No!

One more time. America is not a “right of center nation.” Sorry, very serious cable people. First, there’s, you know, the results of the election. An electoral mandate for the so-called “most liberal member of the Senate” (not true, but whatever) and significant pickups in the House and Senate. And then there are the issues. According to Gallup:

• Americans are pro-choice (67 percent)
• Americans support the Geneva Conventions with regards to torture (57 percent)
• Americans don’t want the government snooping in their bank and internet records (67 percent)
• Americans want the USA Patriot Act changed or eliminated entirely (81 percent)
• Americans support protecting the environment at the expense of economic growth (55 percent)
• Americans believe that global warming is happening (86 percent)
• Americans believe that it’s the government’s responsibility to provide health care (69 percent)
• Americans support the decriminalization of marijuana (55 percent) and support the legalization of medical marijuana (78 percent)
• Americans are opposed to attacking Iran (68 percent, according to a CNN Poll)
• Americans support labor unions (60 percent)
• Americans want government funding of embryonic stem cell research (56 percent)
• Americans believe that free trade hurts American workers (65 percent)
• Americans believe rich people and corporations aren’t paying enough taxes (66 and 71 percent respectively)
• And overall party affiliation? 54 percent of Americans are Democrats (with leaners) and 39 percent are Republicans (with leaners).

Like facts are going to stop them from spewing their nonsense?

  • El Mystico

See the moral majority is a majority of moral people. Democrats are godless sodomites so their opinions shouldn’t count, but especially their votes shouldn’t count. Oh and screw facts.

Thanks Bob–we need to keep pounding away at this to defeat this zombie narratives. One other thing–The popular vote has gone to the Dems in 4 out of the last 5 elections. 2 of the last 3.

Scarborough et al was having a fine time this a.m. giving Obama advice on how to govern. He’ll need to move to the right, he’ll need to modify some of his policies (healthcare, economic stimulus, etc) in order to get bipartisanship, on and on – peppered with examples of what Joe did while he was in Congress and what St Ron did as president. Why is it that they don’t understand that Obama was elected BECAUSE of his policies and not in spite of them?

I’m so looking forward to finally being able to do the “right” thing (which is the Left thing)and seeing the cold sweat and fidgeting from the Righties when they are powerless to stop it.The Right now gets to learn what it’s like to be on the other side of the tolerance equation! If they want to be tolerated they’re going to need to learn to modify their positions and be willing to accept a bit less. How’s it feel, bitches??!

Scarborough: “So, President-elect Obama, remember that you have to be a President to all the people, not just those who voted for you. So you have to be to the right of center on Pro-Choice, Unions, terrorism, health care, etc. But whatever you do, do not, DO NOT, EVER get caught with a dead woman in your office.”

Sorry, but the perceived center in the US – even among liberals of various stripes – is far, far to the right when compared to any other Western nation. That’s why so many people can fall for the idea that Obama is a Socialist when he would probably be a moderate right-wing politician anywhere in Europe.I’m hoping an Obama administration pulls that center back to a more realistic position, though.

Bob,I’d love to see you do a commentary regarding Republican’s “once again finding their base”. Or however the various douchebags like to put it!I tend to think the Republican party is divided into three branches (certainly they overlap):(1)The fiscal conservatives. There are still a few out there. These are the folks that truly believe the federal government should be very, very small – basically provide for nothing but the nations defense. Bob Barr comes to mind!(2)The social conservatives! For fuck sake the term conservative should not even apply here! These are the folks that want to dictate everything we do in our lives! There’s nothing “conservative” about these assholes! They’re authoritian!(3)The religious right! They love authoritarianism! As long as they’re the ones that get control things = what we do, what we think, who we worship, etc. They could give a shit less about constitutional law, their law is based purely on their interpretation of the bible! So you have three factions within the Republican party that easily overlap, and also easily disagree! Faction #1 loved McCain! Faction #2 was “luke warm” about McCain! Faction #3 loved Palin! The Republican Party is a cabal of Neanderthals, talibangicals, and authoritarians! Which is why the racists and homophobes so easily gravitate to the Republican party! The Republican Party is the party of hate!

For election day my long-time neighbor had a hand-painted sign on his garage door that said “McCain = Liberty” (in blue poster paint) “Obama = Socialist” (in red poster paint). On Wednesday morning I noticed he took down the McCain half, but left the Obama half prominently installed.By the way, for added effect, he painted a hammer and sickle symbol in the “C” in Socialist.I wonder if he even knows what the word ‘Socialist’ means and why the hammer and sickle have nothing to do with that word. Kind of sad.
