The Weekly Presidential YouTube Address

New internet traditions to be aware of:

Today, President-elect Obama will record the weekly Democratic address not just on radio but also on video — a first. The address, typically four minutes long, will be turned into a YouTube video and posted on Obama’s transition site, Change.gov, once the radio address is made public on Saturday morning.

No-one pays much attention to the president’s weekly radio address anymore. Why? Because it’s on radio. But I assure you, the YouTube versions will be all over the blogotubes where actual human beings will watch.

Adding… Fireside chats.

While a totally superficial measure when you boil it down, it will make his Administration seem so much more transparent, and involved & engaged with the country…A weekly update from the President on you computer…after a clown that gave, what—like six press conferences in 8 years?

Emphasis on the SEEM. I recognize that this is just an update in medium…but the value of appearances cannot be underestimated.

They’ll be much more likely to get covered on the teevee news, being on video.

I listened to Bush’s radio broadcasts all the time as a podcast. I even broadcast them on local radio. But to be fair and balanced, I followed it with The Onion’s spoof presidential address and clips from Monty Python. Good fun. Sadly, The Onion stopped the spoof because everybody stopped caring about W’s addresses. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll look for a podcast of Obama’s weekly address and maybe broadcast it with an introduction of Will.I.Am’s “Yes We Can.”

Wow – you guys are pretty down on this, whereas I’m thrilled!Part of governance/leadership is gaining the trust of the American people. Keeping people engaged outside of major crises is a good thing, and is probably why the radio addresses were started in the first place. I don’t even know where on the radio to find the presidential address (I asked as much when Bob posted last week’s). But this is one more way that the populace is engaged by its government – and this is one of the main things I want an Obama presidency to do.Government is too big, too complex, for average people to make sense of it – one of the most compelling arguments for Republicans is the push for small government – it is very easy to feel like the huge bureaucracy we have is a waste of taxpayer money, and that withholding taxes and strangling the government to its smallest possible size is a virtue unto itself. Without arguing for or against that position – it’s an easier sell when you realize how disconnected from it all we the people actually are. Weekly addresses from the President is a step toward changing that.Change.gov indeed!QT

Bob, I’m on here all the time, as well as Kos and HuffPost. I would like to request you post the weekly addresses here. I don’t frequent YouTube, so I’ll never think to go look for it.

Mr. Strawdog, how could you stand listening to Dubya’s weekly broadcasts? Whenever I hear his phony corn-pone cowboy accent, I want to throw the radio across the room. And I am also pleased with this idea. I like the idea of a weekly update, and what the President believes to be the priorities. President Roosevelt’s fireside chats helped him connect with the citizens. He got re-elected three times.I vote to repeal the 22nd amendment, by the way. Barack is going to be in his mid-fifties at the end of his second term, just hitting his stride. The guy’s not even inaugurated yet, and I’m already thinking of a third term.

I think this is an awesome idea. I was thinking of taking the time to put the audio on my blog once these addresses started, now all I have to do is embed the YouTube video. There will be many millions more who will seek the YouTube address than the audio, hence widespread viewership on a regular basis.

Not only did we elect the best person for the job, we also elected the coolest!

I love it. I don’t listen to radio unless the power is out during a football game (or the tv announcers are lame and I do radio sound/tv picture). That’s it. Everything else is internet or tv.I hope you will post them here too, Bob. It will save me a trip into the YouTubes since I’m here with my Morning Awesome cup every morning anyway. Are they Saturdays? What a great way to bring more people into the weekly message. Add that to having it from the mouth of a guy with brains (for a change) and you can’t go wrong.
