Prime Time Thread

Open thread for documenting the constant variety of “extended weekend” cable new hackery.

Tonight! Did you remember to turn your clocks back today? And when the crap are we going to end the clock touching in America?! Enough! It’s only 7:45 on the east coast and it feels like it’s been dark since Thursday.

Also… $2200 to go! 16-and-a-half hours until our midnight Monday ‘Ten Grand for Obama’ deadline.

8:48PM: Important factual correction in this post from earlier today. Take a look.

I know what you mean, Bob. Now we go into vmpaire mode on the east coast. Waking up in darkness and leaving work in darkness. Daylight savings time has outworn its usefulness.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

    That would be “vampire” mode.

Well, I donated. I finally posted the tribute to my dad that I have been trying to write since he died end of August. It’s still not right, but it’s the best I could do today. And, I made a donation in his name, out of the very meager funds that I have. Thanks for doing the fundraiser.QT

It’s time for Pat Buchanan took a few days off

  • dontpanic23

Oh shit I just saw the greatest commercial yet, the Progressive something Foundation, nearly an entire song of Paul Simon (can’t think of title) and pictures of houses for sale, people agonizing over bills–REALITY–and then just a shot (with line in song “and we wonder what went wrong”) a pic of Bush and McCain, then “We Need Change”. The only sound was the song. It was killer.

Hi gang…Im not watching any cable news shows tonight as a gift to myself! But did anyone hear about Obama’s Election night plans? I think I heard earlier today that somewhere in Chicago they might be expecting about a million people to show up! Just picture that…

  • GItheJOE

I will be back in an hour. I am addicted to TRUEBLOOD on HBO. I know it is stupid but there is a lot of talk about civil liberties pertaining to Vampires. Hopefully Obama wins Louisiana in the deep south to stop this Red state Blue state bullshit and we can be American again. I hate the culture war and an Obama victory is the end of not only two military conflicts but also this whole spiritual war.

  • dontpanic23

Whoa, Cmin. That’s major.I didn’t watch for about 6 hours while my son and I caught a few movies. My team has a bye week so I could live without football and a movie I’d never seen was “Meet Joe Black” turned out to be great.

  • dontpanic23

    Well put, THE.

  • PackyJ

Don’t Panic:Here it is. Once again, this tough Alaskan guy got all misty-eyed:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbuLchsauKs

  • PackyJ

DP: I forgot. The title of the song is “American Tune.”I’ve been a huge Paul Simon fan since grade school… and as long as he keeps writing and singing, I will continue to be.

  • PackyJ

Bob:Even though you’re a “flamer,” you’ve convinced me to throw some more money into the pot.I suspect it’s BECAUSE you’re a giant flamer, but what do I know?

  • dontpanic23

Thanks, Packy, I’ve loved him since my mom had S and G’s first album when I was about 10-11, late 60s. That’s just one I never listened to a lot but had heard. I have never gotten that excited over a political ad, I know that. Thanks so much for doing the legwork while I just listened to Rachel do an excellent job of reporting our seniors standing-in-line dilemma as a poll tax.Bob’s a flamer? It’s hard to know in typed words. But I don’t agree that he’s an asshole. :>)

  • ceu

Rachel just did a really good editorial on how long lines at early voting sites constitute a poll tax. Damn, she’s good. It’s a great ad, DontPanic. Best part is that Simon didn’t have to change the words to fit the ad.shit, Packy. Jackson Browne and Paul Simon – you have fine taste in music. :)

  • PackyJ

Ceu:Well, thanks. I’ve always been kind of a lefty, I guess, and music that has some sort of social commentary has always seemed to pull me in.What’s really telling is that the songs that Browne, Simon, and Bob Dylan wrote 20, 30, or even 40+ years ago are still relevant today.I guess that the more things change, the more they stay the same.I’m hoping it’ll be different with an Obama Presidency.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFowNFvmUxw

  • PackyJ

DP: I made the assumption that by “flamer,” the email idiot meant “flaming liberal.”That’s something I’ve been called many times, and I’m proud of it.

  • dontpanic23

Packy, I wasn’t insulting him if it was meant as flaming in another sense. That’s just the first term that came to mind. My daughter is bi and has one of those constant gaydars that she isn’t shy about sharing her thoughts on (in her own terms).Ceu, I’m thinking of moving in with Packy, taking the trek to Alaska, because of our similar tastes in music. And his take on them that is almost identical to mine. (Two words: Phil Ochs)

  • PackyJ

DP, I guess that since people’s sexual orientation makes little difference to me (weird for a guy in his mid-fifties form red-neck Alaska, huh?) that “flaming liberal” is what popped into my head.My parents, apparently, were decades ahead of their time, and taught me that bigotry isn’t a quality.Phil Ochs was incredible. It’s a shame that his life went all to hell near the end.

  • GItheJOE

DP, I love the “The” comment thanks for welcoming me into the Cesca brother or sisterhood. I just had a hernia operation this week so between the 6 winter lagers and 6 Hydrocodone I may not get straight to the point. This fucking election has to end on Tuesday. It has consumed my life.

  • dontpanic23

I’m not bigoted about it either. The way flaming came into my brain first was because of my daughter’s affectionate use of the word. My parents were the same way here in redneck NC.Yes, Ochs would have been a big voice during the Bush admin. Same daughter as above discovered him in my CD collection about the time we were headed for Iraq and became a listener (She especially loved “I Ain’t Marching Anymore”). His was a sad story when he wouldn’t go commercial so didn’t get play and gradually went over the edge.

  • ceu

Thanks for the link, Packy. I heard “Lives in the Balance” on the radio a few weeks back & thought how appropriate it was for this time when it was written more than 20 years ago. Good lyrics. Made ya think while you were singing along.”Chimes of Freedom” has been playing in my mind for a couple weeks now…

  • dontpanic23

Ouch, THE! I take almost that many in a whole day (yes, by doctor’s orders, for whoever is out there listening) and it isn’t dulling the pain of having to sit through the next few days of this election for me either. It does help in other ways.I’ve only been here a couple of months myself so am not exactly the designated Welcome Wagon, but I was amused by your panicky remark last night and our reaction to it and felt I needed to explain. You do have good input here.

  • GItheJOE

Hey folks, come up to DEAN. I started the madness come and finish it for me. I am in the military so I am supposed to get up at 0530. However, I am milking this hernia for everything it is worth. Keith is a rerun anyway.
