Evangelical vs. Crazy

Glenn Greenwald:

There is a respectful and civil (even if clearly wrong) case to make against gay marriage, or against abortion, or in favor of a hard-line towards Iran. But in each case, Warren opts for the most hateful, not respectful, rhetoric to defend his position.

Adding to this, there are also literally thousands of evangelical pastors in America — even liberal ones! — who haven’t compared same-sex marriage to kiddie rape. Invite one of them. Not one of the crazy ones.

That’s really not what Warren did, though.

    What? Yes it is.

@LeeWarren: “I’m opposed to the redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister be together and call that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.”That’s pretty clearly comparing same-sex marriage with pederasty and the like.

It’s really not, Bob. Its a preacher being a preacher – and opposing any kind of change in the standard (as he understands it) for marriage.Boy. Um. A sincere question. When’s the last time you’ve been to a real evangelical service? I’m guessing (and I believe I read) that you grew up Catholic, so this may be totally not within your cultural experience, but there’s a cadence to evangelical preaching, that includes run-on ideas – these aren’t equations, as much as rhetorical devices to make a point.Keep in mind also, that if you believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with homosexuality, then you will of course be offended at the comparison between homosexuality and incest and pederasty. If on the other hand, you believe absolutely, that homosexuality (or homosexual behavior) is wrong – then that’s what you believe, and you are well within your rights to list it along with other wrong things. The reason we get offended at the comparison with pederasty is that there’s an implied abuse, whereas there is no implied abuse between consenting adult homosexuals. BUT – if there is ever going to be dialogue – you have to start from a place of understanding where the person you’re talking to is coming from – rather than imposing your opinions on his or her words. When you can separate out your opinion from what your opponent is actually saying, you can reframe the discussion, and have better control of the dialogue. If you can’t do that, you can only ever shout past the understanding of the other.QT

“…there’s a cadence to evangelical preaching that includes run-on-ideas…” ???QT, even if that’s true, that’s no excuse for lumping homosexuality in with incest, pedophelia, etc. Give me a break. You’re telling me an evangelical minister can’t organize his thoughts or prepare a little ‘rough draft’ of his sermon before he speaks to his congregation?? Really? Wow.I’ve spent the last 16 years with evangelical in-laws(converted from Catholicism, ironically). QT, they give religion a bad name. Sister in law, as a grown woman, “counseled” a high school boy with the hopes of convincing him he’s not gay. Told him he was wrong in the eyes of Jesus, etc. To a boy!!! THIS is the reason so many gay teens commit suicide. Ignorant garbage like this. From what I’ve seen, evangelicals will prosthletise ad nauseum—not with a sincere desire to “save a soul,” but to make themselves feel better about themselves. To them, “righteous” is a complement. No tolerance of anyone/anything outside their flock. Seriosuly, I’ve seen it/heard it. It’s evil, in my opinion.I have top ten list, but I’ll save Bob’s wall space. And my blood pressure.

QT, Bob left off the question that the interviewer asked next, and Warren’s answer.Q: “Do you think those are equivalent to gays getting married?”A: “Oh, I do.”So, Warren DID equate gay marriage to incest & pedophilia.

Yeah but out of all of the pastors in America, a majority of them don’t support gay marriage. Out of pastors you MAY have heard of, a very large majority of them are very much Republican and very much against gays and abortion and such. The most vocal have been Falwell and Robertson. Warren is a step in the right direction for the White House.
