Tonight! What the hell — let’s do it again. Hit ‘shuffle’ on your iPod and list the first 10 songs that come up. If you don’t have an iPod, what are you listening to this week?

What am I listening to?Opeth, “Watershed”. Absolutely incredible. Prog metal. The new AC/DC is really good, in my opinion too.Anyone heard the new GNR? It’s been so overhyped, I haven’t been able to generate any interset in it.

  • jmrunning3

    That would be “interest”.

  • Tbest609

No iPod. But, today, I saw Aretha Franklin live, at the NYSE. she sang for the tree lighting, and I captured some of it on my cell phone. That means the quality is ultra crappy, and I was at an angle to be behind her the whole time so even what you can see is pathetic. And for all of that… Aretha Franklin! Hard to hear, and she was singing on top of a recording, so not her best performance… and still pretty wonderful. If I figure out how to upload and share, I will. And… a link to my site for the first thing I will be angry about with our President-Elect: http://obamaproject.windonwater.net/2008/12/a-promise-to-keep/QT

I’ve heard the one single on the radio, but I still don’t think it’s the same without Slash & Duff.

Now can we talk not in list form?Bush lit the tree. Not sure how he’s gonna fuck that up, but I’m sure he’ll find a way.

  • jane

Hey kids! BJ’s “Prop 8 Teh Musical” on KO!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Yeah, nothing out of the ordinary with Bush lighting the tree… I was hoping it would catch fire, you know, symbolic of his horrible administration.

  • KatInWilm

I think I may be cheating on Rachel tonight with Christiane Amanpour. She’s got her CNN special on world genocide tonight that I would like to see. And then probably sign up tomorrow to join the Peace Corps.

Did anyone else receive a letter from the NRA today soliciting new members and calling Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Shumer and Feinstein “gun banning extremists.” Don’t quite know how I got on their mailing list but I feel so proud.I remember a campaign ad where Obama was endorsed by an NRA member and BO said he believed in the 2nd amendment and would only go afer illegal weapons.Gonna be a long 4 years folks and it hasn’t even started!!

Be gentle with her, Carl. And she likes when you massage the small of her back.

  • KatInWilm

I’m not trusting you anymore on linkses, Jane. I’m still watching, 5 minutes later, a damn squirrel eating damn nuts. With a fucking Barbie doll. Get a Bratz in there or something so they can get into a knockdown drag-out.

I stopped watching the squirrel after he knocked over Barbie’s table. Cute. Also, right after that, love Barbie holding an Obama bumper sticker.

  • jane

QT, whatever you do, don’t go to the squirrel feeder link above. Apparently you never make it back.I’d love to see Aretha, no matter how she may sound these days nor what I think of her recent music…it’s Aretha, man.

  • KatInWilm

OK, Jane. I believe the term is “whatever blows your skirt up.” :) The Barbie holding the Obama sticker was cute though. And the two grooms. Just not quite 8 minutes of cute.

MA Registry cops are nasty. Really.

  • idreamofskiba

Why did it do that? Weird. I didn’t really want my whole name to show up, but oh well.

I fucking love ‘Prop 8 The Musical.’ Geniusness. And I love me some Doogie.Jack Black on KO tomorrow? That should be interesting.

  • jane

Skibster! I thought I knew that name…Stay AWAY from the squirrel link. I hear it’s a buzz kill.

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

jane, if I can get the video up, I will. Maybe I’ll try to youtube it. Never did that before. And, I’m on the handheld, so I can’t watch the squirrels.ceu: I love “City of New Orleans” :) QT

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Poor Rachel. She’s been fighting a nasty cold and looks so tired. Small of back rubbing time.

  • jane

That song just evokes less than nothing about New Orleans, to me. Couldn’t be more antithetical.

  • scribblechic

Nice playlist Broadway C. Especially track number 2. Would that be from the Ben Folds albums list you were going to email me so I could add the “good stuff” to my collection? I wouldn’t know cuz I never got the list. *side eye*

  • jane

    Carl, try wearing a dress.

