Weird Anti-Semitism

From a Chicago-based CBS network affiliate. Basically, they posted a “Guess Who’s The Jew” feature which, from someone like Howard Stern I could understand as comedic satire, but this is a straight news organization. Bizarre and creepy.

Very bizarre.Frankly, I fail to see the point of “identifying the Jew.” WTF does it matter?Perhaps someone out there can explain it to me.

the statement with the photos….”Hollywood is chock full of Jewish celebrities, although some fly under the radar more than others. For every proud and outspoken Jewish star like Adam Sandler or Jon Stewart, there’s someone that you might not realize is Jewish, like Rachel Bilson or Harrison Ford. Here’s a slideshow of some of the biggest Jewish stars in movies and music”WTF?!?!that is some real “hold your purse grandma, you can’t tell who they are” kinda shit!

I think you guys are mis-reading this. Apparently, this. The Jewish United Fund (that originally compiled this list) is likely compiling this as a Jewish awareness thing – to remind people of the lots and lots of people that they know and like who are actually Jewish.I flipped through up till #47 of 65 – I knew most of them were Jewish and/or hadn’t ever thought about it but would have figured it out if I had. A couple were surprises. However, if Sean Paul counts as Jewish, that changes a lot of my understanding of things – Sean Paul had a Jewish father, but an Afro-Caribbean mother – and Jewishness, I’ve always understood, is matrilineal. Anyone have any other info here?QT

I disagree with Bob. I think this is FAR from “anti-semitism”. It reminds me of a funny Saturday Night Live skit from the Jon Lovitz era, a game show called “Jew, or not a Jew?” where contestants had to guess whether a famous person was Jewish or not.Surprises: Harrison Ford, Daniel Radcliffe, Scarlett Johanssen, Jack Black.Disappointed to learn that Adam Sandler is a Republican. I guess that’s another reason not to like him much. How could they have missed Sarah Silverman??? Or Leonard Nimoy? Alicia Silverstone? I guess there are quite a few they could have included. About half the stand-up comics from the 60′s.I don’t get a creepy vibe from this at all. I find it fun, and an expression of pride. To answer QT’s question, I think that traditionally Jewishness is matrilineal, but Sean Paul is Jewish for the same reason that Barack Obama is black: he accepts that as part of his identity.

The only thing I take issue with is the ‘flying under the radar’ thing.Anyway, Rachel Bilson is hot as hell no matter her background.
