Why hasn’t Obama visited the victims of the crash of, uh…whatever the plane was, let’s say, Oceanic 815? This is an insult to their memories!

Yeah! US Air flight 1549 apparently hit some geese and lost engine power. The pilot landed in the Hudson and there were no serious injuries with 150 on board. It never gets boring here in New York.

I’m waiting for Giuliani to show up and make believe he’s got everything under control.

Are you old enough to remember when the plane went down in the Potomac? That was in the early 80s in the winter, IIRC. Plane was taking off from National – which is nasty to fly in & out of ’cause it’s so close to the river (sort of like flying into Logan, over the ocean). Most of those people died, though, and the plane hit a bridge, killing people there, too.Sorry….seeing this one today reminded me of that.

That pilot gets my awesome vote for today for his landing flexible.

Yes, the pilot should be commended. That had to be a very difficult landing. It was off 47th St, not exactly a deserted plain, despite the width of the Hudson…..

I was going to make a joke about this but I can’t. Dammit morality go away!Anyway, I was shocked and awed by this today. I was so impressed that the pilot was the last one out. That is military training or something close to it. Bush needs to give this guy a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

For what it’s worth, my husband (a former aerospace engineer) says that if that plane had been a Boeing instead of an Airbus, the bird strike wouldn’t have killed the engines.

Geese in New York at this time of year? Is that normal? Forgive me, being from Wisconsin, we see the last of the geese late November/early December.Also, isn’t the Hudson highly polluted? I guess, though, it’s better to glow in the dark than be dead, right?

Dirty, yes, but that means something different these days than “polluted.” There are flair-ups of pollution – the most recent concern is actually pharmaceuticals in the water, and sometimes raw sewage or medical waste. Two days out of the hospital for me, the guy in a spousal couple of friends suddenly woke up blind in one eye. Tests and tests an still no diagnosis (but not MS). Tonight the other eye is doing it and he is at the ER. Now my friend Roger, who took me to the hospital for surgery and sat in that awful room with bad tv the whole first day (and came back to get me on day 2) had a stress test today and must have a heart catheterization on MOnday (several nights in hospital in da big city 40 miles away). I’ll be doing the same for him by day and staying with my mom at night. Then if he has to have the bypass, it’s back for a longer stint at the hospital–he lives alone in the boonies–we will have to find/rent/whatever a hospital bed to keep here so I can take care of him and still hold down the fort/dogs/ boy child man without driving 40 miles round trip a day to his house.you guys may get a big break from DP for a while.The bitch of it all (besides his heart–maybe) is that I’ll be goddess knows where during the inauguration. Fuck.

Tons of geese in CT year round as well. For the same reason as in New York. Lots of slow moving fresh water that does not get 3 inch thick ice layer on top. Geese will break through half inch or less of ice.Since they are on the protected species list, no one can fuck with them (well, they can, but do you want to get arrested for fucking with a goose?). The joke in CT goes like this:Q. Where does a Canadian Goose nest?A. Anywhere it damn well pleases.Since there are more geese in the winter than summer, I guess that some come down from farther north in the fall and return in the spring. There are many that just stay in CT year round.Bloomberg beat Gulianni to it. At least Michael didn’t try to take credit for the crew’s competence. He actually praised the entire flight crew’s professionalism which I thought was very appropriate. After Rudi, Michael is a class act.Most Pratt & Whitney engines can eat at least 3 geese without failure. I believe that’s true for GE as well. (I know engineers at P&W) I don’t know about Rolls Royce, but I doubt that they are any different.Those are the only three companies making airliner engines. Most US airlines use P&W or GE or both.Very few airframes (if any, I can’t think of a single case anymore) give you only one choice of engine manufacturer. The latest huge Airbus (390?) that is behind schedule will only have the P&W and GE collaboration engine initially, but there will be a Rolls Royce engine at some point.For an A320 you can get engines from all three of those companies.Note that you are not allowed to sell any sort of jet engine for use on commercial aircraft without showing that the engine will work while a goose is shot through the works. They actually use whole frozen chickens (thawed out before use) that are shot into running engines with a air canon. I got to see this happen once, it’s a blast.P&W tests to failure. I was told that the minimum number of geese per engine to kill the engine is 3 geese for their most vulnerable engine and more typically it’s 5 geese. Five all at once is worse than 5 one after another.If it was geese indigestion that caused loss-of-thrust on today’s incident, then I suspect that each engine must have sucked 5 or more geese in all at once. Considering the vacuum cleaner effect of those engines during takeoff, I think that this is likely to be what happened. The flock of geese was large enough to be visible on radar so it wasn’t just a couple or three geese.