  • http://thepoliticalcarnival.blogspot.com/ Paddy

McWolcott!!Are you serious? Into the Night-Benny Mardones? Wow, serious college aged lovestruck angst on that one. I thought I was the only person who bought that “album”.

  • ceu

I’m bettin’ you love New York, too, QT – it’s from The Concert in the Park. :)

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

True that, jane. But its not really about New Orleans, rather, its about a train by that name – so a story about the dying railroads.(you may have already known that and I’m being presumptuous, in which case, my apologies.)QT

  • ceu

Jane! It’s not about New Orleans. LOL!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Wow! Shots fired at Mr. The Broadway Carl! Sorry to disappoint you, Jane. I’m a jazzhead.

Scribble: Ben Folds albums – Ben Folds Five: whatever and Ever Amen, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner. Solo albums: Songs for Silverman, Songs for Goldfish, Rockin’ The Suburbs, Supersunnyspeedgraphic. His new one is pretty good too, “Way To Normal”.

  • jane

No, but when they sat around thinking of a city to stick in there, the place is just so nothing like the song. I don’t remember all the lyrics but it just occurred to me, Why New Orleans?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

@ Jane – I know realize you were telling me to wear a dress for Rachel. I thought that was a comment on my song list. AHAHAHA!

  • idreamofskiba

I clicked on the squirrel link anyway. CUTE!!!

  • dontpanic23

Lost the computer for an hour. Jane: I’m so proud of you. You shared. You play well with others. Gold star for your list. Oh, and the Barbie is disturbing. Need a Ken to sit and worry about what happened to his nuts. I missed an Obama sticker? Shit.Cyclo–I think we’re 2 of the only three into Runrig, at least that I know. My son-in-law is from Scotland and put me onto some great stuff when I was there and since.Ceu – excellent

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

    @ Jane – Duh… “I NOW realize…” Sorry. Dubya Syndrome kicking in.

  • jane

Carl, here’s my comment about your song list: Jesus Christ, that guy really likes musicals. (I fuckin’ hate ‘em.) Sorry, I’m tired and snidey tonight. DP kept me up late! ;)

  • dontpanic23

Losing the computer again to half the neighborhood. Will be back.

  • dontpanic23

    But Jane, it was groovy.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Jane – First Elvis and now DP? The song list is mostly from jazz albums, which is why I included them in the list. But yeah, I like musicals too. THey just didn’t come up on that shuffle. …Am I being defensive? ;)

  • jane

Carl, part of the video Uncle Walter was shot not a mile from where I am sitting right now…I worked on it. The motorized La-Z-Boy was a hoot, and I ended up with the scooter and the bike with the banana seat…not by design.

  • scribblechic

Thanks Mr. The Broadway! BTW Looks like Rachel’s in my hood tonight and since I’m anatomically correct…

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

ceu: I’m out of my depth. I love New York (am a native) but… which park? When? Was there an album by that name or what? And such as.jane: you hate musicals? Wow. I love the old classics. Anyway – sometimes on my way home I ride on train cars named Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or Connecticut, or Sojournor Truth.QT

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Got for it, Scribble. Throw her a bang for me!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

That should be, “GO for it.” I really should read my posts before I submit. Sorry guys. Long fucking day.

  • ceu

Jane! That’s the name of the train. Starts in Illinois and ends in New Orleans.Carl – yeah, just a bit defensive. But no need. I like musicals, too. Warning: reminiscence ahead. First thing I ever saw on Broadway was The Man of La Mancha with Richard Kiley.

  • jane

Alls I can say about Broadway shows (at least outside of Vegas or NY) is, don’t never let anyone make you sit through all of Miss Saigon (only the part with the helicopter leaving Viet Nam is worth seeing).

  • ceu

I’m sorry, QT. I thought you were the one who said the last time we did this that you loved the album The Concert in the Park (Simon & Garfunkel, Central Park). I guess not. :( (and I was so proud of myself for remembering that you liked it….)

  • jane

And none of Miss Saigon is worth hearing.

