Barack Obama Lassos Moon

WASHINGTON — A month before his inauguration, Americans choose Barack Obama as the man they admire most in the world, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.

I’ve always wondered what kind of impact this sort of thing has on a guy’s ego. I mean, the most admired person in the world. That’s a pretty awesome thing.

While this is cool, I think Chris Rock’s words at the Grammys (Or was it MTV’s Video Music Awards?) are a cautionary tale.I’m paraphrasing, but the gist was:”While you’re all happy and proud tonight, look around and enjoy this moment. Because you *might not be back again next year.* (Hold up award) See this? Color Me Badd has THREE of these.”Which is to say, yay, but heed the sage words of Han Solo in the cockpit to Luke upon successfully blasting some Tie Fighters, you know?

I fear this will lead to even more of the attitude that the man can do nothing wrong. That said, it’s a great sign for the first black President.

I wouldn’t worry, Michelle is there to keep him grounded.

@Josh”Don’t get penisy, kid”This might work in our favor when it comes to forcing the Congress to be a really good Congress. I saw an interview ages ago where a congressional Democrat said they hated Reagan’s telegenic superiority. He said every time Reagan went on tv and gave a speech, their phones would ring off the hook the next day with constituents saying “You do what Mr. Reagan wants!” Or some such. With Obama energizing his base into emailing/faxing/calling their congressfolk on really important issues, maybe we can get our completely spineless leadership to grow a spine and lead. After, of course, Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi have lost their positions. They. Have. To. Go.

A youngsta senator reppin’ the Southside thinking he could be the first brown president. Me thinks his ego was pretty freakin’ GI-normous from the start. The odds were clearly stacked against him and yet he…BELIEVED. This is why I admire him. This historic event in my lifetime lets me know that I’m not blowing smoke up my kids’ ass when I say that with hard work, faith, perserverence and intelligence you can move mountains. Obama is my walking, living, breathing example. Now I can give my kid a lil break from the Black History lessons of the past. I’m puttin’ the books on the shelf for a minute and enjoying history and greatness with my child in REAL time.Putting all the expectations the world has for Prez Elect aside, this one gift the universe has given to me by way of the Obama family is truly Goddamn Awesome.

Sooner or later one realizes ego is good for a few things, such as survival and other primitive urges. I think Obama gave his up for dead awhile back, seeing that it serves no real purpose. Now, pride? That’s another matter. I’m sure he feels great pride in that but I seriously doubt it will go to his head (via ego).

“hard work, faith, perserverence and intelligence you can move mountains.”Yeah, we have a real, live example to point to now. With most of the GOP and right wingers, they never wanted to put in hard work. Instead they relied on deception of self and others. And we know them by their fruits. Yee-uck!

A picture just popped in my head: Barack Obama as Luke Skywalker & Joe Biden as Han Solo. To take that a little further George W. as Darth Vader & Dick Cheney as Emperor Palpatine.

Even Marcus Aurelius had someone, so I’ve heard, whose sole job it was to whisper in his ear, as he went riding through the cheering throngs in Rome, “This too shall pass.” That was one wise leader. I get the same feeling from Obama–the sense, expressed overtly again and again, that he understands on a profound level that this entire movement is not about him. He’s not in it on the ego level, and that’s what makes him in part such a compelling and transformative figure.
