Scarborough Loves Waterboarding

In this video, Joe Scarborough wheels out every dickish debating tactic and every fallacy about waterboarding in the far-right arsenal. I mean, it’s a truly stunning performance combining insane levels of ignorance with the worst brand of debating hackery I’ve ever witnessed on the cable outside of FOX News.

There are so many problems with Scarborough here in terms of both style and substance — I’m at a loss as to what to dissect first. And, to be honest, the facts and arguments have been repeated over and over for several dark years now.

But cowards like Scarborough don’t seem to care about what experts have to say. Above all else, Joe takes the position that irrespective of whether waterboarding is torture, it works (it doesn’t!) and therefore it has to be done or else we’ll all die.

In the video, Krystia Freeland is absolutely correct that it doesn’t work. But the efficacy of waterboarding is irrelevant in comparison to the broader problem that torture, in all of its forms, is illegal and immoral. I’m sure the Japanese, though, were thinking about their own safety and security when they waterboarded American prisoners:

Here’s the testimony of two Americans imprisoned by the Japanese:

They would lash me to a stretcher then prop me up against a table with my head down. They would then pour about two gallons of water from a pitcher into my nose and mouth until I lost consciousness.

And from the second prisoner:

They laid me out on a stretcher and strapped me on. The stretcher was then stood on end with my head almost touching the floor and my feet in the air. . . . They then began pouring water over my face and at times it was almost impossible for me to breathe without sucking in water.

As a result of such accounts, a number of Japanese prison-camp officers and guards were convicted of torture that clearly violated the laws of war.

You know what might also keep you safe, Joe? You coward? Nuclear missiles. So why don’t we just nuke Iran, southern Lebanon, Gaza and Waziristan and get it over with? If the ultimatum is do illegal thing X or else we’ll die, then why not?

The far-right’s willingness to randomly discard morality, domestic and international law simply to further the illusion of safety in a free society is perhaps the most dangerous and cowardly aspect of the far-right. Not just in terms of American policy, but also in terms of the precedent it sets for other nations who equally crave safety and security. What do they do when they feel like, for example, American soldiers and citizens are threatening their safety and security?

Are they randomly discarding morality, domestic and international law, or is it systematic?

Well if Scarborough doesn’t think that stress positions, sleep depravation and waterboarding is torture, then I suggest a reopening of the Lori Klausutis case, the staffer that was found dead in his office while Scarborough was a Congressman, and let’s subject him to those tactics to see if the “real truth” about his “relationship” with her comes out. I’ll bring the water jugs.

    I concur, Carl. I don’t give a shit if he’s innocent, either – I’m a Real American™!

and meanwhile, Tony Blankly is on Shuster talking about the possibility of closing down Gitmo, again repeating that the men held there are horrible immoral terrorists & the worst of the worst & that Gitmo’s actually may be the best solution for dealing with them.It makes me feel dirty to be an American…

“What do they do when they feel like, for example, American soldiers and citizens are threatening their safety and security?”They fund a well known terrorist group to attack us. That’s what they do, Bob. Sorry, but that was just to easy.

Lee,It’s systematic. Or perhaps even systemic. But it’s not random.

ceu,There are several problems with Gitmo, not the least of which is the fact that many of the detainees have never seen due process. So what do you do with them? It’s not Obama’s fault, but he can’t just dump these guys into the American prison population without due process.Furthermore, I haven’t really seen any other nation who is willing to house them. We can’t put them into American prisons, they’ll all end up dead. You know that.So how do we close Gitmo and manage all of the other problems that creates?

    >>Are they randomly discarding morality, domestic and international law, or is it systematic?Well, both.I used “randomly” as an ironic reference to the Urban Dictionary internet hipster definition of “random” to mean “it doesn’t make sense.”http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Random&defid=1895618

Poop – I believe that Portugal has agreed to take some. But we’re dealing with people who have been held without charges, in less than ideal conditions, for years and are certainly not the worst of the worst. Obama’s driver, for god’s sake. 15 year old kids (well, not 15 anymore). They have to be let go. They have to be. There’s no other moral way. I don’t know where they should go but someone better fucking step up & deal with it. AND with the reported 26,000 people being held on friggin’ SHIPS!! It is appalling & unconscionable and it must stop now!

Torture is very, very good for getting a confession. It is very, very bad at gleaning useful intelligence.Put another way: torture serves political ends, but not strategic ends. One of the most telling things to come out in the NYT’s story last week was the fact that the CIA’s torture “experts” didn’t have any training or experience in interrogation — they only knew about the application of pain and the limits of endurance.

Jane Meyer’s “The Dark Side.”If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favor and find out how big of a boner this administration grew for torture. It’s an incredible read about an eight year battle between conservatives who love the Constitution versus neo-cons who think Jesus hates brown people from other countries. (And, okay, the brown people here, too.)

  • ceu

OMG! Yes, Carl, yes…I meant bin Laden’s driver. I’m embarrassed. The only excuse I have is that I was getting a bit(!) emotional when I wrote that and … I have no excuse. I got stupid. :( But I meant well!

Gene Robinson schooled Pat Buchanan on this very subject this morning when Pat tried to corner him using the “would you say the same about Lincoln” question. Robinson illustrated the difference between the Civil War and the current “War on Terror”. Great comeback, well-thought. He then concluded with the statement that “I don’t know”, since, you know, we didn’t live during the Lincoln Administration?!?I was then blown away when Blowjob Joe tried to say that past Presidents (John Adams, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, etc.) set some sort of “precedent” by subverting the Constitution during times of war. With that argument, I guess we can enslave some people again since we’ve set precendent for it with about 16 Presidents.

PPP – On what to do with those held at Gitmo, just have a stateside separate facility for these detainees. Give them independent medical evaluations and have them interviewed by non military pscycologists to gain their story without the intimidation.Set up criteria to screen them toward release or civil trial. These captives aren’t war criminals. They are suspected individual criminals. Let the system work for or against them. The true Jihadists may want their reward and confess their crimes against the infidels. Those caught in the over zelous netting operations could be released. Those who claim torture need to have their treatment examined and prosecute their torturers. The latter is the reason for Gitmo. Torture without accountablility.