  • jane

Hey Carl, you’re right, those aren’t Broadway tunes (this time- I saw your other shufflist the other day). I guess I saw Dean Martin, and Harry Connick, and my addled brain went there.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

ceu – Wow! That’s a good one. I wasn’t around for that one. ;) My first Broadway musical was the revival of West Side Story in 1980.

  • KatInWilm

Ohhh…musicals…fun, fun! When I was a kid, my dad made us watch “Fiddler on the Roof” – I’ve still got the soundtrack on my iPod. My first live one was “Les Miserables” at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. I haven’t made it to Broadway, yet – but I will!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Jane – I remember having only one show tune on my last list. I think cminri had the Broadway heavy list the first time. And you’re right. Miss Saigon sucks ass long time.

Anyone else? Favorite show? Most hated show? First show you ever saw?

  • McWolcott

paddy, ever had one of those nights when your hammered and Itunes is helping you find old songs?Yep, I love that old song and Itunes talked me into it!

  • jane

My unsolicited and probably unpopular opinion: Modern musicals suck so fucking bad (mostly, anyway) that they’ve managed to suck all the potential positive connotations right the fuck out of the word Broadway. Except the lighting and scenery, sometimes. But the music parts suck.

  • jane

Carl, I absolutely loved working the Sesame Street shows. Fame wasn’t intolerable to watch every day (often more than once) for a month musically but sucked otherwise. And I will be first in line to see Proposition 8.I remember walking into a restaurant once, seeing a long table of people, asking the hostess and being vindicated, it was the cast of CATS. This was before I had ever even thought about working in film/video/theatre. (You’re required by IATSE to spell it that way, people.)My point is, those people looked like cats WITHOUT ANY FUCKING MAKEUP ON.

  • ceu

Carl – I was in 7th grade. Good times on Broadway :) Saw Purlie in 8th grade – Melba Moore.Favorite musical? Who can have a favorite? Hmmm…maybe Mame or Camelot. Loved the music from Two by Two, but never saw it performed.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

I mostly agree with you Jane. Q: What is your favorite show? What was the last “modern” show you liked?

I loved Purlie but I saw it on TV. I saw most of my fave musicals on the telly spending the younger years in the Arkansas sticks. I did see The Full Monty in NYC. I volunteered after 9/11 with the red cross and on one of our days off they gave us tix.The suckiest musical I sat through recently was freakin’ High School Musical. I did it for the girl child. In about 2 weeks I’ll be suffering thru The Cheetah Girls concert. I was praying they would cancel it after the naked pics non-scandal scandal. no such luck.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

ceu – Purlie! With Cleavon Little too! Very cool. West Side Story was my 8th grade trip too!

My all time favorite? I can’t name one myself. I never get tired of the music to On The Town.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Scribble – New Rule: You cannot mention a naked pics scandal without providing a link to the naked pics.

  • scribblechic
  • ceu

Oh! I loved A Little Night Music – you mentioned that the other night.I grew up in CT & we went to NYC on school field trips, starting in 5th or 6th grade. Went to a few symphonies (it’s tough to be 10 & sit thru that. I still hate most classical music & I think that’s why) and then to musicals. The schools don’t do that anymore, which is too bad. It was an important part of education – that popular culture is more than what’s on TV.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Oh right! I remember these now. Thanks for playing!

Awful shows? Lestat and Tom Sawyer, both of which I had the misfortune of being the head electrician on. I did have a great time in SF with the Lestat out of town tryout, though, so it was a trade off.

  • jane

Carl, one of the only real musicals I ever liked was (ironically to me) Jesus Christ Superstar, but the movie version (it was mostly the original cast, wasn’t it?). The guy from Earth Wind & Fire (?) played Judas, I think.Still not something I’d load in an IPod.I avoid modern shit like the Bubonic Plague. Except for I suffered through a musical Peter Pan recently (a friend’s kid was in it) which fuckity fuckfuckfuck fucking suuuuuuuucked. So did the singers, so twice as bad.

  • scribblechic

My faves-Don’t laugh: Little Shop of Horrors and The Lion King. Didn’t love The Color Purple so much but I didn’t see the NYC cast. When they came to SF they had that Destiny Child’s 3rd chic that no one can ever remember playin Shug Avery.yeah…no.

