African Americans and The White House Staff

Lee’s post about the White House chef got me thinking about the White House service staff — specifically African American employees. We know that slaves helped to build the executive mansion during the Washington and Adams administrations, and various presidents, including Jefferson, Madison, Jackson and Polk, brought slaves to the White House.

This AP article briefly documents the difficult evolution from slaves to servants to service staff to West Wing staffers. The following story kinda stood out…

Eleanor Roosevelt, a staunch civil rights advocate, mandated that only African Americans be hired to the service staff. John Pye, a White House valet, purchased the very first war bond from President Roosevelt — in person — for $18.75. Decades later, Pye had a rather unpleasant experience with President Nixon…

…who came to him and asked about some leftover food.Nixon said: “Boy, what are y’all going to do with the rest of the food,” Lowe said. “Mr. Pye did not like being called ‘boy’ and he didn’t like to be questioned about how the kitchen would deal with leftovers.”Pye told him that the food went to charity, but it turned out Nixon wanted to eat the leftovers.”Pye made sure they went to charitable organizations that day,” Lowe said.

I can’t imagine why Nixon was hated so much. The following photograph is very likely the first ever taken of the White House service staff. Circa May, 1877. The Hayes administration.white_house_servants.jpg

There’s a symmetry to how the broader American story also plays out in miniature at the White House. The wounds and scars of the United States exist inside the walls of that mansion, and in ten days, it will encompass and reflect one of America’s greatest triumphs.Adding… There’s a little known 1979 miniseries called Backstairs at the White House starring Leslie Uggums and Louis Gossett, Jr. which follows the lives of the African American service staff through eight administrations. Thank you for this article and for reminding me about “Backstairs at the White House”! I was very ill when that miniseries premiered on TV, and it was my one and only bright spot that helped get methrough that very difficult time.I am surprised you forgot to mention Olivia Cole though, but I still thank you VERY MUCH Bob!

Thanks so much Bob; for the history and for the link to this miniseries. I remember watching that series as a little kid.

Just a side note, Backstairs at the White House was an amazing book long before it was made into a movie. It tells the story of a woman and her daughter who served on the housekeeping staff through many administrations. It’s called “My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House” by Lillian Rogers Parks.

Bob-every single “decision” that GW has made (with the exception of saving some of the ocean’s beautiful places) can directly be related to the fact that he is an untreated alcoholic..which is OK, unless you are the President of the United States, which ,in this, case is definitely NOT OK…just thinking that you saw god and now you see the “light” is completely meaningless in terms of recovering from substance abuse…thank you Condi Rice…she doesn’t have a clue about what GW really needs to look at..i.e. HIMSELF and how he perceives the world and who he actually is…he doesn’t have a clue..it is as if he is still stuck back at Yale at the frat house..I hope he gets some help..of course, for our country and the world it is way too late…Laura is just your classic co-dependent. These people need to get down to the nitty gritty and stop thinking that “history” is going to vindicate them…duh…only YOU can vindicate your actions by your ACTIONS. Self awareness is something our new president has…it is such a relief..he is not being driven by demons that are out of his awareness as GW is…he has SELF-AWARENESS which is miles away from self agrandizement-which is what we have been dealing with for the past 8 years..thanks for listening..Penny

Excellent post. Thank you Bob.I think that President Nixon seemed to forget that the White House service staff work for the citizens of the United States as does the President.
