Hitting The Ground Flying

by Stranahan

On the day after the inauguration, I think the Obama economic team will immediately have legislation ready to go. But will that overshadow the foreign policy team’s move to change America’s reputation in the eyes of the world?

Nope – because that’s already happened. America’s reputation changed the moment Barack Obama was declared the winner of the election and it changed even more today with one of the best known woman on the entire planet being named as Secretary Of State.

Lee, you are a greater optimist than I. The election of Barack Obama helped our global status, surely, but a complete change? I don’t think we’re quite there yet. I think the world is watching us with a cautious optimism. They are hopeful…but there are still two months of Bush/Cheney left. And I think the majority of the world is realistic and cynical. It’s hard to get really consumed by hope when you see the worst of men day after day. And two months is a long time. I think our reputation is slowly beginning to be repaired, but we still have a way to go before we can name it “changed.” I will also be interested in the global reactions to Hillary Clinton as SoS over the next few days. I’m not a huge fan, but as I’ve said I’m willing to trust Obama on this one. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the world thinks.
