Layoff Hearings

A Dream by Lee Stranahan

I want to see Congress hold hearings and bring CEOs in front of the national spotlight. It’s easy enough to find the ones who are laying off workers not because the company is in real trouble but simply to add to the bottom line. Ask the CEOs how much money they make. Ask about their bonuses. Ask about whose dumb decisions cost companies millions.

Use the power of public hearings to expose one of the biggest problems in the economy right now – greedy, overpaid, incompetent executives using the economic crisis as an excuse to cut jobs, cut benefits, and scare the rest of the remaining workers into keeping their mouths shuts out of the fear that they could be the next to go.

UPDATE: I’ve started a petition – please sign it and pass it on: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/nolayoff/petition.html

Amen. I lived in Michigan for 15 years. The past 7 have been BRUTAL for people. People have no idea how many jobs trickle down from the Auto Industry. It won’t be just Michigan, people. You think it’s bad now??And I don’t buy this “bailout fatigue” excuse. Help AIG, etc., whose problems were caused by their own GREED??

Two more signatures added to the petition…. And an excellent petition it is, too!

Thanks – it’s nice to see 8 signatures and 7 of them from people I don’t know! (The other one is me…)

Jen- I think the bailout fatigue thing is probably real, just because when AIG and the rest of the Wall St Douche Patrol came begging, everything was fresh and people were freaking out, and people in a state of severe freak out tend to make irrational decisions. Now that it’s been a little while and there aren’t hoards of wandering Joads schelpping along Route 66 looking for fruit to pick, people are more wary. Especially given how much of a clusterfuck the “TARP” has into. Not that letting the auto industry wouldn’t be a clusterfuck of epic proportions in and of itself. Then again I’m not optimistic about their chances even if we do bail them out. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to bang my head against the table until I don’t care anymore.

Bailout fatigue is a real problem. People are starting to wonder who’s next in line after the auto industry. How many more businesses should be saved from their own bad decisions?Having said that, something does need to be done about the auto industry. Perhaps the Big 3 could be put into receivership until they’re able to turn themselves around. I’m sick of hearing about these CEOs promising pay cuts for themselves. What they need is to resign and let people willing to make cars people want to buy take charge.

I read the title too quickly – Layoff Herrings! Really. Pickle them, or kipper them, or even smoke or fry them, but don’t lay off the yummy little fishes…

Retool the automakers to electric. Every current car they sell now the company needs to set aside some money for electric cars.
