Warning: My tastes are eclectic, but my MP3 player is mostly used during workouts, so it tends to be on the heavier side. plus, I’m a musical Locavore, so most of these will be bands you’ve never heard of:1) “Course of Human Events” by Séance Fiction2) “Parasite” by The Fiddleworms3) “Zip City” by The Drive-By Truckers4) “Davey Moore” by Boombox5) “Channel Four” by Page 806) “Monkey Wrench” by Foo Fighters7) “Air We Breathe” by Ledbetter8) “Alabama Line” by Byron Green9) “Hearts on Loan” by Red Mouth10) “Renegades of Funk” by Rage Against the Machine

  • dontpanic23

Ceu, could you pass yours please? Jonathan Edwards? I thought I was the only person ever heard of him. Still have the vinyl, no mp3s of him. “Shanty” would be good. “Athens County”. Ah, good stuff.”Empty Chairs”–shit, now I’m making a new mp3 list.Watching an 8 hour movie, will have to list my ten later. I think Billy Bragg and Eric Bogle are next up.

and a peek into the pre-ipod-thingie days- I gave myself a turntable for my b’day and just recently started busting the shrinkwrap on a massive collection of long stashed platters. I’m only into ‘BC’ and ‘ST’(Artists, not songs ’cause I’ve been listening/flipping/and listening to everything for weeks…1-Bowie (acres of it)2-B-52′s(just the first 2)3-Kate Bush (imagining her as the dried up shell of a bug on my windowsill that Tori Amos sucked the liquid center out of).4-Birthday Party (the last spasmatic shiver of my punk days segueing near-seamlessly into…5-Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (omg, ‘From Her to Eternity’, the soundtrack to my testicles finally descending)6-Sparks (many styles over the years, but with firm roots in Gilbert &Sullivan- their new work is f’kg revolutionary)7-sugarcubes (marking a time when bjork had an ‘Icelandic Fred Schnieder’ to play off of)8-T-Rex, and their folkier pre-conception Tyrannisaurus Rex (formative? I still wear nail polish)There is no 9- yet, this is my mid-life crisis. I’ll be at this for years!

  • ceu

Dontpanic & you older folks – last year for Christmas my kids got me an Ion Turntable – looks like a regular turntable, but connects to your computer and converts your vinyl albums into music files suitable for burning to CD or putting on your iPod. (I think there’s a newer model out that goes directly to the iPod and bypassing the computer altogether) It’s soooo fabulous! And it’s a great Christmas gift for that person who just can’t bear to get rid of those crates of albums.Dontpanic – Jonathan Edwards is great! I haven’t seen him in years, but back in the 70s I saw him numerous times at bars and other venues around CT. He’s still playing – played in West Hartford last Fed.Carl – A Little Night Music? Weekend in the Country or Send in the Clowns. :) The Concert in Central Park – nothing better for a long trip. And All Things Must Pass.

Sorry- the thread is music and I can’t shut up- the last ten CD’s I’ve purchased;1-Ben Folds/new-”they’re watching me. watching me fall” heavily Warren Zevon, Stellar!2- Erasure/new; blecch! sorry Andy, your voice is too old3- Kaiser Chiefs/new; retro sound, still have the balls to rhyme- keep trying to eclipse “Every Day I Love You Less & Less”4-Built to Spill/old, played in minor chords (to denote sadness) yet pretty= good music to commute to, ie. Radiohead?5-Donovan/Greatest Hits; try and keep “Jennifer Juniper” out of your head.6-Josh Zuckerman/debut;some yodeling homo with very hooky songs-my kids LOVE him (they LOVE Blue Oyster Cult- I follow their lead)7-Duffy/debut; turn it off half way through. Till then- yeah!8-Eno/new;see #49-Eno/Here Come the Warm Jets- oh for fucks sake buy it! I lived without it for decades because I had it on vinyl (with no way to play it) It’s on the top ten ‘stranded on a desert island’ mix!10- Zaibach/Anthems I bought it,but had to reteurn it ’cause the CD was missing from the sleeve- but if ever an album showed great promise- it was Zaibach/Anthems!Get to Newbury Comics and get me one- I’ll pay you back!

