Schweikart, Lincoln and Obama

A reader sent me an e-mail exchange he had with Larry Schweikart, the University of Dayton history prof who appeared on Hannity the other night and declared, among other things, that President-elect Obama doesn’t have any wars to deal with. First, the reader e-mail to Schweikart:

You said, when talking about Obama “stealing” Lincoln’s shtick,

“Lincoln, though, had a war to deal with. Obama doesn’t.”

Please explain what you mean by saying Obama doesn’t have a war to deal with. Are you agreeing that the Iraq fiasco is an occupation and not a legitimate “war”? Or are you suggesting that the situation in Iraq is no longer a concern for the United States?

And Schweikart’s reply:

I didn’t get to finish my comments.

a) Iraq is not a fiasco, it’s what we call a VICTORY, and the looney libs know it. That’s why they are trying to get out before it’s clearly obvious to everyone (as it is already obvious to the Iraqis).

b) I was referencing spending. 99% of Lincoln’s spending went for war. 99% of Obama’s spending will go for pork, bailouts, social programs, and utter nonsense unrelated to national security. But I didn’t get to finish that point.

c) Actually, no, Iraq is no longer a “concern” for us because we won. It’s sort of like Sicily in 1944.

Now, since I can pretty well tell where you are coming from, you are hereby blocked. Good evening.

A few things here. First, Schweikart’s quite the jagoff, no?

As for his points (a) and (c), there’s no way to define “victory” in Iraq. How do we know this? General Petraeus said so.

On point (b), Lincoln also instituted the income tax to help pay for the war. A bit of fiscal responsibility that’s entirely foreign to Schweikart, Hannity, President Bush and many other so-called conservatives. Then there’s the very liberal strong central government, anti-states-rights position of Lincoln, and on and on.

Oh, and closing his e-mail with the internet equivalent of “shut his mic off!” was particularly O’Reilly-ish of him.

I’m impressed that Hannity has managed to actually LOWER his standards vis a vis guests now that Colmes is gone. Well played, Mr. Hannity. Well played.

What a douche, blocking people he doesn’t want to read…Anyhoozle, we fucking won?!?! So where’s the awesome Chickenhawk Victory Parade Festivities they were planning? Weren’t they putting money towards The Celebration? Man, that’s too bad. I’m sure it would have been as cool as the new closing sequence to Return of the Jedi. Fireworks, X-Wings, Jar-Jars climbing all over shit…

I am forever gobsmacked by this parallel reality so aggressively marketed by the right. Even more disturbing is the fact that a history professor is teaching this bizarro revisionism to students. I hope the election of President Obama is a sign that this kind of crap spewed by this kind of people is going out of fashion.Really, look outside people and make your own decisions…………

His item a. makes no sense at all. Bypassing the fact that we did not accomplish what we intended when we started because of the detail that there were no WMD, we were never given a clear, sustaining goal so how could we have been victorious? But more than that, he says the libs want to get out before it’s clear that we were victorious. Does that make sense to anyone? If so, explain it to me. If you are victorious, why wouldn’t you leave? Why would stay and continue being killed by IEDs once you had won? And how will leaving Iraq prevent our illustrious victory from being discovered? If we leave Iraq, we’ll no longer have any idea what’s happening there? The flow of information will completely stop? If that is the case, how can that be called victory? I would have thought any version of victory would include Iraq as a permanent ally.

Huh. Iraq is “not a war” and is “not a concern.”I think this guy should receive a visit from some Iraq vets, so thay can clarify things for him.

  • LameDuckHunting

I forgot to mention what galls me the most:After spouting this mind-boggling nonsense, they have THE GINORMOUS STONES to call the Libs “loony” for not buying it……

University of Dayton? What, he couldn’t get a job at the University of Phoenix?

Dayton is the Athens of south-central Ohio.

  • LameDuckHunting

    >>What, he couldn’t get a job at the University of Phoenix? No…their standards are too high and, more importantly, they didn’t want to jeopardize their endowments…….

  • LameDuckHunting

Mr. the Dingeldein, that would be an email I would enjoy reading…….

  • PackyJ

    Heh. LDH said “endowment.”

  • Lyle

To be fair, the University of Dayton has the world’s largest “collection of materials about Mary, the mother of Jesus.” You can’t beat that academic cred when booking guests on the Catholic Broadcast Hour hosted by Sean Hannity.

Schweikart’s an asshat, but he’s a legit historian at a legit school. Mock the fact that he’s an asshat and leave his profession and affiliation out of it. I’m very sure that neither can help it, as the man obtained tenure long ago. That being said, other than his attacks on liberals and how they’re destroying the USofA, Schweikart hasn’t published much of anything in the last ten years. Before that, his expertise was initially in the history of banking (specifically banking in the American west, and Arizona in particular), while later in his career he developed a fetish for weapons systems. Other than his hatred of the liberals, he seems to have little in the way of a specialization in either the presidency or Abraham Lincoln. A quick scan of his CV finds that he did pen one article on Abe back in the 1980s . . . on banking practices during the war.

There’s some amusing reading to be had at “ratemyprofessors.com” re Schweikart. Typical entry:”An open mind is very helpful in this class. As long as you are open to S’s strange right wing view of the world and know nothing of other ways of interpreting history, you may do well. Best to come without facts that contradict him…”Yep!

Yes Bob, he is a jagoff. That’s why I like you, Bob. I give you crap, and you don’t ban me (I imagine there’s a limit). Dissenting opinions are part of the foundation of our nation.

I find it interesting that *they* flock to ‘Hannity’ like moths to a light. This is one of my zen chants to achieve relaxation:Hannity Sean, Hannity Sean, Sean Hannity, Hannity Hannity.Oh the inanity, of Sean Hannity.Hannity’s discourse reminds me of insanity. And that the gene pool needs some bleach.

  • http://unrelatedcontent.com Travis D

I like Hannity’s minor lateral lisp.

  • Leigh

Wow, this guy’s a real dick. I guess he never read that book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”I thought professors in particular were supposed to be able to see and contemplate issues from many different perspectives. I mean, this twit is totally clueless in that area.Or am I wrong?

  • Leigh

Travis, I’ve never noticed Hannity’s “lateral lisp” before, and I can’t stand to listen to him for more than 60 seconds.Shit, now I’m gonna HAVE to watch the idiot just to hear his lisp. Dammit. Also, why is this site so, so slow?

We won the Iraq war!!! Really, can I come back to America then? I’ve been deployed here since Dec 07 and I havent seen any indication of this “victory” this guy is claiming. The whinny punk cant even deal with a dissenting question without blocking the sender, what a coward. An he’s the author of one of those conservatard revisionist history books I so dispise, where they ignore real history in order to make up a bunch of bull to convince people that they are always right. It began with the books claiming the South was right in the Civil War, pathetic.
