Oh boy, oh boy!

Drama!

Team Obama, after all but offering SecState to Senator Clinton, is expressing EXASPERATION with the Clinton camp for the difficulty in getting a clean vet on President Bill Clinton’s many entanglements.

Entanglements! Bill Clinton! And look — more drama!

…a Democratic source tells me that Clinton herself is conflicted about taking the job.

I’m not sure I’m buying any of this. Suddenly there are all kinds of leaks out of Team Obama?

It doesn’t make sense – they kept such a tight lid on things right up to the election and THEN things start leaking? Ummmm…no. I’m sure there were many juicier items that could have come out during the primaries. And, once again, it’s all about the Clintons.

I feel like it’s a little strange that everyone thinks he “all but offered” the job to Hillary after one meeting. If that were true why meet with Bill Richardson on the same day? Plus Obama doesn’t tend to act hastily, at least not that we’ve seen. Alright, what the heck, you wanna be secretary of state? seems a little hasty to me. I think it’s all just fodder for the news-n-blog-o-tubes.

This is why this is a huge mistake–no matter how tight the vetting is, the media will find something to focus on, and cover wall to wall. Big distraction. Big mistake.–and that’s not even taking into consideration that every syllable uttered by Bill, every move, every “association,” will be gone over ad nauseum, and wall to wall.

This appointment makes not sense to me whatsoever. I don’t see the overwhelming qualifications that Clinton has vs. others. Nor do I see any upside for this from Obama other than to bring her into the fold so she’s pissing out of the tent, to quote LBJ.My sense is that this is more Clinton driven PR than Obama. She’s stuck in the Senate if Reid’s not budging and Kennedy’s got healthcare. She needs a prestigious out, and this is it. I believe Obama’s team is considering her…they have to even if they had not intention of offering. To not vet her would incur the wrath of her supporters for not rewarding her loyalty in the general. My best guess in all of this is that it’s Bill’s doing, and this was payback for his support. HE wants Hillary in the position…mostly to get her the hell out of town so he can get back to gettin’! It’s been a loooooong campaign season for Bill.

Obama probably HAD to offer it to her for Bill’s support, knowing full well that Hillary would not sustain any vetting process because of Bill Clinton. She will him and haw, then turn the job down (here’s hoping she can cut a good deal for herself in the Senate), thus clearing the way for Bill Richardson.I hope.

I think he probably felt a “party unity” need to offer Hillary something.Leaking it this way seems like it might be a smart idea. If it’s known that he offered it to her and she turned it down, it’s her doing not his.If he just went ahead and announced Richardson in the post, Obama might have looked like he was slighting Hillary.I think Richardson is the much beter person for the slot, though. I don’t think SecState is a position to play politics with.

and here’s is the big problem–if it doesn’t happen, it will open the door for the BBQ media to sensationalize the Clinton-Obama “Feud” for 4 years.

  • PackyJ

JG – Frankly, I don’t give a shit what the BBQ media says.I believe Bill Richardson is a far better choice for America.

You’re REALLY surprised the Clinton camp is causing drama? Really?

MatthewN: Good to see you!Well – again, Rahm started the drama-fest, whining in the media about whether or not he should take the chief of staff role. I think it’s safe to say that the No Drama mantra just flew out the window. Washington works on buzz, and Obama brought Rahm onboard at least partially to be sure that he had a player that knows the Washington game. So I’d have to say – who gains from the way this is being reported? Who loses? Then we can follow the cookie crumb trail to the leaks.Well, but I do have to admit that I was wrong – I said there’d be no drama, and there is.QT

This isn’t Obama drama — it’s all press and right-wing b.s.Remember after the primaries, all the talk was about how Hillary HAD to be the V.P. pick (to pick up her supporters, party unity, etc. etc.) Then Biden was picked, and so all the talk was what a mistake this was, when Hillary was supposedly more qualified for the V.P. job. Lots of talk about Obama’s big mistake. Here we are again. Supposed “leaks” and Hillary. How if Obama doesn’t pick Hillary NOW, after all this talk about her, he will have egg on his face. How Obama is no longer disciplined because of the many “leaks” occurring post-campaign.Gimme a break. SENATOR Obama is now PRESIDENT-ELECT Obama for a reason. Why are we listening to the media and the pundits now?

One thing getting lost in the drama is the upcoming Lieberman vote. Isn’t that tomorrow?QT

Obama should just appoint Bill as ambassador to the UN and keep him the hell out of DC.

  • ceu

Bill for Secretary General of the UN. :)

I’m waiting for Bill’s appointment to the supreme court. That’s right I’m calling it.

I want to go along with Hitchens. I haven’t forgiven Clinton for the primary campaign she ran…but I am also quite certain that, once again, Obama is just smarter than we are. When Barack Obama talks about building bridges, people tend to forget that bridges operate in both directions and not necessarily at the same time. They are commonly seen as a structure upon which folks from opposite sides might meet in the middle. It is worthwhile to note that they can be used to invite someone over. They can also be used to send someone away (rather than simply tossing them in the river). The more I watch this guy, the less I want to play poker with him.Hitchens, on the other hand…that guy I’d bust up all night.http://cousinavi.wordpress.com/2008/11/18/hillary-sec-state/@Jenny: BILL’S appointment to the Supremes? Not sure whether you mean Clinton or Richardson…or even that playdoh dude from the old SNL shows…but I’ll give you similar odds on any of those three ever sitting on the USSC.