Dil Se is a great soundtrack, but THE song from it is Chaiyya Chaiyya. I’m a big fan of A.R. Rahman in general.Zaibach? Is that anything like Laibach? Here are some of the songs I’ve complied for an online advent calendar featuring the best songs of 2008:Elbow – The Bones of YouCaptain – Keep an Open MindThe Week That Was – Scratch The SurfaceGoldfrapp – Little BirdIt Bites – Great DisastersThe Herbaliser (feautring Yungun a.k.a. Essa) – Just Won’t StopPortishead – Machine GunThe Sparks – She Got Me PregnantThe Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of the UnderstatementThe Foals – Hummer (yes, the single came out in 2007, but the album was from this year)I have yet to decide which the best track are off of Big Elf’s Cheating the Gallows, Squarepusher’s Just a Souvenir, Dungen’s 4, Neon Neon’s Stainless Style, Silvery’s Thunderer and Excelsior, Nick Cave’s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!, The Pineapple Thief’s Tightly Unwound and whether or not Glasvegas really qualify.

Oh Girl- Chi-LitesI Melt With You- Modern EnglishI Don’t Care Anymore- Phil CollinsStiff Upper Lip- AC/DCI’m Black And I’m Proud- James BrownLandslide- Stevie NicksVentura Highway- AmericaI Wanna Be Sedated- RamonesFather And Son- Cat StevensTaking Care Of Business- Bachman- Turner OverdriveI’ve listened to AC/DC’s ” Black Ice ” at least a hundred times since I picked it up at Wally World last month. Also rediscovering a lot of hard , hard rock : Buckcherry, Brides Of Destruction, Burning Brides, The Tight Bros From Way Back When, etc. That was fun.

  • Teaflax

Oh, and Ben Folds being heavily Warren Zevon? That’s a little sad to hear. He used to be really good and tended to stay firmly away from rock clichés (or at least use them in non-standard ways) in his songwriting, something Zevon can’t be said to be particularly famous for.

Let me invite everyone interested in classic rock to the Amazon ” Classic Rock ” blog. Been doing it a year and it’s a blast. I’ve learned more music there in the past year than in the previous 57. Go to Amazon.com- music- classic rock- the blogs are listed at the bottom of the page. Something for everyone , regardless of musical persuasion.PRC

  • Teaflax

The only music blog I can find om Amazon is Chordstrike and that’s just chock full of mainstreamery.

  • prcleburne

Teaflax-Go to Amazon.com. On the left, where it says ” Shop all departments ” , go to ” Movies, music, and games ” , and select ” Music ” from the drop-down menu. When you get to the ” Music ” page, on the left it says ” browse ” and ” genres “. Under ” genres “, click on ” Classic Rock “. Near the bottom of the ” Classic Rock ” page is the ” Classic Rock Forum “.Enjoy.

Ok, no shuffle, so here’s the first song of a different artist in the order they are listed–wait, that only gets to “C” in the alphabet–so I’ll randomly jump down and stab my cursor:Arlo Guthrie–Gabriel’s Mother’s Highway Ballad #16 BluesClash–Career OpportunitiesDougie MacLean–Scots Wha’ HaeErie Og–Go on Home, British SoldiersGreat Big Sea–Barrett’s PrivateersJD Souther–Faithless LoveJimmy Buffett–I-95 Song (Were You Born An Asshole)Moody Blues–Emily’s SongNeil Young–Sugar MountainPeter, Paul and Mary–El SalvadorStill only got to the “P”s–oh, well. That left out the Pogues, Pure Prarie League, Ralph McTell, the Real MacKenzies, the Roches…so many. I didn’t get to Stan Rogers, Steve Earle, Tom Lehrer! Tom Petty! Tom Rush! All the Toms! Fifty Wolfe Tones songs and the Zager and Evans one-hit wonder classic. There’s a 2GB SD card in there and I take forever to get all the way around.Ceu–I MUST find that Ion thing. I have been thinking of getting rid of the old albums to make space for my old age but haven’t been able to do it. Some are replaced but too many aren’t (like J. Edwards–I can’t believe he’s still playing and would love to hear him live). Now I’ll be searching for your gizmo. THANK YOU.

  • Teaflax

prcleburne: thanks for the instructions, but since you wrote “Something for everyone , regardless of musical persuasion” I was expecting blogs on other genres, and also Amazon’s genre list is very limited and US-centric. Also, you pointed me to a forum, not a blog.I generally prefer music writing that isn’t genre-based anyway, because genre names – while useful shorthand when discussing music – tend to concentrate on the surface elements of the music, rather on composition. When Yes and Kansas, Fiona Apple and Alanis Morrisette, Japan and Spandau Ballet, Squarepusher and Daft Punk and Elbow and Coldplay (to list bands I love and dislike in that order) are considered genre brothers, you know the main consideration are primarily sound, production, and maybe arrangement.

I’m leaning toward the first one but can use input. I may be suggesting this to Mrs. Santa if I can choose one and the prices stay around $100 or less. I can then bring a couple hundred albums with me into the 21st. And get rid of them–I think. I’ll miss the artwork most.