  • jane

Holy carp, Ceu, don’t get me started…my dad dragged us to not just the symphony but every fucking opera that came through, loooooong before I reached ten and for years thereafter. I even slept through live elephants onstage during Aida (three-plus hours!). I hate classical and opera music in a different way…a deep, dark, black, loathing way that would never have allowed me to come near this thread.I pretty much hate fucking ballet too. And Messiah? Bad dancing AND bad singing. Yay!

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Little Shop’s a good show. So is Lion King – I ran it for a while here in NYC. Funny you and Jane should mention those shows. I acted for a bit and played the voice of Audrey II in LSOH and Judas in JCS in college shows.

Jane – Original Judas on Broadway was Ben Vereen. Carl Anderson played him in the movie but I don’t know if he was a EWF alum. And didn’t Ted Neely play Jesus in the movie? I don’t think he was the B’way Jebus.

  • jane

Scribster, I saw the NYC Lion King do one number on Letterman when they opened, and it was an impressive number…which did not impress me to look up the name of the song, or hear any more, however.Saw Young Frankenstein doing a number (roll in the hay- can’t forget it) on Letterman and said fuuuuuuuuuuck that noise.I would prolly sit through Monty Python though. Hey wait! Life of Brian! I fuckin loooove that. I’d load some of that shit in an IPod. Every Sperm is Sacred. The Inquisition. Moar please.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

FYI – Both Young Frankenstein and Spamalot are closing January 4th.

  • scribblechic

OMG! Jane gave me a nickname. Does this mean I’m one of the cool kids now?

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Scribster it is, cool kid. Be careful, though. The next step is to lure you into the basement. Say hi to Elvis when you get there.

  • ceu

    Hair(ok, not really)

  • jane

Carl- Ted Neeley yes, Yvonne Elliman (who did Sat Nite Fever too, right? or just some of the soundtrack?) also, such as. Carl Anderson was the pre-Broadway Judas apparently, and filled in and became alternate Judas later. Neeley was also Jesus understudy. I forgot about the reunion tour thingy with Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach. (as per Teh Wiki and teh IMDB).You shouldn’t have told me you’re a performer. I thought you were just a techie, you know, one of us.

  • scribblechic

I’ve been night stalking you guys here for a while and I keep waiting on the answer to “Where’s Elvis?” WTF?I’m down for basement action. I’d follow Elvis anywhere. You too BC. :-)

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

Well, actors are kinda weird, which is why I no longer consider myself in that niche… although I’m weird in my own way. Haven’t performed in years except for singing in the car and the shower. I was a music major in college (clarinet – classical mostly, sorry Jane) but got the acting bug toward the end of my college career when I started playing in pits. Been a stagehand for about 15 years now.

  • jane

Yeah, Carl, I think my mom told me that about Carl Anderson, apparently she was wroooong. I’ll be sure to let her know how she ruined my childhood.

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net/obama-truth-watch/ QueenTiye

ceu: YES! Yes! I’m sorry. I thought we were still talking about Arlo Guthrie – who, if he was at the Concert in Central Park, I’m going to have to call my mom and fuss at her again, for not letting me go!OK. Simon and Garfunkel Concert in Central Park. Awesome concert – but I only heard the Simon and Garfunkel parts on album way after the fact. :( QT

  • jane

And Carl, I played flute growing up, which is also usually classical (explains why I haven’t touched it since like, college, where I was a *thththtpppt* business major, and kids, back then that don’t mean I learned shit about business BTW).I got afraid of actory-type people from film and commercial work…I think the sheer amount of time they have to spend hanging around, standing by as it were, with noone to talk to (except other actors), makes them the biggest most fucking annoying idiots on the planet. Also the egos.

Jack, I got to see Teh Femmes in about 93, awesome show, people literally climbing the walls in the venue. And again about two years ago outdoors downtown (free, again) about a mile walk from here.I like my location location location, I can see why they raised our prop tax recently, I just wish there were less fucking gaping holes to the outside.
