Spiritual Bankruptcy

by Lee Stranahan

The economy is, of course, all about numbers. Facts and figures. Balance sheets. But just look at the headlines about the economy. Collapses of institutions, mass layoffs (sometimes by profitable companies), misuse of public funds, even simple theft on an unprecedented scale. There are many causes, many culprits but one thing is very clear to me.

America has a big spiritual problem.

The crisis is really about greed, thoughtlessness, selfishness, and disconnection. Treating corporations like people. Treating people like machines.

Perhaps the most important thing about Barack Obama is that he recognized this. He talks about values in a way that was hijacked by the Republicans for decades. The GOP’s problem wasn’t that they talked about values and spirituality – it’s that they had a contradictory and disastrous system of values.

To really solve our country’s problems, we need to thoughtfully reexamine and question the underlying values that brought us to this place. All the big problems – economy, environment, torture, foreign policy, human rights – come down to values.

We’re headed for a time of tumult because this is about something bigger than policy or political party. The soul of America needs to change and that’s never easy. Self-examination is painful. That’s really the challenge ahead, for everyone.

Agree with everything except that it’s a spiritual problem. Seems to me that it’s more of a moral/ethical problem. For example, an atheist may not have much spirituality, that doesn’t mean s/he does not have high moral or ethical values.

It’s also about people owning what they do. It is a cause and effect problem. There seems to be a lack of understanding of the basic law of physics. For every action there is a reaction. If I push you then you will fall and possibly be hurt.We have lost that ability as a nation to see that. People need to be held accountable for what they do.

The American Ship of State has become wildly off course. For decades our North Star has been driven by greed, lies & an addiction to WAR!We need a new North Star based on love, truth & PEACE!We need to see clearly the core differences between conservatives & progressives & the unique North Stars they each represent.Conservatives & their movement have been the North Star that has guided America for the last 40 years. Conservatives want to conserve “their” power! Progressives want to progress “our” power! With the election of Obama we are at the dawning of a new Progressive era, giving America a new North Star. The American Ship of State has run aground. Our new Progressive North Star can lead us to deeper safer spiritual waters. The Progressive Movement alone understands the true meaning & importance of the first three words of the Declaration of Independence “We The People”!

“We are a generation raised to believe that we will be rich or a rock star. We are slowing waking up to the fact that this was a lie. We work jobs we hate to buy shit we don’t need. We have no Great Depression. We have no Great War. Our Great War is a spiritual war. Our Great Depression is our lives.” Fight Club 1996.Now this was written before Iraq and the Recession. So we have both now and in 15 years will we have the wonderful dream country of the 1950s that everyone loved so much(except blacks, women, workers, gays, non believers, etc). So hang in there it will all get better.

Lee,Though the last 8 years might try to belie the facts, the The Soul of America™ isn’t in quite as bad of shape as you believe. As an example, here’s an act of humanity that a group of “bored, anonymous, pathetic Alaskan bloggers who lie” performed. Take a look here:http://www.ieatgravel.com/?p=2770

Packy,Awesome.I think the soul of America elected a mixed race due named Barack Huessin Obama president…But there’s still a big shift coming, I think. I struggle with it, I see the country struggling with it.

Lee,What shift?Tectonic Plates, Weather Patterns or an ideological shift from prosperity theology to a more humanist belief system?

Obama called it an “empathy deficit”, and he referred to it quite often while campaigning down here in SC during the primaries.

Some mullet-sporting, loser Wisconsin man was just arrested for making death threats against Obama while on the internet in a chat room.(I seriously hope that nobody around here has a mullet or looks like that dude in ANY way).

I’ve put like 20 roosters on this altar to Ba’al, nothing yet.

Travis – if ya didn’t burn them first, THERE’S your problem!

Funny you should mention it. I just did a post on this topic over at Street Prophets — a spinoff of DailyKos: http://www.streetprophets.com/storyonly/2009/1/14/95738/5929

It’s a spiritual problem if the problem is spiritual materialism. Could be.But it’s really a simple fact that the consumer society was unsustainable. It never had a future. Take the family farm for example: it’s how people used to get their food all the time until big ag came in via SOAg Earl Butz in 1971. Over the years our food became a source of commodity and industry, not a source of nutrition. Our health declined and we bought more and more stuff that we didn’t need.Nobody is really that healthy. We knows hundreds of people with chronic health problems. We know only 2 families that are healthy and ours are the healthiest because we don’t waste our time, energy and income on consumer culture.Want to solve our country’s underlying problems? Then make sure their needs are met. Wants are not needs, and now we see a lot of wants-oriented business on the decline, and the needs-based business are corrupted. Just check out the stark differences between the organic consumers association and the organic trade association. How is this country going to respond to Obama’s call to sacrifice if it can’t even get out of bed and stop eating fake, non-nutrient dense foods???
