Quote of the Day

“Gov. Palin, to some extent, pushed the party more to the right, and I think she had something of a polarizing effect when she talked about how small town values are good. Well, most of us don’t live in small towns. And I was raised in the South Bronx, and there’s nothing wrong with my value system from the South Bronx.”
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell

    Damn Right!

  • http://girldujour.wordpress.com girl du jour

Small town governments are some of the worst run in the world. Illustrating once again that Sarah Palin is an idiot.

  • Mary N.

I don’t know who was responsible for typing the comments of Colon Powell, but I do know that whomever it was, they typed the wrong word when they wrote…effect. It very obviously, should have been affect…meaning “to act on; produce an effect or change in”

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

I can’t even relate to the worst thread, but I smiled so much when Powell spoke on this. This and his endorsement of Obama (…the really rigt answer is, ‘why does it matter?’) really have reclaimed the mantle of greatness for him.QT

I like Colin Powell more and more each day. I hope he keeps his voice out there. It could be extremely valuable the next four years.

  • GItheJOE

Mary N.Are you a high school English teacher? If not than let it go man/woman.This is a peaceful place were I get to bitch about the retarded people running my government. Please correct Bush’s grammar it will make me laugh and perform a useful purpose at the same time.

  • Mary N.

To: GItheJOE at December 11, 2008 11:03 PMNo, sadly, I’m (that is a contraction for ‘I AM’)not a high school teacher. I am a SECOND GRADE TEACHER. That reflects very poorly on someone like you who thinks they have a brain in their head and a valid point in the bloggosphere…It is a sad state of affairs when an American citizen believes they have a valid point to make in the bloggosphere that is read by the entire world, when some idiot American(you), can’t even blog using correct grammar taught in 2nd grade!!!

  • jane

(Dear God don’t let me loose to correct Mary N.)Hope you’re being facetious, missy. We don’ cotton to that kinder talk here none.

  • Kat

Taint right, is it Jane? That just taint right.Cool your jets, Mary N. GI is a good guy and doesn’t deserved to get slammed over misplaced punctuation.

  • Mary N.

Let’s get back to the point, shall we? And that just might be that if you think you have a valid point to make about the current affairs that are happening around you in our world, you just might be intelligent enough to use correct grammar…or, if I’m not pushing the envelope too far, correct English.

  • jane

    Tits or GTFO.

  • http://obamaproject.windonwater.net QueenTiye

Jig’s up. “Colon” is a giveaway. Mary is a troll. Don’t feed it.QT

  • Mary N.

OMG!!! I did accidentally write Colon instead of Colin. Please, forgive me. I must be as dumb as the rest!

  • Kat

    Ohhh….excellent call, QT.

  • jane

“that is really a very sad state to be in.”And a preposition is a very bad thing to end a sentence in.”Colon Powell”Wrong.”…whomever it was, they typed…”Nice try at erudition.”…really rigt answer”Wrong again! (And how “really” rigt can you be? Can’t you only be rigt or rong?)”…should have been affect…”Ding ding ding! Wrong, but thanks for playing.”I am a SECOND GRADE TEACHER. That reflects very poorly on someone like you …”She said it.”bloggosphere…”Not touching it.”And that just might be that if you think you have a valid point to make about the current affairs that are happening around you in our world, you just might be intelligent enough to use correct grammar…or, if I’m not pushing the envelope too far, correct English.”And such as.

  • Jack

    girldujour:Maybe that’s why they’re small towns?

  • http://girldujour.wordpress.com girl du jour

maybe so. :) and don’t get me started on all the typos and grammatical errors here…

  • PackyJ

Mary N,Were you born a tight ass, or have you worked to achieve that plateau?

  • scribblechic

Taint Mary’s panties in a bunch? Sheesh. Anal, much?

  • Teaflax

I’m a pretty virulent grammar nazi and even I think Mary N is being an ass – not least because she’s wrong not only in what she claims but also in how she claims it (what is the weird ellipsis doing before “affect”, for instance?).”Effect” is indeed the proper word in the quote. You cannot have an affect.Hell, I’m not even a native English speaker and I know that.

  • Teaflax

Linkage in “is indeed the proper word in the quote” didn’t work.Try this: http://www.yourdictionary.com/grammar-rules/affect-effect-grammar.html

  • dontpanic23

Ah, how did I miss this last night. A real barbeque over a grammar bully, and a bad one at that. I love a troll rumble.THEJoe, last night I think you felt the love. Way to go, guys.

  • http://www.broadwaycarl.blogspot.com Broadway Carl

    LOL! Mary N got bitchslapped!

  • gypsysoul111

don’t f with the GDAB regulars. they will give you a virtual beat down so bad your ass will actually hurt.

  • nurunr

Mary N: Sorry to get in line (also) and correct you, but your “correction” is wrong. The easy way to distinguish when to use “affect” versus “effect” is to recognize that “affect” is a VERB, and “effect” is a NOUN. In Powell’s quote, he is referencing a THING, not an act — the polarizing result of Palin’s words/actions. So the right word to use is, indeed, E-ffect.

“Most of us don’t live in small towns”?He’s joking, right?

  • ceu

Right, pooper. Turns out most of us live in one-horse towns in Wyoming. Who could have guessed?!
