberian Khatru. That cover used my a.m.y faux-Yes logo over his image, so I feel very proud in having a small, if tenuous link to Mr Cesca.

  • Teaflax

And I found that last cover online:http://www.amycd.com/images/ck_cover.jpg

  • Gina

Hey Bob, I don’t comment alot, but I do read often. I really liked the last part you wrote about effective counter arguments. I have used a lot of your arguments to win a few “water cooler wars” myself.
