Obama and Same-Sex Marriage

About the president-elect’s 1996 letter in support of same-sex marriage, Laffy asked: “What changed?”

Throughout the campaign, Barack Obama repeatedly stated that he’s personally not in favor of same-sex marriage, but that he opposes any constitutional amendments that would ban it. To me, he’s basically saying, I don’t like pie, but I’m not going to take away your right to eat it. Pie. To eat pie.

In the 1996 questionaire, he wrote:

I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.

This is essentially true today — especially the second half. He’s clearly stated his opposition to Prop 8, and I couldn’t find any instances when he opposed a law or amendment legalizing same-sex marriage.

So the only thing that’s changed is how he speaks about it, underscoring his personal belief which is, of course, differenent from how he plans to govern.

    This is exactly right. Some people like pie and some people do not. Just because I don’t like pie doesn’t mean I should deny someone else’s right to eat pie.

    (For the record, I personally like pie in the figurative sense, but in the literal sense, I enjoy a cream pie – like pumpkin, or coconut custard – than I do a fruit pie… not that there’s anything wrong with fruit pies.)

    I’m not so sure he’s for gay marriage. He’s for equal benefits and such, but not the official version of marriage as we know it.

    I don’t like pie, I like men. Well, some of them, anyways.I’m not sure what to make of this just yet. I think we are in for a few surprises over the next year. He’s a master at keeping a cool public face on things while behind the scenes his Genius Machine is running full tilt. On domestic/foreign policy, the economy and national security, I think he’s going to shock the living shit out of everyone, even his supporters, with what he’s capable of handling.First things first, though. We have to keep the fucking Democrats out of his way.
