Politics of Stupid – Part II

Just like Senator McCain, Joe Scarborough doesn’t know what “vindicate” means either. Yep, the “vindicated” thing was literally 90 percent of Morning Joe today.

Senator Obama was saying: Yes! He has huge faith in the American people, and Iowa made him feel like his faith was justified — reinforced — substantiated — defended. In religious terms, it was like saying, “I looked at that beautiful flower and it vindicated my faith in God.”

Scarborough also said that he’s never heard anything like this statement before. Let’s remind him:

“Your faith in freedom’s ultimate triumph was vindicated when the Berlin Wall was toppled, when an evil empire vanished from the face of the earth.” –Dick Cheney to the Heritage Foundation, 5/1/03. You mean it required the toppling of the Berlin Wall for the far-right conservatives at Heritage to believe in freedom? Crazy!

“We’ve borne these responsibilities before, and we have seen our faith in freedom vindicated by history.” –President Bush on fighting terrorism, 9/29/06. So Bush needs proof of his faith in freedom? Is he not proud of freedom? Traitor!

“We must reaffirm our faith in the principles that our founders declared to be universal, that all people are created equal and possess inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We fought a Revolution, a Civil War, two world wars, and a cold war to vindicate these principles…” –Senator John McCain, 5/1/07. McCain needed his faith in these prinicples reaffirmed?? He needed the cold war to prove something to him about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?! Wow, he’s unpatriotic!

Of course I’m screaming at a big stinking pile of stupid here, and irrespective of any laundry list of explanations, the Republicans are drowning in desperation right now and will latch onto any disingenuous bullshit that floats by.

Bob – I dont know know how you can still watch Morning Schmoe. I lost the ability to do so last summer during his love affair with Hillary. Why dont you email your comments above to them. Maybe they dont know about “the Google” over there. I know it probably wouldnt do any good, because it doesnt agree with their talking points for today -but I would love for them to finally grasp what the hell he was saying. Do you think they honestly misunderstand what he meant, or do you think they are just stirring up the pot? I think I know the answer.

I hated that time too, Cminri, but I keep watching because I hate the fluff format of the other channels. This year I pretty much only want to hear politics but not from the enemy. The networks and CNN have the entertainment and other crap mixed with new, politics and other various shit. I like to cut to the chase, even if it means windbags like Joe and Pat screaming at me. Eugene Robinson is often on and is a breath of fresh air, plus others who make it worth watching. And Bob, we’ve left silly season and entered stupid season, more so than any time I can remember. They are so desperate they will say or do anything, which makes me really nervous right now.

Like cminri I can’t watch him either. I appreciate the guts of steel it takes to watch though and I certainly appreciate the updates on his stupidity. The Scar is a bully. I can’t take him asking a question and then not letting the person answer. He’s one of those guys that thinks if he talks louder than you, HE WINS! He’s exactly like my neocon son-in-law. I long for a day when there is news worth watching in the morning. Only then will the coffee be “joe” once more and I will be fully vindicated.

Bob, this election is long past the point where rational, thinking, intelligent people will be swayed by stupidity. The Gumps and Cleti that have been Gee-Whizzed by Sarah Palin are already on that side of the fence, and this will be one more pathetic talking point they can mumble under their breaths at one another down at Fatback’s Ribs-’N-Racism on Wednesday morning. “Mumble-mumble-WILLIAMAYERSpassthespicysauce-mumble-mumble-LAPELPINwheresmycornbread-mumble-mumble-HASNOFAITHjesusgrannywasthatyou??”Momentum like this won’t be derailed by plays into the mass of Stupid. That bus has left the depot and will soon be a stripped-down smoldering hulk on the shoulder of an 8-lane highway of Smart.

And only slightly offtopic, here is a Maureen Dowd piece that isn’t as venomous as usual but damn sure hits the target on McCain:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/02/opinion/02dowd.html?_r=1&ei=5070&emc=eta1&oref=slogin

I would like Morning Jackass to know that he is totally irrelevant. I bet that would be very damaging to his ego to know that no one cares what he thinks.

Sorry to be a link-lily, but here’s another good NYT op-ed:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/02/opinion/02rich.html?ei=5070&emc=eta1

C-Span Wash. Journal is a good alternative to Morning Jackass. But MJ does have good guests if one can stomach Scarborough and Buchannan.I do think he treats morning Mika like a dog. But she puts up with it.

  • Poleezz

A “link-lily” he he he! That is an insightful article DP.

  • KatinWilm

I love the smell of desperation in the morning! At this point, I think the only people who might actually buy this line of shit are the gomers who have been dazzled by Palin’s legs and are going to vote for them anyways. And in keeping with the link-lily theme (DP!), have y’all seen the new Obama ad where he goes after the Cheney endorsement? I’m glad they did one:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/02/cheney-stars-in-new-obama_n_140105.html

I can’t wait for Wed. when we no longer have to see winkin’ and blinkin’ anymore. Hopefully they just. drop. out. of. sight.Good riddance. McShame needs to retire and just go away and the blithering idiot needs to slink on back to Alaska. Although I do feel sorry for Alaskans who are still stuck with the whack job.

I don’t think it any of it’s going to work for them this time because the country’s general mood is just so strongly against the continuation of Republican governance. Still, this kind of distortion is disturbing, and those who employ it don’t do so only at desperate moments, as we know. It’s as if there are simply NO rules about what can be taken seriously in the public discourse. I remember a passage in Montaigne’s essays where he makes up an unbelievably stupid syllogism (I think it goes, “drinking quenches thirst; ham causes thirst; therefore, ham quenches thirst”) and then says what the proper response would be: not speech, but a contemptuous smile. But completely idiotic claims today don’t generate that response—they lead instead to long, tortured discussions, to fake outrage followed by what is probably genuine outrage on the part of ordinary citizens. Saying that Obama’s “vindication” statement means he used to be dubious about the country is as stupid as the Montaigne syllogism, but here we have people making millions of dollars to talk smart taking it seriously.

On a related issue, Glenn Greewald has a good short essay today in Salon titled “The Single Worst Expression in American Politics” on the creeping and insidious practice of referring to the president as “commander in chief,” as if that tribal-sounding, militaristic phrase actually sums up what the presidency means. It’s something I have been privately noticing for a long time, so I’m glad to see Greenwald so roundly condemning it. No doubt the growth of U.S. economic and military power in the previous century is largely responsible for this dangerous transformation of our understanding of the president’s role (Nixon’s so-called “imperial presidency” being one symptom of it), but George W. Bush’s reckless, high-handed tenure has furthered this tendency. A moment that crystallized my dislike for this “c-in-c” business was the Republican primary debates. In one of them, one of the candidates said something to the effect that people’s first right was the right to be kept alive (I’m paraphrasing, but I believe that’s pretty close to what he said). Scarcely any statement could be less true to the spirit of the Republic. The president’s primary job is to protect the constitution – not our foolish hides, snouts, and tails.

I vote for sending morning jackass the definition for vindicate over and over and over. I guess along with “the google” he also doesn’t make use of ” the dictionary”

Whenever I use my “Potty Mouth” people remind me that you show your ignorance when you curse. But after reading a LOT of Bob’s posts the past few weeks, I would have to save “FREAK ALL Y’ALL!”How else can you channel the rage against the HypoChristian Republicunts? It’s been building for eight years.
