I liked the overall feel of it but the dialogue was so hammy. “I do believe we have just borne witness to history, my good sir”
GItheJOE
The timing of this series and this historic election was awesome. I watched John Adams and asked myself one question,”What the hell happen to this country?” Our founding fathers realized the need for position flexible. Sorry. What I meant to say was that these men were trying to good things for this country and the people. If John Adams, Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin were alive to see the corporations running this country and the world they would shit their pants.
MG
People who are familiar with the founders laughed at those last few moments….Ben Franklin– the man who invented everything from the lightning rod to musical instruments (to name only a few)– marveled at a Jeffersonian invention.
GItheJOE
MG,I am a student and lover of history and know full well that this series was a romantic versus of real American history. However, I want to believe that this country and these men(woman/Abagail) had the best of intentions when separating from Britain. The language of the Constitution and the DOI would suggest that our founders had great minds and foresight. Yes, these were imperfect documents but the provisions were installed within the Constitution to change it when necessary. Don’t tell Lee but this is one thing I have faith in.

Now you’ve gone and done it… I think I love you…The book is an amazing experience that should be read by all. The HBO documentary was compelling but without all the missing pieces that they did not address the story lacked the fullness and the passion of the real thing.

Will have you read American Lion yet? It’s on my shelf. Staring.

>>Will have you read American Lion yet? It’s on my shelf. StaringSince it’s Meacham, is the book on the center-right of your shelf? HOO-HOO! ZING!

Meacham actually sold me on the book during his last Maher show appearance. He came off as center-center, which is all I ask of my historical reading.

Hey I am still sitting with a five pound copy of Atlas Shrugged, on a dare from a friend, which I started to read and never got 1/3 way into. I am naming it as one of my New Years resolutions to accomplish. I have enough problems with this alone.

>>Hey I am still sitting with a five pound copy of Atlas Shrugged, on a dare from a friend, which I started to read and never got 1/3 way into. Why would you do this to yourself? Was there no Jonah Goldberg readily available?
http://willpen.wordpress.com willpen
Travis,It was either that or having to sit through a definition of “Objectivism” by a dear friend who has a biophysics degree from Columbia, is a an artist, builds geodesic domes in Vermont and cabins in Alaska. What can I say.. I am a good friend.

The Jonah Goldberg reference .. I’m gonna have to think on that one..

@willpen:American Sphinx is outstanding. TJ is by far my favorite American president. What a brilliant mess of a man.

Totally OT, but my grandson stopped by and started singing (to the tune of Puff the magic Dragon):Barack Hussein Obama came to DC to clean up the f#&cking mess left by the GOP!I’ve added:They’d turned a budget surplus into a pile of debt,And now they clearly don’t even give a fucking shit!Come on Cescans. Let’s do IT!Where’s Elvis when you need him?

Is it me or is the scene reminiscent of what he might see today? Progressive members of congress trying mightily to move forward a document that benefits all but having to proceed cautiously lest they anger the conservatives, who in their petulant fury might derail the entire endeavor.Everything changes, and nothing changes. It was a beautiful scene, though. It nicely suggested that the Declaration of Independence was written with great care. It would be impossible to write such a document today.

I’m currently reading “For Liberty and Glory: Washington, Lafayette, and Their Revolutions” by James R. Gaines. It’s just a fantastic story and has a lot of contemporary relevance, particularly the economic state of pre-revolutionary France. Gaines is very good at showing the struggles and obstacles, social, political, and economic, that our founding fathers, and those abroad, faced.

And also the position flexible.

This was a beautiful mini-series, but I preferred Generation Kill. Both excellent though.
