Drama! At Foggy Bottom

Get ready for a day of DRAMA! President Obama will be meeting with Secretary of State Clinton today. Expect lots of speculation about DRAMA! It’ll be a Dramarama. And get ready for the repeated use of the insidery place-name “Foggy Bottom” in reference to the State Department.

    To build D.C. they basically had to drain an enormous swamp — trading malaria for politics, as one Wit has put it — and the land between Lafayette Square and Georgetown was particularly low-slung and situated on the marshy banks of the Potomac. As such, it was prone to heavy fog.Which, curiously, had nothing to do with the name. “Foggy Bottom” is named for D.C. architect Winifred Penciltooth Foggybottomham, who built the first Federal City entirely out of Legos.

    And the State Department is referred to as “Foggy Bottom” because it is headquartered in the Harry S Truman building which is located there.

    “Foggy Bottom” is also the code name used by the DC Madam for David Vitter.
