Thus Spake Gunderson

by Lee Richard Stranahan

As much as I despise George W. Bush, I don’t lay the failure of the economy entirely at his feet. He hasn’t been the leader…of anything, really. What’s becoming clear is that he’s been a sap. A schlub. A patsy. In both a metaphorical and often completely literal sense he’s been taking his orders from the real people that let America down; those giant f-cking corporations.

Big insurance companies like AIG. Big banks like Citi and Wamu.Big military contractors like Halliburton. Big pharma – all of ‘em. Big oil. Big media. We all know what they’ve done and why – but I’ll just quote Sheriff Marge Gunderson from Fargo as she tried to make sense of pointless carnage.

And for what? For a little bit of money. There’s more to life than a little money, you know. Don’tcha know that? And here ya are, and it’s a beautiful day. Well. I just don’t understand it.

Yah. (Sarah Palin stole that accent from Marge Gunderson. So we’re stealin’ it back.)

How fuckin’ dare you insult Marge Gunderson, Frances McDormand and the Coen brothers like that?Next thing you know there’ll be accusations that ACORN vote fraud and Bill Ayers were behind Hautman’s blue-winged teal winning the 29-cent stamp. Then you’ll just start describin’ her as “funny lookin’” which would be better than insultin’ Marge like that, y’know.

All true Lee. GWB has been so obviously in the pocket of energy since before his “election” that it’s odd to me more people didn’t see his catering to corporate interests sooner or expect it from the beginning. I didn’t see the Haliburton ties of Bush/Cheney since we didn’t have a war on in 2000. That’s turned out very well for the Cheney stock portfolio I’m sure.

The scorched earth policy that GWB is implementing now with his final executive orders granting energy access to protected areas of our environment is the final insult that I still can’t really comprehend. I do know it will be bad but not how bad. I’m guessing Iraq to our domestic environmental concerns type bad. Which would suck for all future generations…

I take none of the offense that cousinavi does to the Fargo comparison.

And TypePad effin sucks in an amazing way. Can’t use Google Chrome to comment.

well,i hate to disagree with lee, especially after all of those fabulous reasons to vote for obama, but on this i must. of course we lay this dead economy at GW’s feet. he was elected as the leader of this country twice! well, at least once. he has been unbelievably incompetent and uncaring at his job and that comes back to him, not just the horrible corporate machine that has always looked to eat us all alive in the name of the almighty buck. this “leader”, as we speak, still looks to undermine the economy by giving paulson carte blanche to line his friends pockets with $700B of your grandchildren’s money, keep us embroiled in the war in iraq (4500 plus americans DEAD and 100′s of thousands iraqi’s DEAD), totally fuck the environment by selling federal parks to oil companies and screw us in the future by burrowing unqualified dumbasses into gov’t jobs for life and leave our next president to restore not only our way of life but the constitution which has been totally compromised under the W regime. and i’m not even going to start on katrina. darfur and the polar bear. even marge, i think, would throw this guy into the chipper. no excuses.

I’ve always admired Madge Gunderson, so it pains me to say this : she sounds a lot like Sarah Palin when she talks. Makes a lot more sense, though.

Sorry. I skipped your last sentence.

I love Marge!! She’s all smarts and subtle sass. One of my all-time favorite characters :-)
